After riding regional trains in the morning from Dieppe to Paris, it's quite a change to hop on an international TGV from Paris Gare de L'Est to Luxembourg. A service that is timetabled to have an average speed of over 100mph!
Oh, and there's also a chance to relax into the lovely TGV 1st class seats and make time for a coffee in the café/bar whilst speeding through the French countryside at 320 km/h.

Dirty train windows, the bane of the YT travel vlogger. That being said, you still produced a very enjoyable video.

Enjoyed the video. Whenever I travel on a TGV I try to book the upper deck, better view and from the look of the departing train the upper windows were significantly cleaner.
yes, I want to travel on the upper deck but I was automatically given the lower by the booking system that I can use with my Interrail ticket. I have found out that you can call a helpline to get your reservation changed. One of the downsides of Interrail.

Excellent video again Johnny, nice train, but shame about the state of the windows😟, still at least the cafe windows were cleaner. You mentioned the Orient Express, obviously there is no way I could ever justify paying all that money! However, quite a few years ago I had a day trip, from Victoria to Dover and back, on the British Pullman and it was very luxurious. I really couldn’t fault it, a welcoming glass of Champagne, and sumptuous five-course lunch as you enjoy looking at the English countryside travelling at a somewhat slower pace than 100mph!
Seeing how much you love train journeys, then maybe a trip to consider for the future🤔😊
I'll have a look as someone else has mentioned it. It's just whenever I see any of those rail tours I find I can do something on modern trains for less money that I would enjoy more!

Brilliant video! I adore Luzembourg (mostly for it's free travel!) and travelled on Belgium's national operator to Luxembourg, though your service seems a bit nicer than my train (Albeit the dirty window)! Love the SNCF 'jingle' too - you always know your in France when you hear that! Can't wait to see what else you got up to!

Thanks! I'm working on trying to get a sure-fire way of getting an upper deck seat if travelling on an Interrail ticket. If I can't, then I'll go back to buying a proper ticket and picking my seat because I think I owe it to you viewers to have a better view out of the window!

In my own experience the dirty windows are mainly a problem in winter (also in other countries). The faster a train goes, the more it picks up dirt and grime, combined will less washing cycles (because when it's freezing, I suspect they don't send them through the train washer). And the east of France has a more continental climate, with significantly more frosty days than e.g. in Bordeaux. Once beyond March, the dirty window situation visibly improves.
Yes. Although in the UK The train windows often get covered with dust in the summer and are still a little difficult to see through when the sun shines on them

Yes,indeed it is. I shall be returning to travel around the country (using those free trains and trams and buses) in the future. I was really impressed with the countryside north of the main city and would like to explore more.
I did this service from Metz-Paris Est a year ago. It was my first time on a "true" high speed service at 300kmh (looking at you ICE). The speed was breathtaking, particularly when racing along the motorway.
Yes. when I went on my first TGV down to Marseille last year I thought it was all it was cracked up to be. That (as you say) "true high speed" really is something else.

Coming up in the next couple of videos will be trips via the two main northbound routes out of Luxembourg in Belgium - both really cool routes (even in the rain). I did not spend time outside of Luxembourg city itself, but I have vowed to return and discover more of this lovely little country.

Wonderful job as always Johnny! TGVs pretty much living up to its standards and I am always grateful living in France to be able to hop on one at my local station and be in places like Paris in a mere 5 hours from city centre to city centre.
Btw, I'm still not sure about the next gen TGV-M naming moniker though... Maybe they should call it the TGX 😉 (JK and that'll be the end of that joke from me 😅)

I only travelled on TGV in 2022 between Metz and Strasbourg. Still, whilst being a TGV, it was the low cost Ouigo service which was also great
Yes. I will review the Ouigo in the future, as it is a pretty decent service and it is very cost effective indeed!

You are certainly making use of your InterRail ticket. Another very interesting and informative video. I travelled into Gare de l'Est a year ago from Saarbrücken. It was an ICE TGV and was very comfortable and clean (the windows too!). The only problem I experienced was on the platform at Saarbrücken the carriage correspondence displays contradicted one another. There was both an Sncf display and a Die Bahn display and my carriage A was going to be either at the rear or the front of the train. Not being able to find which was correct, I decided to stand where the centre of the train would be when it arrived from Hamburg ?? The ICE TGV arrived and of course I had to run with a large bag and a folded Brompton to my carriage ... I made it. Just in time. The journey, I must say was brilliant. Lovely scenery and the carriage monitors would display the speed. When up to speed travelling on the LGV line it really started to move. The top speed was 320km/hr. It felt like there was no contact with terra firma as we hurtled towards Gare de l'Est. A journey well worth the experience.

The next two trips are both runs between Luxembourg and station in Belgium - as both routes north out of Luxembourg are very scenic. I would like to return to Luxembourg though, as what I saw when travelling through to Belgium warranted a much closer inspection (and the trains are free too!)

Yes, that's my feeling. You can expect a ride on a Frecciarossa in Italy this year on the channel and hopefully a lot of other high speed rides!
Indeed, it is recurrent, the SNCF neglects the external cleanliness of its trains. A question of image that she has difficulty taking into account.
Yes - even the exterior decals are often worn and peeling, but they just seem to carry on anyway, even though they look a bit tatty.
Mind you, it is still a wonderful train and a great service!

Absolutely right! Total cost to me 1st Class was about £30 plus €8 for the TGV seat reservation. Good deal I reckon!

Pity about the condition of the windows but still a good report, as usual. I don’t know much about Luxembourg; will have to do a little Googling.
Wrt Lux - neither did I, so kinda why I went. The city is lovely and the countryside up north in the Ardennes is very beautiful. I will return and explore more.
Go to the city in the summertime, and you will be able to spend 2-3 days there walking and exploring. It's a very pretty city with a lot more to see than you might expect. And the countryside is nice for hiking, too. Clervaux, Diekirch and some other smaller cities are also lovely to visit (possibly combined with these hikes). From Luxembourg, you can also easily visit Trier in Germany, which is one of the oldest Roman settlements in the area. And if you like trains, you will enjoy the line along the Moselle river all the way to Koblenz. But there is also a very beautiful line from Euskirchen to Tree (via Gerolstein) that is a lot less known.
Hi Jonny - Great video. Out of interest, how did you book the 8 euro Interrail booking reservation? I've only ever seen 10 euro fees for TGV, plus ended up paying an extra 4 euro booking fee on top through B-Europe. I think maybe Rail Europe now offer the reservation for only 10 euro without an added booking fee, but not tried that. Thanks.

Damn - I was wrong - it was €8 + €4, just like you said. Hmm - been making a lot of mistakes lately. I need to tighten up.
Looks ike RailEurope lets you pick lower or upper deck, window or aisle seat and table seat or not on duplex TGVs. They also tell you which seat they have selected for you before you go to the payment page, but I don't think you can change their selection - although I suppose you could try another booking until you get a seat selection you are happy with - so might be worth having a look at them for further interrail bookings. As I say I have not tried them yet, so I might be missing some additional hidden fees. Anyway, another wonderful video and looking forward to next week ...

I'll assume you can't book seats on the top deck.
The problem was that with Interrail i just got allocated a seat when I made the seat reservation which i could not change. But if you are buying a ticket, then you can select your exact seat.
One has to wonder what there is in Thionville to deserve a TGV stop...
Beats me! But I'm not from round there. I suspect it has something to do with being close to the border...

It's so people have a 320km/h way to get the fuck out of there
It is actually the station with the most passengers from and to Luxembourg. There were 226,000 cross-border workers in Luxembourg in 2023. This constitutes about 47% of the country's workforce, with approximately 50% living in France. Many live in the immediate vicinity of the border. There is only one railway line between Luxembourg to France, and the first stop is Thionville. So there are many local trains, but also the TGV is popular with commuters (despite the fact that seat reservation is mandatory). Many commuters will continue their journey by car, and will park at Thionville station. The car parks there have space for thousands of cars.
