I just saw this video and i have to share an amazing story about medieval fashion. I was prepareing a costume for comicon and the character La Andromeda promethieum has a very unique black gown. by accident when making a mockup of a medieval gown from an authentic recreated pattern for a surviving garment the shape of it was very similar to the characters. i made the gown with the added futurist alterations which was just sleeves being fitted only to being to drop lightly a few inches above the wrist and a shooting heart star shaped false peekaboo slit in the front. other then those two alterations the shape and style of the gown is a medieval garment after lining it up with the full lengh photo of the anime character and her dress it's a match. Although the anime film is from the 80's set in the soon to be 2000's it's amazing that a medieval garment was reintroduced into a futuristic film.
PA Bran was just serving as your beverage-checker! The cotehardie came out beyond beautiful. What a brilliant touch with the serger to give you the option for later adjustments - and making it of black linen so all Bran fur is invisible. I have to admit I'm jealous - I have the exact same buttonhole foot and I swear mine hates me. What blessing or curse did you put on yours to make it work???
It doesn’t work all the time. There were 3 or 4 of the 33 that I had to redo or fix. So that’s a 10% failure rate. Mostly I go slowly and scootch it along with my fingers to help it.
Your cotehardie is delightful--it has that glove-like fit that makes you look like you stepped right out of an illustration. And the fourteenth century seems apt these days--a reminder of where we would be without the medical advances of the last 700 years. Even without them, they got through it and so shall we. Soon, I hope.
@@OpusElenae I can imagine the elderly clucking about the fit of a particular woman's cotehardie. And how those elderly people's elders disapproved of their fashion choices. It's just mild shock and disapproval all the way back, in much the same way it is turtles all the way down.
“Next time I’m putting vodka in this….” Your production Assistant and mine have apparently been attending the same Union meetings where tea theft has been discussed. Great work on this project! It looks so elegant!
Yay! You're back. I watched the earlier one just to see how much sense it made without sound or captions, and it was actually not bad - your filming and editing are getting really good.
A lovely MLBD. :) Your mockup is the exact colour of my only 14th Century kirtle. :) May you have many opportunities to wear such an elegant addition to your wardrobe. It would also make a fantastic item to wear at Samhain with a few accessories.
I always enjoy watching and learning from your videos. I absolutely love this outfit and look forward to seeing it together with the block print ensemble.
Beautiful, careful sewing. For the life of me, and despite listening over and over, I still can't work out how you finished off the sleeve insertion to get that lovely clean finish. Did you have the overlocked lining come over to cover the rest? Thanks for posting - I love your work!
Yup! I sewed the sleeve together and serged the sleeve head to finish both layers together. Then I inserted the sleeve into the armscye. Then I trimmed the armscye seam allowance, on the body, to 1/4”. Then I folded the serged sleevehead over and hand sewed it down to the body fabric. Is that a little clearer?
It’s AWESOME!!!!!! If I’m seeing correctly, the only underpinnings are your shift. There is no structure or boning to the garment. Or to any under layer I love that!!! The more I look at historical costuming, the more I love this era.
Yup, just my smock! Two layers of linen is supportive enough for me, though quite frankly, I have a good amount of, uh, natural elasticity, that allows me to need very little external support.
It's wonderful. I'm forever fascinated by the way that simple shapes come together to make such an elegant garment. It looks lovely on you. Take care of yourself, Tornado, and Bran.
Thank you! Hm, it depends on how finely the thread is spun. When people who spin talk about making yarn for garments (ie: knitting a sweater), they generally do so in terms of weight instead of length.
I'm just sitting here thinking what a good idea it is to write the date on your patterns, I've got to steal that idea. Also I love your little buttonhole chisel. It looks so lovely! All that time spent sewing buttons definitely worth it.
