this album in particular has a level of minimalism to it in many spots, and a few of the tracks break traditional rules of production and mixing, but it works because of the intent.
so basically, there needs to be intent, and i think a minimalist approach to making music is a very good way of honing that for yourself

It’s supposed to be open to interpretation but to the singer at least he said it simply means a metaphysical list of things you want so badly that you know you can never have.
It's about making out with somebody drunkenly at a party and catching feelings but knowing they don't feel the same way, at least that's what I remember Jamie saying about it in an interview

Why everyone say this is so f*cking sad but no one explain why when people ask? 🤔
Imma go on a quick yap sesh but i see this song as the end of someones life via taking it themself. I see the whole album as the last days of a depressed person before they take their own life. I find it sad with the sad chord progression and the incredibly depressing lyrics Jamie Stewart lays out. especially with the scary but hard to listen to (emotionally) synth sounds. at the very end where the synths explode as i think they represent the moment the suicide happens via hanging, just like Ian Curtis. This song could even represent the last moments of Ian Curtis. Even if or if not its incredibly heartbreaking and i dont usually listen to this on itself cause of the power it has over me. but yea thats my explanation of the song and i would love to hear yours!

I remember when this came out and it was ED-GY my friends. We got inside jokes forever on this guy's lyrics. Went to SWANS to heckle Xiu Xiu but then got stuck drinking and didn't see them. Swans was too loud for me to go "Play the song called Shit Shit!" between songs. Oh yeah, and remember Pitchfork? If you ever saw a tongue velcroed to someone's balls, that was them over this album
