This is Abbie. Love watching your family. We made a chicken run just like yours - we got cheaper wire and stretched it across the top - it will keep hawks out, and chickens can't get out ❤
I never realized Andy was left handed. Lol. Also, I use the recipe that Tipper Presley shared on her channel for biscuits. Use 2 cups self rising flour and 1 cup heavy whipping cream. Stir together, may need to use a little more cream for desired consistency of dough. You can knead if desired, but I just roll and cut mine out with my biscuit cutter. Bake at 400° until golden. Surprisingly easy and good! You can adjust the 2 to 1 ratio for desired amount of biscuits. Hope you all have a wonderful Thanksgiving holiday. Thanks for sharing your family with us.
My grandfather put a post in back in 1917 at the family cemetery. in about 1975 we attempted to take it out and replace the fence with a chain link fence. The roots of a maple had grown around it and we could not pull it out of the ground, so we said lets just cut it off flush with the ground when we stuck the chainsaw to it, sparks flew from the chain. We left it. I was there this spring and that post is as solid as the day grand-paw put it in the ground I was told it was an Osage Orange or as we call them around here, hedge apple. It out lasted Grand-paw, my dad and will probably out last me since I am 72 years old. However about two inches deep in the top is starting to rot.
I’m a Mississippi gal and I love watching Andy and Megan and the kids they have are so cute and the oldest Jacob is going to be a good strong working man when he grows up
@@Melissa-pt2ikyes he is , and he has two wonderful parents that teach both of them the real meaning of life and how to work for what you earn . They neither one will be depending on someone else to feed them or have to pay someone each time they need something done .
I couldn’t hep but think of the chicken coop my husband built me 25 years ago, as you were holding yours. He put hardware cloth on one side and chicken wire on the other (including the door) He dug at ranch on the outside and extended the hardware cloth down into the ground. He ran electric wire all around. We had the water lines they peck (red) and nesting boxes. Always played a radio constantly (it was on the side of the barn). They preferred the local channel, country music, swap shop. When he was finished he said, “ A 500 lb gorilla with a Dewalt will not get in there”. 😊 he was correct. The reason for the chicken wire and hardware cloth on either sides… baby chicks would stick their heads out and bobcats would have them for an appetizer. Im telling you. It worked! We had a metal roof over from the existing structure attached to barn. He’s been gone 12 years now. Sure miss chickens, and you always bring back good memories.
Happy ThANKSGIVING to the Lawson family. suggestion on the biscuits... just pour batter into pan and cook as one piece and then cut into squares once done
💡Here's a thought, when you set your new posts for the gate, can you plant you some locust saplings in the hole next to them? That way, your replacement posts will be living trees, ready and waiting for you in 10 years from now.
The end wall will be heavy but a simple fix is support it to open it and prop it on a block to keep it from sagging. They do make swivel wheels on a heavy spring that adjust to height but they’re not cheap. Sure looks great! Chickens are gonna love it! As always…love watching your channel! I learn a lot! Thanks and Happy Thanksgiving!
Loved this video. I use bird net for fruit trees on the top of my chicken pen. We have raccoons, opossums, and hawks. I've never had them in the pen. I connect it so it doesn't fly away. Much cheaper than wire.
I have some cedars that have been in the ground for 80 years. It depends on how much heartwood is in the post. The outer layer will rot away but the heartwood a long time
Cedar last a good while but it depends on the heart the heart won’t rot but the white will rot over time.We used a lot of iron wood or burdock we called it bodock it last forever.
That’s the truth about warping. Finished ours last spring. Wow the things we had to work on by the end of the summer. Just finished the panels for the 6mil wrap for the run. It’s keeping the constant north Texas winds out.
if you had some old fashion metal icecube trays you could fill them with the lard when its hot and when it cools you would have convenient little measured cubes of lard..... just a thought
I would use hardware cloth on the sides as well as the top. The wire you are using will allow rats and mice to enter looking for food. Raccoons can break into that slide lock you used. We put the locks that you use a carabiner on. You can also put a padlock on it. Aerial predators are real and will come in through the top if left open. Perhaps look into putting a poly roof over the top to keep out rain/ snow so the run stays dry.
if you have any thompson waterseal left over from the painting of the porch you might want to paint any horizontal surfaces where rain or snow might accumulate. and we used to double up some wire and string it on the diagonal from corner on one side of a door to the other and create a Turn buckle...the lower end on the non hinge side when you tighten the turn buckle it will keep the door from sagging caused by its own weight
We've seen others on YT singe in a flame the part of the log (cedar or otherwise) that goes into the ground. That somehow offers greater protection from moisture and rotting.
Funny story... we had a coop with a slide latch like you installed here 20:02 . Apparently, we had college educated raccoons at that time cause those little suckers could open up all the latches we put on. Eventually we had to put in a 3 step latch to outsmart those little bandits. Later learned that raccoons have the same problem solving ability as a 2-3 year old human child.🦝
THAT WILL WORK , and you're right the chickens won't mind at all. Thanks for sharing with us, we enjoy watching what all you folks do around there. Stay safe and Happy Thanksgiving. Fred.
I am so amazed at how smart you guys are by making your videos the way you do I know I've set up before but it makes it so much better to go back and forth on your videos I don't know why other people don't think of it because it makes it a very interesting video and never ever boring a lot of people don't like to watch cooking videos because too much cooking at once and your cooking is always very good tasty i've always saved all the recipes that you put on your youtube channels and they are very good yummy yummy yummy for my big fat tummy😋😋😋😋😋😋😋😋😋😋😉😉😉😋😋😋😋😋😋😋😋😋😋😋😋😋😋😋😋😋😋😋😋😋😋😋😋😋😋😋😋😋😋😋😋😋😋😋😋😋😋😋😋😋😋😋😋😋😋😋😋😋😋😋😋😋😋😋😋😋😋😋😋😋😋😋😋😋😋😋😋😋😋😋😋😋😋😋😋😋😋😋🤣🤣
I am always impressed by the two of you. Your patience with one another working on projects. Your chicken run is coming along. I agree with many covering top with wire and something to keep rodents out and raccoons. Yum, your biscuits and macaroni and cheese all look good. Happy Thanksgiving Andy, Meagan, Jacob and Maggie. and everyone else on here.
Andy you are smart you know what you do I love you the kids where are they the Dog Woof Woof ❤ you know you don’t need any mouth piece you the best bonvU Tube Happy turkey day love ❤️ prayers where are the kittens 🐈⬛ their sweet Andy take a long week end you deserve it bless you all great family 🙏🏻❤️🦃🇺🇸
Meagan, that is the way i have always made my Mac and Cheese for the holidays everyone loved it i would have to make a double batch if taking it to my M.I.L. home it was always scraped clean lol. My step daughter ended up volunteering me one year for that dish at a volunteer fire department they were having a dinner to raise money here she came with a huge kettle shee just went and bought and told me i was to fix it full . I looked at her like she had two heads i said your joking then she told me what it was for so i asked when she says i will be back by noon tomorrow to get it out the door she went i could have strung her up it took 5 or 6 one pound boxes of noodles and it still didn't fill it all the way up . I'm like you not good at doubling a recipe so i did it like i know how one batch at a time and put it in that pot after the dinner she said Everyone was praising her for her Mac and Cheese she never told them she didn't do it lol. That was the one and only time i did that it was just to much of a hassle for one person and the clean up was a mess. The biscuits looked like they would melt in your mouth you are a fantastic cook your kids have a great teacher to learn them to cook real food thats good and a great teacher in their dad Andy in doing many things as well you both sure had some great teachers in your parents also the two of you were sure made for each other anyone can see that you have a solid, loving, sharing marriage that will withstand any storm that comes that is a great example for your wonderful children and so many of us. Thank you for sharing your life and lifestyle with us it is greatly appreciated. 🦃🙏🏼 HAPPY THANKSGIVING 🙏🏼🦃 HAVE A WONDERFUL TIME WITH ALL YOUR FAMILY 🙏🏼🦃
The chickens need some shade... you might consider putting a roof of some type over part of the run and screening in the rest against the critters... just sayin... Happy Thanksgiving!
Your corner to corner brace on your chicken coup is backwards…the high corner needs to be on the end without the hinges. This way, the weight of the door pushes against the frame, instead of pulling and putting more stress on the hinge end. Nice coop, though.
When I’m doing something like that I always am thinking of critters trying to get in. And I always burn my wood and alligator it before I put it in the ground.😊
Question...just a thought, if your going to let chickens in it during the winter and come spring, I would plastic it up and do a in ground garden green house. Just to see how it grows.
Andy your chicken run is going to work great. You can get in the end and clean it out with your Kubota as well as roll the chicken tractor in and out. Meagan I think your biscuits look like a million dollars and I bet they taste like 2 million dollars. All they need is some gravy, preserves or sorghum to go with them. I hope y'all have a wonderful Thanksgiving!
Andy yall shore got that chicken coop coming along now and maggan them biscuits look real good and that machine an cheese did to yall folks have a wonderful Thanksgiving see yall next time

Megan and Andy, we love your channel! Question for Megan. How do you keep your cookie sheets so immaculately clean? They look brand new! Love you Guys, keep fighting the good fight, your awesome!
Take some tar n brush on the end of whatever end of the wood y'all are putting in the ground. It helps preserve the wood👍😉brush it on n let it dry first
Put wire over top of coop too! Prevent hawks, other flying predators from swooping in to grab chickens!

Happy Thanksgiving! May God bless all those gathered around your table!
I am overly cautious, so I would most definitely put wire across the top. 🥴😵💫 Hope ya’ll have a wonderful Thanksgiving! Enjoy! 🦃🍷
The more red the Cedar, the better. The red is rot resistant. The white in the Cedar is what's rotting.
I always cut the top of the fence post at a slant to shed water instead of soaking down into the post
Happy ThANKSGIVING to the Lawson family. suggestion on the biscuits... just pour batter into pan and cook as one piece and then cut into squares once done

Clamps for Andy would be a good Christmas gift. He wouldn’t be too cheap to accept a great gift would he. lol. Love to you and Happy Thanksgiving.
May you have a Blessed Thanksgiving. Thinking of you as it is the first Thanksgiving since your father went to heaven.

Paint the bottom of your cedar post with 50:50 mix of diesel fuel, and use motor oil. They will last 25 years or more.

I wish y’all’s family a very happy Thanksgiving!(Jay from Mississippi ).
It's mostly the white of the red cedar that rots.
By the way good morning from Northeast Texas, hope y'all have a Happy Thanksgiving!!!
