The Thule Motion XT is a very popular roof-mounted cargo box. And a lot of the reviews are saying, you get what you pay for. This is a very premium box. So they say it's really easy to use. It's very sleek, which I think it is. And it's also going to be nice and quiet and safe for all your gear up on top.
So that's what we're really gonna do here. We're gonna start from the very beginning, out of the box. Take it out, set it up, and go and try to answer all of those questions to see if the reviews are actually accurate. Before we even get the box out of the box, we want to set up our roof rack to make sure it's going to fit. I'm using a factory roof rack.
If you have an aftermarket roof rack, it's still gonna fit. You just wanna measure and make sure that the width of your crossbars are gonna be no larger than three and a half inches. And then the height is gonna be no larger than one and 11/16 inches. You're not gonna have any issues with any type of roof rack, but if you do have some sort of ladder rack you might wanna triple check those dimensions for your truck. Now let's free the box.
Whenever I open these up I'm always looking at the packaging. There's plenty of pads and stuff. So we'll throw all this to the side, cut the box open and unwrap it. I am pretty impressed with the amount of wrap that's on here. That's good.
So, you know, it's not gonna be damaged right out of the box. We have another protective film on the top. If you want to keep this on until it's completely loaded up, you can do that, just to prevent any scratches from happening. It's very satisfying doing this and look how shiny it is. Gloss finish. Which looks great. It's about 46 pounds. I can do it on my own, but you may want to get somebody to help you if you don't really wanna lift all this and put it up on your roof. And it all just depends on what vehicle you're putting it onto. Mine's a little taller, so it's a little more difficult than just like your standard sedan or your RAV4. We get two keys with our kit. Go ahead and unlock it. When it's unlocked, the key does not come out. It has a very easy, very easy way to open it. You squeeze that together. Do like the fact that they put this in here, this to make sure that it doesn't cave in. So you can toss that. And then all of our mounting hardware is gonna be on inside kind of strapped in. And we can unpack this so we can get it all locked down. In that bag, we're gonna get four clamps and three straps for our cargo and we'll find another strap over here for something else. So what we're gonna do with these is as we tighten these and we loosen them it goes out and then as we tighten it, it comes in. There's gonna be slots right here. And you notice how we have clips here and here. So that's gonna go in there, make sure the bar is exactly where we want it click it into place, spin it and wait for the click. That's gonna be your torque setting. And we can do the same for the remaining three. We can open from both sides. It's kind of hard to get to the other side to mount the other side. So I'm gonna close this all the way and open it from that side to do the rest. The channel is pretty wide. So we might have to slide this down like this. The center parts would be right above our crossbar. Snap, snap, twist, and click. Everyone saying that the Thule Motion XT is extremely easy to install onto your roof. I just confirmed that, out of the box, set up onto our roof in under five minutes. They say that the Thule box is very spacious. Spacious can mean a lot of things to a lot of different people, but here's some dimensions to see if it's gonna be enough space for you. The overall length is gonna be about 79 inches. The whole entire interior width is gonna be 31 and a half inches. And then the overall height at its tallest point in the middle here is gonna be 15 inches. You can use the included straps to loop through these little holes here. I go with the open side and then come down here. I do this first, before I put anything in and to keep the cam part of our strap out of the way, I usually just take it and kind of just loop it around this little piece here. This is usually what you do when you have like skis and stuff, because it's kind of rigid and it's gonna start sliding. It's gonna be annoying to hear, but also if you have some of the hard case suitcas
Thanks a lot! I was in doubt about the options I had, but I am sold to this one after your review. Cheers from Romania!
You're welcome! Greetings from Wentzville, Missouri!

Wondering if they will fit Yakima HD roof rack, been trying to find the dimensions that I'll allow it
The Thule Motion roof cargo box will fit crossbars up to 3-1/2 inches wide by 1-11/16 inches tall. Since the Yakima HD crossbars are smaller than that at 3 inches wide and 1-1/2 inches tall, the box and crossbars will work together just fine.

First!! Great review, thank you.
Thule motion vs Yakima cbx beta for rain/snow?
I want to keep things dry thx.
Both boxes would do a good job keeping your cargo dry, but they aren't waterproof. If you encounter a hard, driving rain while running at highway speeds, some moisture WILL work its way into any cargo box. This is why we recommend that anything that can't get wet be wrapped in plastic.
What size is this one? Is it heavy?
The Thule Motion XT cargo box, part # TH629806 offers an 18 cubic foot interior capacity. The box has outside dimensions of 84-1/2" long x 36" wide x 17" tall. The box weighs in at 46 lbs. We wouldn't consider it particularly heavy, but it might be awkward for one person to handle.

@@etrailer thanks for your prompt response. Seems like you got the XL. I just placed an order for it. Hope it will work out well for our upcoming trip. Your video was quite helpful. Thanks again!
You're very welcome, we appreciate your business!
Is this the L or XL or XXL?
It's the XL. For the XXL, use # TH629906.

@etrailer wow!!!! Was not expecting super fast reply! I ordered the XT L for my 2022 Toyota Corolla, do you think that's a good fit? I really wanted the XL but I believe it would be too big...
As long as your crossbars can be installed so that they measure between 23-5/8 and 36-7/8 inches apart measured center to center, it'll fit your Corolla. Hope that helps!
