Development of the South African G6 Rhino self-propelled gun-howitzer began in late 1970s. First prototype was built in 1981. The G6 Rhino saw action in Angola, even before it was mass produced. It entered service with the SANDF in 1988. A number of these self-propelled howitzers were exported to United Arab Emirates and Oman.
The G6 Rhino is fitted with a 155 mm gun-howitzer, developed from the G5 towed gun-howitzer and additionally fitted with semi-automatic loading system and fume extractor. The G6 Rhino fires HE-FRAG, smoke, illumination and incendiary rounds. It is compatible with all NATO 155 mm ammunition. A total of 47 rounds are carried. Maximum range of fire is 30 km with standard HE-FRAG projectile and 39 km with rocket-assisted. It also fires newly developed velocity enhanced long range projectiles with a maximum range of 50 km. The G6 Rhino can fire the first round within 60 seconds. Out of action time is 30 seconds, which allows to avoid counter-battery fire and gives shoot-and-scoot capability.
Secondary armament consists of 12.7 mm heavy machine gun, mounted on top of the roof. There are also a number of smoke grenade dischargers. The G6 Rhino has a welded hull and turret. Its front arc provides protection against 20 mm rounds. All-round protection is against small arms fire and artillery shell splinters. This vehicle is well protected against landmines. This artillery system is fitted with an automatic fire suppression system. An NBC protection system can also be fitted, if required. Some firing ports are provided for the crew. Vehicle has a crew of five, including commander, gunner, two loaders and driver. Unlike many other self-propelled artillery systems the G6 Rhino is based on wheeled 6x6 chassis. It is powered by a diesel engine, developing 525 hp.
G6-52, South Africa's latest and most advanced artillery system. It is fitted with automated ammunition handling system. The G6-52 has a rate of fire of 8 rounds per minute and is capable of multiple round simultaneous impact firing. Maximum range of fire is 67 km with velocity enhanced long range projectiles. In terms of firing range the G6-52 outperforms any other artillery system.
Hope you enjoy!!

Did you know that the six-wheeled armoured chassis was intended to be the basis of a range of vehicles. An air defence missile system being the most likely for SA and Iraq. The "death" of Dr Bull brought that project and others to an end.

One of the coolest looking artillery vehicles out there. I cannot see how you would want anything more, it's fast, hard hitting, highly mobile, armored and capable. Seems they got this right the first time making most other countries Arty look silly and inferior.
Now THIS is mobile artillery. Upgrade it's fire control systems and it'll stay one of the best for some time to come.
The gun was based on the GC45 which became the G5 towed artillery piece in SA.
These artillery pieces caused some concern for Allied forces in the Gulf War because Iraq had bought a number of them.

As we South Africans say, necessity is the mother of all invention, when the commies were pushing down to our borders back in the day no one would come to our aid so we did what we did best, invent some cool shit to give those commies a back handed slap.

As a South African Gunner and Bush war vet, I can concur with you that this Art piece was ground breaking in the bush war at the time. The denseness of the Angolan bush and the way that the mechanized battalions moved at speed to get into position to outflank the enemy afforded us the opportunity to fight with way less troops. At the peak of the Bush war we were around 3000 troops against 30 000 from Cuba, USSR, Fapla and Swapo. Artillery Gunners will never say no.

What an amazing beast! Back in the day SA arms manufacturers were definitely ahead of the pack with certain systems.
That's what happens when the world sanctions the sale of weapons to a highly innovative bunch of people. You can't buy them, so instead they build them for themselves.
Yep! SA developed the anti-mine V Hull I believe. I also loved the Vektor CP1, used to have a mini key ring of it that I got from Lyttelton Engineering where it was manufactured, along with the G6. They were so cool in the 90s!
They still make some cool stuff
We made the forst weapon guided systems built for each vehicle or craft like the Rooivalk.

Another South African stopping by to thank you for shedding some light on our overlooked country. Thank you! Our weapons and vehicles have character amongst other things.
The G6 was designed, developed and built by South Africa during a period when South Africa was under sanctions from the rest of the world.
Exactly, our Gov was wrong, and the sanctions were warranted, but boy did it backfire with regards to the weapon systems. You can't sell weapons to these guys, so instead they just go and build their own, with things like the G6 ending up being one of, if not the best mobile artillery in it's class.
Just goes to show what we were capable of as a bunch of European descendants under pressure.
The design of the weapon was by a Canadian who broke all sanctions/embargoes and he had to go in hiding. But the SA contribution was significant. I believe the special steel required for the barrel was developed by Dr Innes Blom at USCO in Vereniging.

G6 fired 76 km and G5 towed 53km.
Both new world record distances.
I was part of the SADF in 1991 in the armoured division 2SSB. We had rooikat and eland and these beasts came to visit us out in the bush a few times. They are FAR faster than published. Our guys had a "race" from Zeerust to pantzer school in bloemfontein. We had the rooikat and they were doing ~120km/h on the quiet tar roads (governor tweaked). The G6 arrived there one hour sooner than the rooikats. mindblown! The is also a very clever fueling system on the rooikat and g6 where you can transfer exact amounts of fuel between them. Fill one and then supply the others in the field. That front chisel can cut down a tree which two guys arms circumscribe. Really amazing vehicle and both of them have gorgeous engine notes!
Ah, you're talking my language Craig! SADF could win a war of engine sounds. Those massive air cooled turbo charged v engines sounded magnificent! Was the huge logistics truck with the mine protected cab called a kwevoel? I remember hitching a border ride on one, sitting in the back on crates of hand grenades and ammo, doing 130km/h on an unpaved road in the Caprivi, we felt invincible haha. I don't think there was an untweaked governor to be found anywhere on the border😅
It also had a road speed of over 100kmh and had the nickname "Kalahari Ferrari"
Alright so, you've done the Olifant, you've done the Rhino and you've done the Rooikat. NOW WHERE IS THE RATEL!!! I need a Matsimus Ratel video!

Most of the kit that Matsimus has shown from South Africa is close to 40 years old. Back then it was cutting edge.... even the super powers feared and respected our small nation. Thankfully we were sanctioned, and had to produce our own weapons. Otherwise we just would have kept buying over seas crap. Imagine what we would have been able to do if the US and it's allies didn't try and destroy our weapons industry after the end of Apartheid. We were the last of the true Spartans.

Our guys got so many sanctions against us back in those days, especially with regards to procuring weapons... so instead of capitulate, they just said, "screw it, well build our own stuff". And we have some amazing weapons and weapon platforms to show for it.
@@BloodSteyn it would best be described as very creative and very oriented to South Africa's tactical needs. The one that always kind of made me smile was the truck that looked like a regular utility truck but it was actually a rocket launcher. That was pretty amazing.
Wheeled artillery seems to be better than most of tracked artillery, especially in maintenence and reliability on the battlefield
True, it's a lot quicker replacing wheels than tracks. It can also move faster which means that you can run 'n gun with one big ass gun.
permanent 6wd means it probably could lose a few wheels and still limp home. SA generally builds on survivability of the vehicle more than than most other aspects, not that it's not well armored for protection. can be towed instead of having to rig onto a flat bed...which needs a road...
And mobility.

That Rhino has its roots in the 80's....and it appears now wheeled artillery such as the Caesar are the new hot thing. Also, glad to see you have a new sponsor.
I have.
But it wasn't a UA-cam video. 😁
My brother served on the G6 in Angola during the Bush War.
They killed many terrorists.
My car was nearly demolished by the towed version of this gun. I was on an on-ramp in order to merge into freeway traffic, which at that moment was occupied mainly by an SADF convoy. It was night and very dark due to the presence of a bridge at that point. I allowed the tow-vehicle to overtake me, not knowing that behind it was a ruddy big gun - which was invisible from my viewpoint due to its paint scheme and total lack of lights or reflectors. The huge weapon’s wheels missed me by millimeters!
I know of one case in Potchefstroom they destroyed a car with a G5, you cna be glad it was a miss on your car! Thats a few tons of canon
Didn't see it? you are not the only one, a couple of years ago a female SANDF officer made a suggestion (in public) that all SANDF vehicles should be painted bright red because they lost too many vehicles due to camouflage.
😂😂😂😂😂
The towed version is called the G5
I recall that to this day. Fugging imbecilic but indicative of why the country is the shithole it is today
I was in the SA artillery and had the pleasure of being a passenger on the back of the G6. We did +- 50km/h in the bush and the suspension is outstanding. It felt like being in a limo except we were doing bundu bashing with this amazing vehicle
I fought in Angola in 1988 at age 18, when the G5's and G6's were operational. I was not a G6 Operator, but. I was a (Cactus), ground to air French designed anti aircraft operator, that carried 4 missiles per vehicle. A unit consisted of one (radar vehicle, which connected to 3 Missile units)
But hands down, if it weren't for the G5 and especially the G6, it would have been a different war! They were total deal breakers, we fought against the Angolese, which was backed by thousand of Fidel Castro's men along will all Russian ground and air vehicles they had which was supplied by Russia. We had to Manufacture our own war equipment because of American sanction back then. But we would never have won that war, if it it was not for the brilliance of Denel defense contractors in SA, that came up with the G6, it would have been a different outcome. Biggest advantage we had to keep winning in so many battles was the one thing you mentioned time and again in your video.....the reach of the G5 and especially G6!!! Being able to bombard your enemy with a fast moving robust vehicle that could hit 70 km out, was a total game changer.....that G6, made all the difference, because Fidel Castro's guys didn't have an answer for it!!!! :)))))
SADF during the Cold War is so aesthetic
*SANDF - Believe me there is one huge diffrence between the SANDF and SADF. This vehicle was designed by the SANDF, all the SADF can do is friendly fire and roll over their vehicles on tar roads.

Because their next release will be WG in March (confirmed). We can speculate that after that we will have a book for the Pact and NATO nations. After that will probably be a re-do of Oil War. They've also discussed possibly adding Sweden and Soviet Baltic forces (see here marine infantry!). However, they've never mentioned SA, so given that they release 2/3 TY books every year, I don't expect a SA force for at least the next 18 months, possibly 2 years 🤷♂️

I was a gunner in the South African Artillery, 4 Artillery & 14 Artillery Regiments. This G6 - 155mm howitzer was the flagship of the South African Defense force in the Angolan war in during the 1980's. It was as the reporter said way ahead of it's time technologically especially for a small country such as South Africa and that also under world sanctioning for it's segregation at the time.
When the wildebeest are rustling your diamonds
You can tell South Africa leant from Blitzkrieg and just coupled it with the Kommando tactics mentally, almost everything is designed for high mobility and range
Well out here in the bush it should be fast, you can EASILY get flanked in the thick brush and grass we have, my dad(Intelligence Corporal back in the SADF) told me that they did not use their eyes as much as they did their smell and hearing
You could smell the cigarettes of the enemy forces(no smoking on the SADF if you were out in the field)
You could smell campfires (another thing the SADF did not do in the field)
You could hear the enemy talking at night, birds flocking and all that when out in the field, they also use to do artillery attacks at night because the Cubans for some reason were too scared or just didn't fly their helicopters at night at all, my dad has told me allot of his stories, they are some good, some brutal
He once opened the back of a ratel(infantry transport truck) that a RPG had hit, the guys in the back were soup, and another guy told me as he was trying to get over the top of a ratel to get back in he got shot in the ass by a 7.62, he still has the bullet in there, for some reason they can't take it out😅

Thanks mr. M. Desperation leads to innovation. In the mid 70's If I remember correctly our maximum artillary range was about 15 km and the enemy easily matched that. For a South African that was a challenge never a detterent. During ops Protea in 76. The artillary was very effective by deploying hit and run tactics. Set up within enemy range fire a salvo. Pack and run. Even forward/ closer and fire again. This was possible because of high quality reconnaissance Op's and fire direction. Remember old school with binoculars on the ground. No drones. Also spare a thought for the commanders who navigated by map protractor and compass. (30 years before gps) So we developed not only beter range but I believe the mobility aspect was an equaly high priority.
Did a lot of test firing back in 85/86 and can assure you it was put through its phases. One interesting point about the barrel which were at the time machined by Lytteton engineering that when boring and rifling the barrel they could electronically simulate a firing and pick up any faults so as to save on time and money on further machining if the probes dected a fault. To my knowledge at the time there was only one 155mm barrel burst but that was on a G5 during ops Modular.
Both machine and barrel were tested to the extreme at a test site near Remvasmaak.

this one is in Command & Conquer Renegade as Nod artillery.
the g6-rhino the world's top artillery piece.
I love the designs that some of these countries come up with.
A True Beast, in my Opinion, one thing South Africa Got 100% right
The moment I saw this thing's appearance, I immediately had some flashbacks of the Dana Artillery trucks from the Contra mod for Command & Conquer Generals.
Those bastards kept shelling my base.
@Ulfhedinn Tyr That's the Renegade model, the Nod Artillery is the Allied Artillery, which funnilly enough is based off of the M110 which armed with a 8" Howitzer instead of the ingame 155mm.
Thanx so much for this straight forward, comprehensive and factional presentation of one of my favorate artillary pieces. Proudly South African inspite of international boicots.
... I remember this SP in the early-mid 1980's. And the embargo od 155mm shells when South Africa was involved in Angola ... ending the Confederation of South Africa ...
My childhood bestfriends dad used command a G6 during the war and apparently just word of their presence was enough to clear a valley of enemies, they could fire 3 different shot at 3 different target and have every shot land at almost exactly the same time, so theyd park 3 on a few hilltops in the area and could effectively take out anything in said area and be gone before the rounds hit
This would be perfect for the Australian army. But of course they won't. They getting the K9 Thunder.
K9 is also a very capable vehicle but I agree, our wheely boy would be much better suited for the outback
As we South Africans have seen first-hand, international arms deals are not about what a country needs but rather how much money the politicians can pocket in backhanders from the arms manufacturers.
I like also the swedish archer system a lot - but I don't know how well that operates in hot climate. That may not the priority ...
I love South African military vehicles, they are all so super cool!
For some reason this AVF looks really cool to me, almost sci fi
A little known fact outside of South Africa: IIRC both G5's and G6's were used by Saddam against the coalition in the 1991 Gulf War, causing a bit of embarrassment to the South African government at the time. They were apparently quite effective.
@Morton Christie I wasn't aware Iran got any, but I knew about Iraq fielding several G5's.
No G6 vehicles were sold to Iraq. They built one prototype of similar appearance but it was never fielded.
Defo a lot to be said for wheeled AFVs. The reduced logs demands vs tracks is a big selling point.
Very cool Mat! As a South African and a military enthusiast I have always loved these vehicles. I remember when I was still in high school going to the Airshow, seeing a G6 and being handed a frek heavy shell by one of the crew, lol. As always I appreciate your videos, keep up the good work! Massive respect from South Africa.
I came in here expecting comments about C&C: Renegade. I was not disappointed. They also used it as the British Army's "tank" in the movie tie in game fir Reign of Fire on the PlayStation 2, but it only appears in the dragon's campaign.
Additionally at least two separate Transformers, both Decepticons, use the G-6, albeit a fictional half-track version. Skullgrin and Straxus call the G-6 their alt mode.
On a side note, I wouldn't mind seeing it in Armored Warfare.
YES! Going to watch this after work.
YES!
Thank you for finally covering this beast
I was a G6 gunner in the SADF. Very accurate video. Thanks a lot.
My broer was ook op die G6.
Ek verstaan dat my oom 'n G6 bestuur het. Tijmen Van Der Steenhoven
My broer ook.
This AFV really showed its mettle in the Angolan war in the late 1980's with its ability to outrange anything the Cubans could throw at it with Russian equipment. The defeat of the communists was so complete that Castro had the general in charge of the war executed on his return to Cuba. The South Africans however were so magnanimus in their victory that they allowed the Angolans and Cubans to walk away with a draw. It was such a great design (by Gerald Bull) that even today it is comparable to the best artillery in the world.
Actually, the SADF had Luanda surrounded. Overnight the USA signed an oil deal with Angola and the war was over.
Wtf did you smoke… it was a stalemate at best You were stopped dead in your tracks at Cuito Canavale. There was just no way in hell you could take the war any further let alone win in a “Magnanimus” way. LOL. Is that how you cope with the abysmal state your country is in?
im south african and i recently spoke to a homeless vet who manned these g6's in his army time and he told me these thing rain down gods fury from a good few km away and destroy towns and that's when our infantry would go in a pick off the last of the few enemies off
More videos on South African equipment please
Front end looks like front of Freedom Littoral class us navy ship, back a M-109 Palidn and all of it put on a massive front end loader and some how pulls it off to look like a bad ass mobile cannon. Love the content 👍
Sadly, DENEL is currently on the verge to bankruptcy
Sadly they are past that point.
You mean like most companies in South Africa?
orchestrated, to sell off their IP which others want
@@sovietred7371 You mean state run companies right!
a Bunch of missile designs were "stolen" from them recently or am I mistaken?. I remember reading somewhere they got robbed of new missile designs but I could be wrong.
I actually have a buddy who manned one of these during the Angolan border war. They once camouflaged it and did actually use it in close range to take out an Angolan armored personnel carrier (APC). He said it was quite sickening to see how destructive it was at close range. It killed everyone on board the APC - they were there one second and then their body parts went flying all over the next second. He says he'll never forget that sight - they were usually far out of sight when firing the G6. A bunch of nerds really - had to be to use that weapon effectively.
That how is pure bad ass
With all the south African armor in warthunder plus the artillery you can play as in the Japanese tree I think this would be awesome to play as, especially with the speed and the real life anti tank option.
After long waiting since you uploaded the video of rooikat, finally! Many Thanks for uploading.
It is an amazing system, when not operated by the ANC
It’s like you slapped a 155mm on a BTR, like how the Soviets managed to slap the ZiS 2 gun on the Komsomolets arty tractor
I live in the town where these vehicles are stored and used . I can safely say these thins are beasts when it comes to off-roading .
The design of G6 Rhino ah yes a masterpiece east
DAMN! I am SO Jealous! I was M109A2 in W. Germany (85-87). Now we have M109A7 Paladin. I think this kicks ass. Maybe wont beat in every category, but I give it Higher marks in General as it can use any USA/NATO 155mm 1 min from Shoot to scoot. mobility. on hand ammo. water!! many things we could learn from here in the USA.
We got Elon, we need this too!
Plus that last pic.. BOOM!
I would say it out performs Paladin on all levels, with the only possible exception maybe being mobility in muddy terrain...
YES ! A 155 mm !!!
The same companies that developed this awesome world beating machine could not pay their hard working employees in November 2020. While top (mis) management gets production bonuses.
Although it's old now, we developed the base bleed which extended the 155mm range dramatically.
First time I ever saw one was on my way to school and the military had parked it next to a golf course for some reason. I miss living in that neighborhood (Pretoria West). We would sometimes see Ratels being driven to or from the neighborhood. I still don't know what these vehicles were doing their. Motorists would honk their horns and wave at the soldiers whenever they were in transit. My chest would swell with pride.
What if South Africa developed a sabot-round for this thing?
SADF: How many G6 Rhinos do you want?
Other countries DF: Yes.
Sabot on artillery literally makes no sense
@@bruhh249 There are some praktical problems. Like the minimum range of 3000 m. And accuracy. Optics and targeting. Using it as an antitankweapon would be situational at best. And if it misses the Rhino is as good as dead by giving away its location.
@@bruhh249 sabot artillery shells are a thing, for extended range, although considered obsolete compared to rocket-assisted shells.
We did have a 105mm APFSDS, not in 155mm though.
