I'll go to bat for Jura. It's weak specs aside the 14 year old Rye cask is a decent offering. It's cheap and not just cheap for a 14/15 yo but cheaper than most 10/12 yo too. This may sound like a back handed compliment but it's a great scotch-i-tizer haha like you are going to have a few drams and its a great level setter, especially if you are getting into some good stuff as it has some nice subtle hints while also having that rye edge in the background. I'll admit anything younger is pretty weak but the 14 takes it up a notch taste wise while still being extremely inexpensive.
I would like you to include the prices for the products. It doesn't matter if the price varies by region. It provides a useful ballpark figure for your viewers. Cheers.
Glen Moray is an unpretentious solid brand, and their whiskies are priced accordingly, and their $90-100 18yo is one of the best values going. It's nothing magical (few are) but it's very good.
I really like my 12 year old travel exclusive 48% Glen Moray. It was a little soapy at first but after a while it's a really great simple whisky flavoured whisky.
Gotta agree with you on Tomintoul 14. I think it's a lovely whisky and it's the one I've been drinking all this week. Another great review, Geoff - well done! 👍

I ordinarily don't buy Glenlivet, but I stocked up on a few bottles of Glenlivet 12 Illicit Still, which I really like. I wish they'd add it to their core. And it is very affordable. Nadurra isn't bad, either. That Glen Moray 18 is very decent for the price, but I prefer to spend the little extra for something I consider superb, like a Speyburn 18. I got that Glen Rothes Maker's Cut for half price ($49 USD). It was definitely worth it at that price, but it is a little too sherry bomb rich for my tastes. It does hit the spot under the right circumstances, though, such as on a chilly night by the campfire. Cheers!
I liked the Port Wood and the Cigar Malt very much. Typically I'm not a huge fan of very cask-forward whiskies, but I think Dalmore has some excellent cask play. Just don't tell the whisky community I said so. 😉🥃
Great topic Geoff. I have a couple of Dalmore, Bowmore & Glenrothes and there are some good expressions from each. I have a preference for Islay drams so definitely pro-Bowmore. G I still love the GM 18 and a few years ago asked you to review it(thank you you did). As it was newer in my whisky journey I moved away to more challenging expressions and only recently went back to it. I still like the straight 1st fill Bourbon cask aging and easy drinking with a hint of spice. Probably GM’s best!
Hi Geoff... another excellent video, interesting list indeed, although I have only tried the Glenfiddich VAT 04, and the truth is the ABV makes a very positive difference compared to the core range, also the VAT 03 a 15 y.o. is another that I would recommend without a doubt. About Glen Moray 100% agree, certainly the most affordable 18 y. o. (in my market), and unlike other producers they are not pretentious at all, I think what they offer justifies the price of their other bottles as well. Cheers! 🥃
Yeah that Maker's Cut is pretty solid, I do like Glenfiddich as well and those VAT releases are actually all pretty good, haven't tried the 14 but I'm getting warmer towards Tomintoul in general, yeah the sherry cask is much better than the 12 for sure, I also agree with the Bowmore which I quite like for what it is. That mystery pour is fantastic bang for buck. Nice one dude, cheers 🥃
Great topic, Geoff. I was just talking about how that particular bottle from Distillery No. 5 elevates that distillery's range. We'll see what happens next ...
I'll speak up for the Dalmore Sherry Cask Select and the Bowmore 18. These are two of my favorites, especially the Dalmore. The Dalmore is well worth the dough. Hello Geoff, 1. I prefer Glenrothes as IBs since they changed the Age Statement from Vintage to Years and NAS. Right now i have open a Bottling from Hunter Laing (Old Particular) 17yo SherryButt Cask Strength Delicious but not to compare with OBs😅. 2. I avoid the Fiddich not because i think its bad Stuff. I dont grab it because its not interesting enough😅. 3. I had a Tomintoul 16 Standard and an IB which was a really hot Spirit (not in a good Way!) So... yep, i dont buy it anymore. 2 very different Versions, 2 Dissapointments. Done for now. 4. I had the King Alexander... a few Years (or maybe a Decade😅) ago and it was quite good. Unfortunately the Price didnt remain where i remembered so i didnt bought it again. I had some other OBs from them and it wasnt the Quality i expected (+ the ABV and Colouring Issue)😅 5. I pretty much like their Bottlings, especially the older ones mostly to find as IBs. They are really great Malts but when it comes to buying a whole Bottle, somehow for no Reason i never grab a Bowmore😂. 6. I would add Ardbeg to that List because of their Behavior in Terms of „unscrupulous priced Special Editions and Committee Releases, Lack of Information on their Bottles, not responsive Customer Support, Batch Variations without mentioning different Batches and so on. I'm really sad about this, but i cant buy even their High Quality Standards because of these Problems. Thanks for sharing your Thoughts and Opinion about these Bottlings. Greetings from Germany 😎🤘
The one Glenfiddich I was impressed by is an odd one, likely the only peated whisky they make. It is their 'Fire and Cane', a lightly peated whisky finished in Carribbean rum casks. I liked it enough to go out and buy a bottle.

Greeat video - you shouldn't receive any hate for the "most disliked" distilleries video... A little thing to add: Sadly the Tomintoul 14 is not fully natural: They dropped the "natural colour" statement (now it states only "high strength") a few years ago - pretty sad.

Yes, Macallan 12 Sherry is 43% and drinks well, but how can anyone who knows about this stuff choose it over say Bunnahabhain 12 Cask Strength at the same price or GlenDronach 12 for $20 less? Macallan survives off over low-info customers and their allies in the liquor shops who push their stuff ✌️

@@TalkingTorah613 I agree that Macallan has a unique signature and tends to make good whisky despite its anemic pedigree, but $85-90 on average around NYC (but I've seen it for as much as $150), is absurdly overpriced and I can't recommend it because of that; and the similarly pedigreed GlenDronach 12 is a $65 bottle where I shop, and that's a significant enough price difference to mention IMO. It's a good bottle that drinks similar to the far pricer Macallan. As for Bunnahabhain 12 Cask Strength, it's ultimately a matter of taste, but as far as value goes it's a no-brainer and I'd unhesitatingly recommend it, any vintage, to anyone reading this, especially experienced drinkers ✌️
Bought the Tomintoul 14 a couple of years ago because of it's specs. Very underwhelming for me. Bowmore vault edition 1 is Fantastic ! Worth hunting down if you want the spirit and delicate peat character front and center. Glen Moray 18 is total quality 47.2% ncf full maturation in 1st fill bourbon. Side by side beat Deanston 18 every time for me Cheers
Jeff, do you know some history about Macallan? For example, how did all the fluff about Macallan being "the best" scotch etc come into vogue? Was it recently 1995 onwards or was it over the years?
Aberlour was my first true dram and I fell hard. Then I realized that it's not that beloved by enthusiasts and I learned about ABV, chill filtration and E150. I still come back to it from time to time for the memories. However, in that sea of poorly presented whisky you have the A'bunadh, which is one of my favorite scotches.
I find it amusing to classify Glenfiddich as an unpopular distillery. They sell a lot of whiskey. Besides their being allergic to putting out stuff over 40% their stuff tastes good.
It's unpopular among enthusiasts, who this channel caters to. Most of the top selling brands (Macallan, Glenlivet, Glenfiddich, etc ) aren't widely liked among enthusiasts. We're a very picky and whiny bunch.
eh, i'll drink a lot of cheap stuff and enjoy it, but have tried glenfiddich early on and then came back to it later with more experience, and was bad both times. the malt note just seems off. same problem with their sister distillery balveine
A different channel made a blind taste tournament and Glenrothes 12 dominated. Maybe give it another chance (preferably comparing it blind to a similar whisky)?
Agree with most of the list, would swap Glenrothes with Jura. Very rarely I hear about them, nor does any of my friends like/appreciate it. I’m not judging here, just sharing my observations😉
Thanks for shining a dislike on these brands, Geoff. As an (almost) only IB whisky drnker, what the hell am I doing here other than just annoying you? For the record, the brands are mostly no surprises. Slàinte mhath
After a few years on UA-cam I've become pretty used to it. Couldn't tell you how many times I've had to remind people that it's all subjective opinion. 🥃
LOL. No need to defend your ideas against weenies. Whisky and weenies just never seem to go well together... Always puzzles me when people get offended about personal taste in whisky. I like asparagus. Oddly, I don't get all butthurt if someone doesn't like asparagus.
Weird video, bro. Not sure why you're, in a way, apologizing to those cry babies with a basic/pedestrian taste in whiskey. They can go kick rocks with bare feet while sipping on their chill filtered, color added, 40% ABV overpriced baby whiskeys.
Ah thought I fixed the pronunciation from the last video. I'll nail it next time, though! 😉 I'll have to try that Seiridh. Also want to try their Cigar Malt. Cheers! 🥃
For me I won’t buy Dalmore, Macallan, Glen-leave-it, Bowmore (except the 18 :), Jura (Indie bottles are actually not bad) and there are a few others including Caol Ila core range HOWEVER Caol Ila indie bottles are in my top 10 favourites. What the actual front door is going on with that?

A'bunadh is legendary stuff! I still come back to it myself from time to time. 🥃
Aberlour 12yo un-chillfiltered @ 46% is great! Try it if you can
I find it amusing to classify Glenfiddich as an unpopular distillery.
@@Gwhisky oh I know, I just enjoy pushing the enthusiast’s buttons once in a while.
@@jasonwest9425 We deserve it. 😉
eh, i'll drink a lot of cheap stuff and enjoy it, but have tried glenfiddich early on and then came back to it later with more experience, and was bad both times. the malt note just seems off. same problem with their sister distillery balveine
I am first here 🎉 nice suggestions. I wonder if there is any good Jura out there?
So do I. I hear they're around out there. To be fair I've had a few that were decent. Usually average or below average, though. 🥃
Ive had a Douglas Laing Old Particular which was a 15 year old a was great tbf. I reckon you could find a solid IB but idk about core.
Cadenhead Jura 12 manzanilla cask
The trouble with Macallan is that for the price there is nothing extraordinary about any of its products.
Glenrothes is just brutal swill.
A different channel made a blind taste tournament and Glenrothes 12 dominated. Maybe give it another chance (preferably comparing it blind to a similar whisky)?
macallan is the bench mark of sherrued whiskies. youare correct in that they are overpriced
the bowmore seems tasteless to me ;;
Agree with most of the list, would swap Glenrothes with Jura.
Best is Kilchoman PX
It cracks me up that people get defensive about whiskies they like and someone else doesn't. So fragile!
After a few years on UA-cam I've become pretty used to it. Couldn't tell you how many times I've had to remind people that it's all subjective opinion. 🥃
Isnt Macallan,Dalmore,Whyte & Mckay very unpopular...
@@iancrombie8862 pretty sure they are popular.
Unpopular among enthusiasts. They sell very well, of course. 🥃
Tomintoul (" - toil" as in toy'll) is really hit+miss / the Seiridh (sherry) is amazing with eh Euro-cask of oloroso.
Ah thought I fixed the pronunciation from the last video. I'll nail it next time, though! 😉
I'll have to try that Seiridh. Also want to try their Cigar Malt. Cheers! 🥃
Uhh no, I’m from Moray and his pronunciation was spot on this time. It’s Towel as in bath towel.
Yes, definitely 'towel'....
not a single Macallan is worth the price they ask, i can buy multiple bottles of better whisky at cheaper price (i hate this brand 😈).
Totally fair.
Dalmore 12 Sherry Casks is a $90 bad joke, just like Macallan 12 Sherry Oak.
You mean the sherry cask or the regular 12. The regular 12 I'm not a fan of, but the Sherry Cask Select at USD $50 in my market is fantastic imo. 🥃
@@Gwhisky I just checked around and I saw the Sherry Cask Select for $90. At $50 it would be a good buy...kinda.
@@Gwhisky I'd like you to do a blind tasting of several ~40% Sherried malts, including this Dalmore and $30 Glen Moray Elgin Classic Sherry Cask Finished, and tell us what you think.
Come on Geoff. Unbutton more of that shirt. Lesbe honest, I didn't come here for the whisky reviews 😂
