I feel as though I can push the light a little more, time will tell.

When I lived in the Lake Tahoe, CA area, years ago, I did many snow scenes, plein air, in the actual snow!! Folks, that's the Real "secret to painting winter/snow". ;D. Now I'm in Arizona and not many chances for that, but still some, up in the northern part of the state in winter. It seems a fraud to do a snow scene in the studio, for many reasons. Mainly, working from a photo is never the same as being there and feeling the moment (but you can use those field sketches in the studio as refence for better paintings on a larger scale). And, working on site shows in your work, cuz you have to work fast and loosen up, to get it completed. And the colors, OMG, the gorgeous colors to be seen in winter scenes, but only outdoors. Also, it's impressive to others/clients when they find out that you did paint in the snow. They were usually pretty small, mind you, no more that 11x14, 12x16, that so you can finish without getting frost bitten, or something. LOL. "You did that painting in the snow!?" "Yup", "How cold was it?", "Not bad, pretty nice actually, low 20's (F) I think it was that day". LOL ;D.
Messing with you, Colley, but try it in the snow, if you have not all ready, I know it's tougher down there, but you will find snow is not just white and pale blue or violet, but it's every other color too, reflecting off of all other things in the landscape!! That's why you can spot studio painted snow scenes, done from photo references, a hundred feet away, in a gallery!! They all miss that vital color nuance.
Cheers from sunny southern Arizona; not much snow here in June, just lots of cactus and many rattle snakes!! Both will bite much worse than the frost, BTW. : )

Colley, I have only recently discovered your channel on UA-cam, and am loving these vids, as much as I have enjoyed your book, “Creating Impressionist Landscapes in Oil” which I have had for a long time. I find your voice very soothing, and like the style of narration after the painting is done.
Would enjoy knowing your basic palette and more color mixing for shadows, etc.

Love your paintings Colley! How long does it take you to typically complete these paintings? You seem to be able to paint over your prior work without muddying the image. Is this technique or time or both?
    Cheers from Canada!

As an oil painter, I find that it’s a little bit of both. Working with thin layers, as he said he does, is very helpful. Plus, putting down the light to dark colors is good.

I'm hoping that you don't think that I was suggesting that you did. I simply was asserting that one cannot nor need not avoid everything dangerous in life and that taking reasonable precautions in the face of potentially hazardous condition is the prudent thing to do.

No that’s okay, when I’m travelling I rarely get the chance to paint for myself. I absolutely love the cold, it’s more of a lack of time thing.
