great Job pal...i've had a few that were making that noise and I told the cust. it just wasn't worth repairing....I never knew that would be the possible trouble.... Thanks for the tip...great work Dave..!!
Your welcome. Until I learned what caused this I thought the gears were out of alignment, and I may have made the same mistake, only to later discover how simple a fix this is.
Hi, same problem but motor is moving in eject direction not in loading direction and goes standby after few seconds. Any help or suggestion is appreciated
Great video! This is exactly my symptom, an initial grind sound when I plug it in. But when I used my camera I see the glow of the light under the prism. Is the LED either working or not working? If it is working any other theories how to get that grinding noise to stop
Hi, if you haven't already, maybe just try cleaning the prism and the sensors with isopropyl alcohol. The light could just be blocked by years of dirt.
What about the Two IR photo detectors on the side of the loading carriage. Can you measure a voltage drop across them when the IR LED light shines on them?
Hi.. I've got a VCR with this exact same mechanism with a similar but different problem. The tape will not fully load, it gets about half way them makes the same gear grinding noise.. then ejects the tape. Have opened it up to see what's going on, can't see where the problem is. Doesn't get as far as the tape flap being opened, travels a small distance then jams at a slight angle before it should begin decent down. Any ideas?? Thanks :-)
I'm not sure what qualifies as standard, but here are the specifications on the IR transmitter and receiver LEDs I purchased on eBay a few months ago, and they seem to work fine, although it took me a while to determine their polarity. The plus and minus was reversed based on what the longer and shorter wire on the LEDs were suppose to be, and it took me a while to figure that out. Unfortunately I don't have a part number, but here are the specifications. The receiver LED size was 5mm. Wavelength was 940 MM. Forward voltage was 1.1 to 1.4 volts. Forward current was 30MA. Pulse current 75 MA The transmitter size was 5mm Wavelength was 940 nm. Forward voltage was 1.27 to 1.4 volts. Forward current was 30 MA, and the reverse current was10 ua.
Thank you sir I will check them out. From China? I see a guy on here he soldered the connectors of the led and it worked without replacing it. I thought I might take one from an old remote lying around the house.
Gear alignment can be a real headache. It's not something I could tell you in a few lines of text. I would need to have the unit in front of me, and even then I might not be able to do it.
Excellent video, I searched for a few minutes to find the cause of this issue and you answered my questions immediately. Thank you!
big thumbs up BROTHER, old school information always appreciated.
Thanks for the info! I have a Kodak digital camera and two cell phones with cameras and they all pick up IR LED's which is very handy. Thanks again!

The tv remotes are typically 940 as well. Thanks for the info.

Very helpful content. Thank you.
My vcr grinds and pops when loading a tape. Sometimes it takes the tape, sometime it does not.
Was that a sharp brand ? it looks like the same vcr mechanisms that I have in a few sylvania, magnavox, funai & phillips vcr's !
Yes it's a Sharp. Model # DV-RW550U

The infrared shines however it still makes the clicking when the tape is in then it shuts off

Should mention the LED is working fine.
Sounds like a possible mechanical alignment problem, or a broken cam on the tape loading mechanism.
good information thank you for video
Can you put any standard infrared led in

How do I re-align the gears?

good to know. If I ever travel back in time that is
Surprisingly I still have a few customers bringing them in to be repaired.
thank you!
