Jeremy Lash True. And they DID come up with legitimate reasons for the disappearance of some. Mainly Ammon from Ordos. Apparently he was skimming off the top with the executrix, and he got replaced Enrico, the mentat of Ordos (no doubt he was bought :p).
Well, there ARE some differences, so it's not entirely word-2-word recreation. - House Ordos cannot build Ornithopters anymore - Prices are MUCH MUCH moar expensive (a Harvester costs 1500, in Dune 2, it was only 300) - Deviators cannot effect infantry - Deviators can permanently deviate vehicles (if you have 2 or moar enemies) - Worms ignore infantry and are a lot slower. They also cannot be targeted, which is bad. - Carryalls are slower - Missile Tanks and Rocket Turrets now automatically engage aircrafts - Features stealth units - Sardaukar are actually able and powerful warriorz here - The Emperor can no longer use Death Hand missile - Saboteurs are a LOT more dangerous

It was almost the same for me, except that I got the first glimpse of the Dune saga with the first Dune game, released by Cryo in 1993, on the computer of a teacher who was tutoring me in History. The first Dune game I got was Dune 2 for Amiga, but I felt it "too distant" from the player. While you impersonated Paul Atreides in the first game, and you interacted with other characters, in the second game you only moved faceless units, and vehichles driven by nobodies. A month later I got the first one, and I play the HELL out of it. Soon after I rented the movie, and only a couple of years later I read the book for the first time.
Me too. This game introduce me to the movie, which introduces me to the books, which reminded me to play both Dune 2000 again. Only then did I realized that Westwood done a very great job expanding on the source material. A shame I cannot get it to run properly on Window 10....

Hold on, last emperor? What happen??
It's a feudal society, not a government as we think of one today. Feudal societies happen when travel is difficult (as it is in Dune, or was in the Middle Ages), which causes power to tend to decentralize. Most of the armed forces in a feudal system are controlled, not by the central government, but by individual families or clans ("houses") who rule land (or planets) in the monarch's name. These families are in constant competition for status among themselves and for the favor of the monarch (who has the power to grant lands, titles, offices, and so forth), and since every family has its own lands and its own military, a leader who becomes popular enough and has a strong enough army is a direct threat to the monarch. This is what happens in the video game: the Emperor is afraid of the other powerful noble houses so he pits them against each other in a fight to see who can control the lucrative planet Dune, figuring that whatever happens, his competitors will be weakened by the battle. Of course, if you do well in the game, this plan ultimately backfires on him.
It's the emperor who incited them to fight. "Divide et impera", divide and conquer. The emperor's reasoning was that those three houses are a threat to his power, so he promised each of them the control of Dune, the only planet in the universe where spice is found (he who controls Dune controls the spice, he who controls the spice controls the universe), provided that they fight each other to obtain it. As the war goes on, each house would weaken, two would fall, and in the end, it would be a snap for the emperor to wipe out the "winner". S P O I L E R Fighting against the emperor, who reaches Dune to take control of it, is actually the final mission of the game. The canonical ending is that House Ordos wins, the emperor is murdered by his concubine, and the subsequent power void opens up a new war, shown in the sequel (Emperor: Battle for Dune).
I just wish in 2000 they had a little bit more unit diversity between the houses. They should have gave the harkonnens those Troopers you see in the intro but didn't even do that, it's like the soldiers don't exist in the game outside a few story video shots of course.

I love how they always show off the Ornithopers when they are one of the most useless units Atreides has.
They're better in Emperor, but if you're not using infantry as Atreides there, you're probably playing wrong.
