I just checked this again today because of various reviews of the Met's Rigoletto -- wanted to see if I think he would interpret the Duke with more depth than people seem to think is necessary. He's not just a bad guy like some kind of horrid robot; it makes more sense to show there's a suffering heart and soul under all the nasty behaviour. And yes, Michael could do that just fine. Nice to know.

Very nice performance, he knows very well how to avoid coloraturas and Acuds, instead of JDF, who shows his miracular Acuds and coloraturas where ever he can do so. But Spyres will get it! We need good tenors, there is a great lack of them and they are critizised by anybody who doesn't know how to sing at all

Bravo. Recitativo e l' aria "parmi veder le lagrime" ,quasi impeccabili. Un po' riservato nella cabaletta. Ha cantato con angoscia, ma abbastanza bene. "Ella mi fu rapita" è un vero "tour-de-force" in tre parti ,per ogni tenore.

RAI just broadcast GUILLAUME TELL from Torino and Spyers sang an excellent Arnolde. His voice sounded even better as the microphone was a little further out and you heard his color better.

I just heard this with orchestra at a gala in Paris, He is starting to force and sings everything Jonas Kaufmann style - mezzo forte-forte (but with a nicer sound). He is going to have a shortened career if he continues. His technique needs cleaning up

Quale sarebbe il carattere verdiano? Secondo me c'è un equivoco in questo. Per me il carattere verdiano dovrebbe essere, prima di tutto, cantare bene (come fa Spyres)...
Con orchestra viene decisamente meglio!
@@MrPren in realtà stupenda voce e timbro ma non è adatto per il repertorio verdiano, poiché richiede un timbro e uno squillo dal peso particolare, come il baritono appunto "verdiano" , verdi non è per tutte le voci, come non lo è Rossini, come non lo è Puccini, come non lo è Mozart. Io credo che prima di far fare di tutto e di più a questi cantanti, che meritano di identificarsi in un tipo di repertorio ben preciso, i manager o chi organizza deve valutare bene, perché se si nota Spyres ( spero di aver scritto bene) non interpreta quest'aria come farebbe con il suo vero repertorio. Purtroppo è una stupenda voce, magnifica particolare e dotata di un estensione notevole dagli acuti ai bassi cavernosi, che non centra niente con questo tipo di repertorio, ma in tutto ciò grande artista.
Simpatico cantante, dalle mie parti si usa dire, non è ne carne ne pesce.
Mi sembra il miglior tenore del momento. Si può notare qualche piccola incertezza ma nessuno canta così adesso.

Bellissimo timbro e squillo, ma è certo che questa scena (aria) non è per il suo tipo di tecnica , che mi sembra più adatta ad un repertorio che al massimo può spingersi al primo romanticismo (Bellini, Donizetti) e soprattutto per Rossini. Il Verdi maturo del Rigoletto, richiede un "stacco" e un'incisività e un peso vocale (soprattutto nella cabaletta in questo caso) che non gli si addicono, che stridono con la sua impostazione tecnica e timbrica. Però , consideriamo che questo è un concerto nell'ambito del rossini festival, per cui tutto è un pò "interpretato" " à la Rossini" ...e ci stà. ...Avercene di bravi tenori così.
Non ne capisco niente, ma sarebbe un ottimo Pollione secondo me, sbaglio?

Definitely one of the better tenors of the new crop. Too bad the piano sounds so ineffectual to describe the pathos of the aria.

TIGHTNESS, TENSION, HARSHNESS in the larynx when producing sounds. The opposite of relaxation and ease.
There is no freedom in this sound! None whatsoever! The vibrato is constricted as fuck. Why though? Whyyy?? Well cause he is singing as high as a tenor in a falsetto nasal voice. Not in full voice as it is required for this music. Spyres is a baritone singing the tenor repertoire in falsetto.

@@JackV2023 He's a baryton (with a beautiful rich and velvety baryton voice) who has chosen to only use his head voice. Also he is very nasal. That is just a anatomical fact.
