When u do shattered fortress, do the live version from breaking the 4th wall...your welcome 😉
Shattered fortress PLEASE react to the DVD ! Breaking the fourth wall ! The perfect ending for the 12 step suite !
I think you would like the new Trivium album, heavy but with melody. What the Deam Men Say, Catastophist, Amongst the Shadows and the Stones, the Defiant to name a few. Keep banging out DT too 🤟
Repentance is okay. They straight up jacked the feel of Opeth's Damnation album, and usually they crush it but this one was a bit of a miss.
'In the Name of God' is waiting for you. You'll love it.
Heavy riffs, my friend!
• Endless Sacrifice - Dream Theater
• Honor Thy Father - Dream Theater
Dream Theater - The Dark Eternal Night
Opeth - Porcelain Heart
Porcupine Tree - Way Out of Here
Steven Wilson - The Raven that Refused to Sing
Meshuggah - I Am Colossus
TesseracT - Hexes
😁
A fair judgement/ burden
Porcelain hearts also amazing.
Dream theater - As i am ( The guitar solo will blow your mind ) 😁
Live in budokan
That guitar solo is insane in "As I Am" tis true. Nothing but constant shred with accuracy. But my favorite of his solos will always be the creative "Under A Glass Moon." Followed by "Lost Not Forgotten" solo.
Yep! Also In the Name Of God! It’s off the same album and is my favorite DT song!
The most underated and probably the best solo from Dream Theater is the one from The Shattered Fortress.
”I can feel my body breaking x2, I’m ready!, to let it all go”
*Probably one of my favourite lines in any song*
The Dark Eternal Night would be great after the 12 steps suite
Love TDEN. Drew digs the heavier stuff, so that and Honor Thy Father and A Nightmare to Remember would probably all be instant favorites.
Just for shits and giggles, hope he'll check out "The Dark Nintendo Night'
Haken - Falling back to Earth
Caligula's Horse - Graves
Please do both of those, I know you won't be disappointed 🤟👍😀
"Metropolis 2" is waiting for you
The full album!
I find it best to listen to the suite in its entirety, but starting off with "The Mirror' from their album Awake, which serves as a prelude to the suite as it references the same topic: Mike's struggles with alcoholism. Hopefully once you've reviewed the last two tracks, you'll find the time to do so
It’s so cool to hear those little bits of the past songs along the way. It ties in so well
This song has the best chorus they have ever written imo
A Nightmare to Remember will blow you away
I think you should look into doing "Cockroach King" by Haken; really unique Dream Theater-esque prog metal track
Ooh, will always upvote Haken. Follow "Cockroach King" up with "Pareidolia", that song kicks butt - the whole "The Mountain" album is incredible.
Haken feels like a wonderful offspring of DT's awake era.
endless sacrifice, a nightmare to remember, these walls or breaking all illusions are awesome songs, you should react to them
personally this is one of my favorite dream theater tracks. the whole sonic feel is perfect. nothing overdone, nothing underdone. I've grown out of dream theater largely, but I still consistently enjoy this song
Ive also outgrown Dream Theater, but Im struggling to find anything else to listen to. Do you have any suggestions?
@@zacharykim295 In doubt, it's always Tool.... Always...
I have been a Dream Theater fans for about 20 years, and very rarely have I gone through a first listen of an album and thought "Wow, that was a good one". They always take a few listens to get into.
When u react to the final song The Shattered Fortress you have to do the live version! Such an amazing performance and Dream Theater are all about the live experience💯🤘
Just so you're aware, Repentance won't serve too well for your tasting I think. It's a very slow ballad. In my opinion it's the second best track out of the five, but it's because I love the dark vibe, the spoken words, the chord progressions, the choirs, the lyrics etc. In terms of heaviness, you'll be disappointed. But the last track in the AA-suite, The Shattered Fortress, will strike you a lot better - maybe even better than the majority of what you've heard by Dream Theater.
Rock on 🤘
Totally agree !
Yep, waiting for him to react to The Shattered Fortress :)
Love Repentance and The Shattered Fortress!
The shattered fortress live is amazing btw!
I agree. The shatter fortress in my opinion is the best one
Great video, Love to see your reactions to Dream Theater! Can't wait for your reaction to the next one in the 12 step suite. Youe should alsoe react to some stuff off their album Images and Words (Take The Time, Metropolis Pt1 and Learning To Live are my favourites so i would recomend them)
The version of this song from the Score Anniversary Tour album, with the Octavarium Orchestra, is amazing. Along with every other track on that album.
actually their name Dream Theater comes from the name of a movie theater called "Dream Theater" that drummer Mike Portnoy or one of his family members knew of or saw - the band's original name was "Majesty" based on the Rush song "Bastille Day" and how it sounded to them
Dream Theater: "The Shattered Fortress" "Breaking all Illusions"; both from Breaking the Fourth wall live concert
He's going through the whole 12 step suite, so he'll get to The Shattered Fortress soon.
You should react to Rivers of Nihil, their last album "Where Owls know my Name" is a masterpiece
Images and words! Anyone?
Just ANYTHING from this album!
Why didn’t you do any song from this album yet?
Take the time, pull me under, metropolis 1, wait for sleep AND THEN learning to live(make this two in a row)
Cmon guys! We need to get him into dream theater FOR REAL
Metropolis pt. 1, then ALL of Metropolis pt. 2 (though that's a big ask, there's like 12 tracks. But it really has to be experienced as a whole)
He doesnt like too much the balads and mellow songs, he wants shred , complex signatures. I would boy suggest something like wait for sleep ir similar!
Looking forward to your take on Repentance, since it's quite different from the rest. It has a neat lineup of guests who contributed some spoken word lines: Steve Hogarth (Marillion), Steven Wilson (Porcupine Tree), Jon Anderson (Yes), Steve Vai, Joe Satriani, Mikael Åkerfeldt (Opeth), Corey Taylor (Slipknot), Daniel Gildenlöw (Pain of Salvation), Neal Morse, David Ellefson (Megadeth), Chris Jericho (Fozzy). I'm sure you'll recognize some of the names and voices.
You should do "beyond this life", live in budokan japan.
Filmmaker here. Sound is WAY more important than the background.
I enjoyed every second of your reaction man!!You owen it to yourself to listen THE DANCE OF ETERNITY from Dream Theater! Its prog masterpiece 🔥🔥
More Dream Theater Please
You Must to Listen Dream Theater - Six Degrees of Inner Turbulence ( 42 min )
Great vid as always. Can’t wait for you to do Shattered Fortress; it has one of Petrucci’s most insane guitar solos!
Also, I would love to see you react to Haken - either Cockroach King, Pareidolia, Atlas Stone or 1985 would all be amazing tracks. Very similar to Dream Theater in many ways, but still totally unique.
Nice reaction, nice comments. Just as Marcus Thorén said, Repentance is kind of a slow song, but it´s up to you to listen to it. But for sure you will be blown away by "The Shattered Fortress". After this 12 step suite chain of reactions, maybe you can go back and listen "Metropolis Part 2: Scenes From A Memory", it´s an amazing conceptual album.
Did you notice that "The Root of All Evil" begins from sounds which you can hear in the end of "Octavarium"? So the whole album is like a circle. The story ends where it began)
Definitely would recommend Rivers of Nihil
you should try out from Dream Theater the song Learning To Live
one of my favorites
You have to keep in mind, when these individual songs came out, we had like two years to digest each one... So there are MANY spots where parts refer back to previous songs, and they had become ingrained in our heads by the time we heard each next one. So I can tell that you're not recognizing some of the same riffs being resurrected in different ways, thus, I don't know if you'll quite have the same appreciation for all of this like long-time fans got to. I hope that all made sense. :) Oh, also, when they wrote this, they also kept in mind that when they play it all live, they will need sections of it that are a little slower or melodic for a break for them while playing it live, etc.
Dream Theater - Best of times and Finally Free are their best songs
Waiting this for so long man!! Finally.
Cheers from Chile, South America
What DT fans really want to know is that if you recognise all the crossovers of musical riffs, reprises and melodies across all the tracks? Can’t wait till you do the shattered fortress! It’s the last track and has all the melodies and themes of all the previous tracks!
In my opinion this is the most 'safe' track in the 12 step suite, it has some nice riffs, grooves and vocal melodies, but overall it's kind of a dip down after Glass Prison and Dying Soul. Still a good song for sure, but I always preferred Repentance over this one because it has a more ominous and subdued sound, making it stand out more. No explosive riffs on there though, you'll have to wait until the final song of the suite where they'll end it with a fucking bang.
The Shattered Fortress is underrated. And lets not talk about Petrucci's solo in that one, everyone seems to be sleeping on that solo
I LOVE that little bit of Medicate at the end. That wonderful Octavarium aftertaste
your opinion of this track is probably similar to most DT fans tbh. most people dont dislike it, but its usually not on peoples DT playlists.
Im the same as you, I wont skip this song but I never search for it to listen to it. but if youre gonna do a 12 step suite series, ya kinda gotta do it still lol.
DT definitely has material youd be more into than this. I have a feeling 90% of the train of thought and systematic chaos albums will be right up your alley.
Power Trip - Divine Apprehension
Power Trip - Hornet’s Nest
Power Trip - Crucifixation
You cant san u experienced Dream theater until u have listened Metropolis. Trust me, Metropolis sound is What define the sound of DT
If you mean pt1 i would rather go with take the time or learning to live for example, good track though
Definitely do In the Name of God next!
Live from Budokan version...has a great Petrucci outro 🤟
Cara eu gosto demais dos seus vídeos! Obrigado por reagir a essa banda incrível, abraço aqui do Brasil
Whatever you do, be sure to listen to the live version of the last song in the 12 step suite: The shattered fortress... it is really an amazing amazing performance, blew my mind
I feel the same way about many Dream Theater songs. But when I give the songs several listens I really appreciate them much more. With Dream Theater there is so much to digest!!
Its funny, this is actually my favorite track of the entire suite, and I'm normally drawn to Dream Theater's ultra heavy songs the most.
I know you’re probably done with your TOOL journey but you should react to the fan incident, where Maynard used his MMA background to take down a fan who jumped on stage, while singing. I can send you a link if you want
Please try some Haken - Veil or Celestial Elixir are both absolute bangers that will really suit your style
Dream Theater - Constant Motion 👍
I would love to see Drew do The Odyssey by Symphony X. Another epic 20+ minute song kind of like A Change of Season but just as awesome, if not better!
Check out The Mirror and Lie, they are somewhat related but not much. However, The Mirror, musically, doesn't sound complete without Lie.
Karnivool - themata live in Sydney 🤘🏼
When you are through most of DT you'll need to listen to 'The Shattered Fortress" which combines or recycles riffs from different DT songs into one great song 🤘
that's the final song in this 12 step suite he is working through. next is Repentance, then it's The Shattered Fortress. enjoy!
Its not "recycled" riffs, its has some of the same riffs from the 1st 4 songs of the 12 step suite, they are all tied in.
Jumping on a Rivers of Nihil bandwagon: react to "Where Owls Know My Name", mate.
Hi Drew, could you check out the brand new single "Jurassic" from the band called The Ocean. It features Jonas Renkse from Katatonia and the genre is progressive metal so I bet you'll dig it (and their previous production also from Phanerozoic I: Paleozoic album). Thanks!
"Dream the Dead" by Caligula's Horse
trust me
This album took me 2 years to put in my regular Dream Theater rotation. Until I saw them play it live in the "Score" dvd.
Where is that cute lamp?!?!?!?! I miss it already!!
Opeth A fair judgement/ burden
Finally! 3rd song in 12 suite!
BIG WRECK- GHOSTS or ONE MORE CHANCE!!!
Pale Blue Dot, As I Am or the whole of Metropolis part II (maybe as a milestone special?).
Need to check out Altesia. Paragon Circus only 6 songs but all are epic songs.
Can't wait for you to get to the final song in this series - The Shattered Fortress! Repentance is pretty underwhelming but just wait for that finale!
Caligula's Horse - Into the White
The next one, Repentance, is significantly slower than the other songs in the "12 step suite". But it's designed to be that way, according to Portnoy. The intention was for it to be a "breather" if Dream Theater ever performed the suite in its entirety. Even though it is slow, it's still a great song. I particularly love the guitar solo.
Also, Portnoy invited a some of his friends to submit a spoken word bit to a section of the song. I think there's list if every guest vocal on there, somewhere online, but some of them are David Ellefson of Megadeth, Steve Hogarth of Marillion and Mikael Akerfelt of Opeth.
If you want very progressive rock, but no crazy screaming, type "The .7 Compromise" into the search bar of youtube. It's an album by a super obscure band called S.T.E.M. Almost nobody has heard of them, but they are amazing. They did the one album, then fell off the face of the earth. I'd recommend starting with "Type 12", "Prog", or "1916". You're welcome.
Please listen to These Walls, it’s my favorite Dream Theater song
Trivium - Beyond oblivion
Panic Attack is not a part of the AA-Suite.
I think he mistakenly said that. He only mentioned Glass Prison and Dying Soul afterwards in concern of the AA-suite. He has done Panic Attack though 'on the side' of things.
True. Great song but not part of the suite
I think he was referring to the last DT song he reacted to
en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Twelve-step_Suite
@@kayfreyer Trust me, I am very aware of Portnoy's AA-suite. I never said I was unsure.
Haken - The Architect
Opeth - Hessian Peel
Rush - Natural Science
Opeth please ;(
The Best of Times
React to Spiritbox - Holy Roller
Angra -Carry On
This is the first Dream theater song i've heard ever around 20 years ago and it BLEW ME AWAY from the first riff..... I'm disappointed you didn't "like" it.... Anyway... Maybe watch the live version (Score)...
Repentance is a ballad track so don't go into it with the mindset of getting your head blown off, it's better enjoyed knowing you're going into a slow, moody yet dark song.
2nd request for Haken - The Architect or Veil - Falling back to earth, or 1985, there's so many - Visions - anything Haken - Invasion.....thanks
Constant Motion if you want something crazy!
Bruh, you gotta do another dimension by liquid tension experiment. Its dream theater without james lagay
I would gently suggest skipping 'Repentance' and just going straight to the final 3 parts ('The Shattered Fortress'). Repentance isn't really a proper song, it's mostly just snippets of Mike Portnoy's friends talking about regrets from their past. Portnoy said that song was meant as an 'interlude' if they played all 12 parts live (which sadly never happened), kinda like a break before the final burst.... but then again, you may just want to do for the sake of completion.
Plus if you like 'short' Dream Theater songs you might enjoy some of James LaBrie's solo stuff. 'Agony' and 'Undertow' are both great.
Portnoy actually did play the suite with I believe haken a year or two ago
I'd like to recommend Something I recently discovered... Do "superhero jagganath" by the Diablo Swing Orchestra... My Mind blew away with that one! Rock on
well... looks like you need to listen to the shattered fortress next ;)
or repentance.... maybe do both in the one video... I wont spoil why but IMO repentance isn't worth its own video
I wouldn’t worry about the backdrop too much .. thanks for the review .. Repentance might be a bit of a letdown compared to other DT tracks you’ve reviewed. I’d recommend Illumination Theory live or my favorite DT track Endless Sacrifice .. thanks and stay safe
Hey man,
I really like watching your reacts but I miss subtitles in pt-br because not everything you say I can understand. I don't know if it's within reach, but it's feedback
PLEASE! YOU HAVE TO LISTEN AND REACT TO "ILLUMINATION THEORY" OR "A NIGHTMARE TO REMEMBER" BY DREAM THEATER! THOSE SONGS ARE TERRIFIC AND INCREDIBLE!!!
try Riverside .... second life syndrome... a nice journey!
Or Escalator Shrine which is like 70's prog!
Opeth - Burden
BETWEEN THE BURIED AND ME - SELKIES: THE ENDLESS OBSESSION.
Great reaction drew any idea when we are getting back to opeth? Try hessian peel, i think youll love it :)
He is not listening to us now😔
@@geetbehera3593 ikr :(
@@kalebcech2362 he has recorded Hessian peel !!
@@geetbehera3593 how do you know?
Kaleb Cech there’s a comment in his latest video
I agree Bro, to me it's middle tier track from DT, not the best, not the worst.
You got my like as always.
I don't really like Repentance, to me it's low tier.
I'd love for you to react to "Stream of consciousness" - their best instrumental track , to me the best instrumental ever made and definitely in the top 5 DT tracks (it's "only" 11 mins).
You might be reluctant because you like LaBrie's voice but trust me it's worth it ;)
Isn’t Labrie’s voice is the worst thing about DT. DT-him is epic
If you love Dream Theater, you'd definitely like the better version of them which is "Symphony X", jokes apart you SHOULD check their songs "Evolution,The Odyssey,Inferno, Rediscovery pt 2" , most underrated band arguably
Though I love Repentance (the next song in the suite), you may as well just skip right to The Shattered Fortress because I just don’t think Repentance will be your cup of tea. The Shattered Fortress WILL be your pitcher of tea.
Next one is Repentance, keep in mind it is a soft balad not of your favorite taste. For the last one "the shattered fortress" PLEASE ! react to the live version in the "breaking the fourth wall DVD" available in You tube. Great reactions !
Why would he watch the finale of Mike Portnoy’s 12-step suite being performed by not-Mike Portnoy? 😂
Shhhhh he doesnt know that ;) !! It's the best live version of that song ,
Make a video on (EMIWAY'S- ROUND ONE) a complete English rap.. He is just🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥 🔥 🔥 I'm sure u will be liking it...
People in the comments keep asking for the weakest DT tracks I'm like WTF :P are you insane? lol
Where's:
"Six degrees of inner turbulence" and "Metropolis pt2" as a whole,
"Take the time",
fucking "Voices" or "Caught in a web",
"Scarred",
"Lines in the sand" and ""Trial of Tears",
"Space-dye Vest" or "Lifting shadows of a dream",
"In the presence of Enemies",
"Honor Thy Father" and "Endless Sacrifice",
"At wit's End" and "The best of times" to name a few and so on..
I guess they are just casual listeners who stop for a minute for some quality prog and guitar shredding and then go back to listen to nightwish or babymetal.
Dream Theater is not about shredding, they might bacame popular because of it but they are something more in reality, I'm glad you did Change of seasons amazing pick! cheers :)
