Fischer was becoming a star in the chess world when he became a grand master at age 15. He was quick to notice, when he would go to a chess tournament, he would always win, get a trophy and a very small percentage of the take, whereas the organizer would take the lion's share. So he let it be known that if the winner's share was not much, he would not show up. The organizers realized they had to increase the share because when Fischer said he wasn't going to come to a certain chess tournament and why, the attendance was a tiny fraction of what it could be. So the winner's share was greatly increased. This meant the difference between Fischer staying in a motel instead of a five star hotel. Before Fischer came on the scene, tournament chess players winners did not make much.
Yes! Which is why he almost didn't show to play Spassky in the 1972 World Championship.
