My favourite marinade for tofu and tempeh so far is 2 parts olive oil, 1 part tamari, and 1 part sesame oil. Garlic can be added too, or any other savoury you can think of.

Just used this technique to bake one package of firm tofu. The tofu was marinated overnight. It was Yummy!😋 My husband and I ate it all. We are not vegan but this recipe is making us consider it! Thanks for sharing the Delicious! 🙏🏽

For my baked tofu I let it set for several hours in a soy sauce based marinade in the fridge, then bake it.

Its amazing how much you can come to love tofu as the years go on after giving up meat. That’s my basic marinade except I find a little maple syrup to offset the saltiness of the tamari works the best.

I had 2 x 350 tofu in the fridge - used soya sauce instead of the tamarind and added some lemon juice (because I was told years ago that it helped absorb protein) to your recipe and I love it! I keep snaking on it! I just eat it as is….I need to watch that!
Thank you so much for this base tofu recipe!

I've used a very similar recipe pretty frequently over the past month or so. I do have a one question and would love to get your opinion.
Do you ever use arrowroot powder/cornstarch in the marinade to help make this even crispier? Or is that something you usually omit?

I'm not them, but have been vegan for 24 years and eat tofu every day. You can certainly use a starch, I usually use organic potato starch. But, even better, freeze the tofu first, you can see my directions in a comment from today above.

I love baked tofu, but I don't always like the ones you can buy. I have extra-firm in the fridge right now. Guess I know what I'm making tonight. Maybe I'll use both blocks and freeze the extra.

Can you freeze the tofu once you baked it? I'm kind of afraid the crystallization would hurt it, do you have experience with that? Great recipe though! @Wicked Foods

Are these grilled or baked? I was very surprised when the tops were browned but not the bottoms. I also have a gas oven but I typically flip tofu halfway through because things tend to brown on the bottom where they are in direct contact with the baking tray.

Hey! Freeze the tofu first (in the package), then thaw it in the fridge, then do this recipe--or anything else, trust me!! 20 years vegan and never did that, but then learned and I've been doing that ever since, with every pack of tofu, no matter what I do with it. ❤️🙏 Please try it.

I hope someone can answer a question for me. I am just having my first experience with tofu. What is good fresh tofu supposed to smell like right out of the package? This one I just opened has a strong chemical smell to it. It has even made my eyes sting a little. It is over a month within the use by date, so it isn't out of date. I am afraid to cook and eat it. Help please.
