You should come and see how the relationships work amongst the Aboriginal Australians, especially in the north of Australia where they still do things traditionally and still have culture if i dare say.
I myself have half brothers who are Aboriginal, and according to their traditions I have more than one mother and have met about 5 of them. Also I don't have any children of my own but according to their traditions each child from my biological half brothers is also my child and their children are my grandchildren. I'm still not used to meeting and remembering so many relatives whenever I see them. I even know that one brother had a kid with one of his wives, they broke up and one of the other brothers went and had a kid with her too, so those kids are cousins and brothers at the same time! Still blows my mind.

In the olden days in some places in Sweden a couple could have a trial marriage, which worked kind of as an engagement and the man and woman would live together, but if the woman didn't get pregnant they could end the arrangment and part ways. This was very much frowned upon by the church though and was technically illegal.

I think they call that "handfasting" in english. The so called dark ages were not as restrictive as the church made it seem, sure the aristocrats had to be absolute virgins etc but in a regular village the boys and girls did date and do some night visits and broke up if they wanted. One description I remembered was that the girl would wear a rag soaked in vinigar around her neck at night before a special day like a fair, so at least her neck would be free from bugbites. Ah such romance, there were a lot of fleas and bedbugs back then standard.
