I've done this where I borrowed (1) against a credit card to dump into a stock, (2) put money into a company that was a fraud...and, of course, (3) put everything into a single stock, which was not a fraud but the market just killed it. I can tell you that THIS is not ok for 99.99% of the people. It's a gamble, in which you win due to, mostly, luck, and some skill. In my case, (1) my credit card borrowing (during the 2007-10 time) actually paid off really well - I was buying battered companies; made a ton. My (2) fraud company buy was a company that looked amazing on paper and a friend recommended it...I didn't understand the investment that well. I had to sell all my shares for $1 (that's how to take off a 99.9% loss off your account). And, my biggest failure of all (3) was an Oil and Gas company, which got caught up in commodity pricing wars - and I had rode that thing up where my account was once worth around 450K or so...and I had 2X margined that ....so, total position was around 900k (approx). I lose all but 40k in that stock. Margin kills you and it can kill you fast. As you get more and more money this way, you end up taking more and more risk. HERE IS MY RECOMMENDATION FOR THE 99.99% OF YOU (do your own research) - BUY and HOLD low fee market index funds like the SP500 for a very long time, buy monthly, keep buying, never panic sell. I know it's "boring" but it works.
After I lost everything, I went numb for a few months and then got up and took a look at my situation. I sold a house that I had bought in 2009 (luckily) and I used the proceeds (270k) to buy into the SP500. I asked for raises at my job, for better titles...and I invested heavily into SP500. Today, collectively, that account is over a million. The account hit a million within 5 years. And my net worth is a bit north of 1.7M - I know it's not much compared to these guys; but it's something and at least I can sleep at night and I know that I will make it almost for sure. So, now, my job is to try to generate more and more cash to shove into the SP500. It works; but yes, you are not going to get multi millions like these guys. We don't know what the future holds for risk takers - we just don't.

I definitely agree with alot of what you say!
I am big into index funds and automatic investments each week. just starting with real estate. Just started with individual stocks in September and up about 6k so far give or take 2k daily based on market fluctuations. Investing steady in 401k and roth ira index funds with company match.
Taking some risks with individual stocks is exciting because of the possibilities but I don't invest with debt and I never invest more than I can afford to lose.
It gives me a chance at building wealth quickly in addition to my slow and steady long term index fund investing.

@@thebestthingthatneverhappe6729 yup I took about 10% of my portfolio and bought a bunch of battered stocks in 2020. My indexes have scaled enough that each 1% gives me about 10k. So, it’s pretty crazy to see it move so rapidly nowadays. Indexes work.

@@dommafia hah! I got Netflix for entertainment. But I do have some trading happening. My indexes return about 10k every 1% move up. In 20 years, it’ll be 40k-70k per 1%. To me, that’s pretty exciting. But yes, it’s definitely not DUMB MONEY exciting.

Lol I relate to so many of the things being discussed here. Especially resonant was the "buying a bunch of something as a place holder" strategy. It's just the way my brain works. I have to buy something to start caring about what it is, and once I do that I'm more motivated to do more research quickly.

Nope do not do Margin. I took my $770K from 2019 and turned it into $13.5M with no use of margin. I also did it with minimal risk. I took it all and bought way out of the money LEAPS on TSLA. I am still invested 99% in way OTM LEAPS on TSLA. This is my plan for at least 5 years. Rolling them forward prior to expiration. Oh yes and early in 2019 I converted all my IRA to ROTH IRA and paid off the IRS. So all that $13.5M is in a ROTH IRA. I am not a financial guru. Just a 60 year old retired engineer. But as you say you have to be prepared to lose. I was ready to lose it all. Glad I gained. I also spent $100K on some toys and built a couple churches in my village in Mexico. My best advice is pray for wisdom and have faith in God. I did and I do.

I want to 4x my portfolio to two million that way i can stop working my low-paid jobb invest full time and work for charitys half time and honestly have fun investing insted of having this stress of finding investments while spending 13-16hours at work it is such a multi tasking..
I would have made so much more money this year if i did not have to earn money on work.
Just to lett ppl know, just looking at fundementals and predicting the future of a company can make you money, you don't have to refresh the news feed untill something hitts. Just have more information then the normal investor; i don't think wall streat had any idea what company was growing there online revenues during 2020..so easy money.

It's hard for someone like me to critique Chris. His goal of accelerating wealth is great and everything but I don't think he's had a big enough loss on this run to truly appreciate the law of the drawdown. After all, if you lose 50% of your net worth then you have to make 100% just to break even. So with such a large account already, taking on outsized risk is a detriment to multiplying his account. Unless he takes proper risk minimization precautions after he places those trades, which he is probably doing. Risk is good but I would think I would start toning it down at the $10M mark! I am sure he knows what he is doing, I'm just making a comment from where I see it.

I don't understand why someone as aggressive as Chris doesn't just use index futures as his primary form of leverage. With futures you get 10x leverage on invested capital on an index and you don't pay interest on that margin. I would never pay these crazy 5% to 8% annualized interest rates to buy more stock when you can get 5x more leverage and no interest costs in the futures market.
With 10x leverage if you are able to cumulatively capture a net 10% move in an index (up or down) over the course of a year you will double your invested capital.
I don't know about other people but I am much more confident in my ability to interpret the technicals on an index well enough to cumulatively capture 10% in a year and double my money, than I am in my ability to pick a few needle in the haystack type individual stocks that happen to double in a given year. 2020 has been a unique year because of Covid19, but normally you don't see as many large cap stock doubling at any point inside a calendar year as we have this year.

    • @DumbMoneyLive

I generally trade individual equities on leverage so those index futures don’t work for me. For example, I’m heavy levered in amazon this week which is not trading in sync with any index. Also, my margin borrowing rate is roughly 2%, so not crazy bad. I do agree 2020 is a crazy anomaly abs don’t expect these massive moves going forward

    • @GregTGolden
      @GregTGolden 3 роки тому

There is no "right way" of using margin. Its just what youre comfortable with and you can still sleep at night.
Know your downside risk of loss and be prepared for a margin call. Just leave some wiggle room for prices to drop a little and know ahead of time what you will sell if you get a margin call. Margin call isnt the end of the world. If you think about it you are invested 2 to 1 if you are at 50% margin....if you dont think prices are going up you shouldnt be invested at all. If you think prices go higher then why not borrow to get 2x the gains??
Margin makes sense if you have a STRONG bullish view. Thats about it. If you think the market will go sideways or down not worth using it.

@@RichardLalonde I don’t double my money in three months, ever.
We have very different styles of investing.
I buy a few companies every year that are far above average quality and growing companies, and try to buy them at really appealing valuations. This year, thanks to the pandemic I have made around 50%, normally I make 20-30% a year.
Your companies may double but I could never sleep at night holding those companies. Your not buying those stocks because you believe in the companies are you? Ur just making a calculated trade I assume? Those companies are not very good I think you would agree for holding over a three to five year period which is what I do. I think u said u owned a cinema company for example. I could never trade I guess. It’s hard.
With my style of investing I just buy and then sit back and wait and let the money seep in slowly.
For example I bought companies near their March lows like FDX and FB. However I also bought financials which so far this year I am up more like just 50%. Although the difference being financials are still extremely undervalued. Financials like SBNY and OZK.
Do you mind me asking how long you have been investing for? Your account sounded very small ( no offence we all start somewhere) but perhaps you have recently started or perhaps you have made large losses too??Trading can be risky-have you madeany big losses before? I am just curious.

Therefore, I decided to invest in it and try to succeed in the field of online trading. Soon, I realized that the software was eating up all my investment. The broker is nothing but a dangerous and fraudulent platform. I invested more than 140,000 U.S. dollars and could not withdraw my funds. A few months passed and I still got nothing. So, I reached out to help me recover the funds, I have been able to recover $100,000, and the remaining $40,000 is still in progress. I really don't know how happy I am. Saying "I'm not going to risk 10% of my 10 dollars, that would be crazy" and turning around and saying "well you know what, I am willing to risk 100% of 1 dollar" is just a dumb way to convince yourself into over leveraging.

@@user-bm8kl3dd4c I know you're asking the other guy but let me jump in here. He is probably talking about trading profits; which is fine, if it works for him. It seems to work for 'Dumb Money' gang (the 3 guys in these videos). Keep in mind though, that it usually doesn't work for everyone. In fact, most people lose money doing margin trading. But, I would like to give you one way where you can make a lot of money per month and it's resilient/long term generational wealth. It's a 3 prong approach. 1) a great good paying job 2) a portfolio based on low fee index funds 3) a real estate portfolio - If you can work these 3 things in parallel in your life; you can create amazing wealth. I've done all 3 but not at a super high level. I was able to go from nearly 0 to 1.7M now in about 10/12 years. I. know it's not a lot like the 'Dumb Money' guys, but it's something. When the stock market goes up 1%, I get about 10k; in 20 years, that'll be 40-70k per 1%up. My job also helps...I started with $3.25 an hour and in my last job got $90/hr (includes benefits)...I'm right now negotiating $105/hr with a new job. My real estate game is weaker as I only have bought two houses, one was sold for 200k above cost...and the other I still own that has grown to 600k higher than cost. I plan to expand my real estate portfolio in coming years to include rental units. So, maybe this helps, maybe it doesn't but there is a way for you to get there slow/steady/safely rather than 4Xmargin trading or something. I'm here if you have any questions. Sorry if I went on too long. Didn't wanna leave ya hangin

@@AmanBansil What you’re doing or did is very logical, I’m young and retarted, I’ve been working since I’m 15 and I’m 20 now, and i want to 1.7M but way quicker, because I don’t think i wanna work my entire life, the main reason i wanna be rich is so i can experience life not have to work all the time. I need passive income somehow
