I find that retro/vintage stores tend to carry more skirts and dresses that are more modest. They tend to carry things inspired by the 1950’s so they have higher necklines and longer hems. However, the clothes usually are brightly colored or have busy patterns so not the most versatile at times. My ideal aesthetic is funky librarian so it’s perfect for me.

Another Canadian here! One thing about winter is the freshly fallen snow making everything look so clean reminds me of the bible verse where it talks about our sins being as Scarlett but with God they become white as snow! Isaiah 1:18. Thanks for the encouragement in dressing modestly!

Loved this video. I’m a Independent Baptist Pastorswife and wear dresses and skirts all the time. Thanks for all the awesome fashion ideas. I just shared this in our ladies messenger chat. I have an entire drawer of leggings long and Capri length. I live in them all winter. When people ask me how do you wear dresses and skirts when it’s so cold I tell them with leggings under your clothes it’s actually warmer than just a pair of pants. I love your channel even though I have a kids close to your age your content is always encouraging and spot on. Would love to see another fashion / style video in the spring if possible. Take Care 💙Cheryl

Yes, I actually find the leggings are a LIFESAVER in the winter and it's way warmer to do a skirt and leggings than just pants. I am part of a homeschool mom hiking club and we meet even in the winter here in MN--and some of the moms have invested in some amazing outdoor fabric skirts they put on over leggings or thermal pants, and they hike even in the winter in skirts here. REI used to sell them, but now you have to order the skirts from a Scandinavian company. But they all swear it's warmer than hiking in just winter pants! I'm hoping to get one next winter.

Great video. S.O.S. is a good title. Someone remarked today that a person's appearance is important because it shows when you respect yourself and others to make an effort to be clean and neat or put together when the occasion calls for it. It's like fashion hygiene.
You do a great job of showing how to be mindful without being vain.

I like shopping from Bates Sisters Boutique online, as long as you measure yourself and find your size in the chart it works well! Some things they have are more modest than others. Especially if you’re tall like me, it’s good to check on the length of the dresses in the size chart.

I like adding jumpers over clothes that fit and flare. I wear leggings and long sleeve with a tank top underneath. I can add a sweater if it’s really cold. One tip would be wool items to stay warm. I also think about the fact that most women wore skirts and dresses all of history and stayed warm.

We moved from Northeastern Pa to Vermont and things that have really helped me are to wear heavyweight socks all winter (bombas, darn tough brands are great) and also a hat… and gloves…I have a selection of hats I like…I always keep a thinner beanie type hat in my purse for quick outdoor emergencies…such as running into a store pumping gas etc …I truly dislike bitter cold weather but when dressed properly , winter days are so beautiful and refreshing…thanks for your sweet videos, Megan!

Another clothing company to check into is EShakti. It is a company that will customize whatever item of clothing you choose. They have tons of dresses!!!
A tip for helping to reduce the bulk of your winter cost is to look for a coat with a cut that nips in at the waist or even has a tie. I always feel less bulky with a belt on my coat.

Winter fashion is a big struggle here in Minnesota, too. We recently had -57 weather for a couple days. It does reach a certain point where you are dressing for survival rather than fashion, and you just have to embrace it--staying warm & safe is the goal, not looking cute! In order to go out at all, you just DO have to have so many layers you look frumpy.
That, or you hunker down and stay inside til the worst windchill passes, and honestly when we're all doing that, we're not seeing each other anyway, so who cares if we stay in our nice warm fleece pajamas by the fire all day? :D
I definitely love my fleece-lined leggings, and long tunics + fleece leggings are one of my indoor outfit formulas for the winter. Add a cardigan and warm scarf over that, and a winter coat for leaving the house, and it works most of the time. Keep in mind a lot of winter layering is for getting from point A to point B as well--you're not necessarily keeping ALL the layers on the whole day. Maybe you have a great outfit on under your coat and sweater and scarf, and you get down to that once you are at a gathering with friends or something. Or, if you're out sledding or skiing with the kids, you just wear practical snow stuff and change back into something nice when you're back inside and ready to get out of it and hang the wet stuff to dry. We just embrace changing more in the winter!

for me, in order to wear skirts in the winter I either will wear a cropped jacket (hits right at my waist to keep me from looking like a lump) or a really long coat with a belt. also, investing in wool coats has been a game-changer for me. they can be just as warm as a puffy jacket, and if you size up you can stuff a sweater underneath. plus, they add really nice structure to your outfit if they have shoulder pads!

Girl! You have GOT to stop it with the comments about being 30 and how sad, depressing, etc. it it is to be so old, or however you've been phrasing it, lol! And not just because I'm 31, either! 😂 You're only as old as you feel😉 I remember my sister-in-law (older brother's wife) talking about being "too old" to dress the way she did back when she had 3 kids and was only 25. I totally rolled my eyes at her (in a light-hearted, sister-ly way) and told her that that was silly. The clothes she was referring to was just jeans and Tshirts and oversized hoodies. She felt like she had to start dressing like our grandmothers with their old lady prints and flowy, frumpy blouses. My standards are...as long as you aren't dressing risque (which I don't condone at any age, but I'm also not other womens' boss, so...🤷‍♀️), then wear what makes you feel like you! Never feel like you're too old to be allowed to look your best and feel good about the way you present yourself❤

Would you consider doing a video like this but for dressing little girls modestly. I know the shorts under dresses in summer hack but recently one of my daughters has moved from toddler to little girls sizes and I was horrified at the crop tops and super short skirts, not to mention the words and pictures on some of the t-shirts.. I want her to be able to play outside and move around like a normal kid but still be covered and look cute and girly. I found last summer she had a hard time with the dresses when she was at the playground and being a typical farm kid. She likes to follow her older brother! 😬 The way you dress Evonnie is always so sweet. I need tips! ❤️

Yes, canucks= coats, we like to survive the winter. Look to the eastern Europeans for classy winter wear. A warm and long fitted coat, with a high hood and good pocket placement to eliminate all the bulky layers. That being said, in this spring-winter weather, mindful layering is key.

  • @gratituderanch9406

I’m only in Washington state, but yes we need coats! When I’m outside king owls (I grow most of our food- even in the winter we harvest) I wear a merino wool tank, a wool T and/or wool long sleeve, then a knitted sweater and coat. A hat and for the bottom- wool tights, leggings then a petticoat and skirt will keep you so warm and make sure the bottom layers are quite fitted and tight do you don’t look poofy.
Dresses are so much warmer than pants! And if you’re super cold you can always add more underskirts! Different materials slip rather than stick together. Under skirts also prevent your skirts from getting tangled between your legs…
Static comes from plastic cloths. Like polyester. Try natural fibers like wool.

The best thing about living in Illinois are my friends. A lot of people are moving to AZ, FL or TN. So in the end the cold weather doesnt affect us.

I second the “Do you really need the coat?”
I lived in Denver for 2 years and upstate NY for 18 months and honestly, I only wore a coat about 50% of the time in the winter. If I’m only walking in & out of a store, I really don’t need a coat… even if it’s 25°. I won’t freeze in the 30 seconds I’m outside😄 And I really don’t like to wear a coat if I’ll be walking around a store for a while (because I HATE carrying my coat around). But if I’m grocery shopping and I’m going to be loading groceries into my car for 5 minutes, then I definitely want one. It just depends. But I agree! You don’t always need one!

I love sweater dresses and fleece lined tights and a fluffy scarf 💕 favourite winter activity- definitely maple syrup festival with my family - my kids love it - there are games and sleigh rides and free pancakes with the fresh maple syrup! God bless you 🙏☺️💕

I'm in Minnesota.and yes a big puffy jacket is necessary for me, I hate being cold. My husband and I would like to move farther south but the kids won't have it. I do love the way the trees look after a big snow fall though. They are beautiful. My biggest struggle with clothes in winter is that our house has old windows and gets really cold. I can wear a cute outfit if I'm going somewhere but if I'm at home I just need sweatpants and sweatshirts to stay warm.

Any tips for wearing leggings and skirts together so that the skirt isn't clinging to the leggings and "walking" up my legs? It's not static just the fabrics grabbing each other. My daughter and I both have this problem and hate how it feels and looks!

I've never lived in a cold climate so my body has no idea how to acclimate to anything below 60 degrees 😆When I go out in the winter time with a dress, coat, and leggings my upper-half stays warm while my legs feel like ice. What kind of leggings do you wear? Do you double up on them? I have so much respect for anyone who can survive in a freezing (or below freezing) climate. And BONUS points for looking pretty whilst doing it ☺

Here in Canada (Great Lakes region) where I live if I wore my hat (or ear muffs) like that then defeats the purpose so I don't even bother wearing either unless it's so cold then it covers the forehead and who cares it's a matter of staying warm. I'm in an area that we get both super cold with super damp bone chilling cold and then have days in the 50s (10°C=50°F) so it all depends on how the weather is going at the time. I've got grey fleece lined leggings to keep the legs warm under whether it's a sweater dress, reg dress or skirt. Thin thermal layers that help to keep warm without adding tons of bulk and making you sweaty work best. I try to keep things minimal so stick with a few longer sleeve neutral coloured shirts to layer under do they go with anything and then can add colour with accessories or the sweater that I have on. As for the dark leggings with lighter oatmeal sweater dress if you go by the rule of thirds then there is no problem with the contrast in the leggings and shows you've got legs and still covers you with the top 2/3 as the dress. It's one thing that I learned that really works as a short girl to do without appearing larger and cutting you off in the wrong area

I live in the south, though it does still snow here and get down in the teens in the winter time. I’m actually jealous of you all up north! I would prefer the cold over it being blazing hot. There are only so many layers you can take off, you know? Lol. I look forward to winter every year. I find it much easier to dress modestly and still look cute in layered outfits than I do in summer outfits.

Hi Megan, I have a question from a faith based perspective. Where is the line between caring about outfits and appearance so you look respectful and put together and all that and then caring too much where it becomes vain? It’s something I’ve struggled with lately. I always wonder if im putting in too much effort or not enough. 🤔

Dresses end up having a smoother look, than midi skirts & sweaters. Tights are more slimming than leggings. Fitted winter underwear is your friend, more than leggings, if you want a streamlined look. Hats, scarves, vests, gloves/fingerless gloves, & warm socks are easy add-ons that do not contribute to a bulky look. Though I totally understand the midi skirt, leggings, and sweaters being the more practical choice for warmth.❤️😉❤️

The best way to avoid looking like a tent.....Move to Arizona where the average temperature in the winter is in the 70s. All you need is a few long sleeve shirts and a light jacket.

I like living in a colder area because I strongly dislike bugs. I can't imagine living in an area where bugs are as big as my hand! What I would enjoy about a warm area... not having to always pack a sweater/coat of some sort. I live in Canada and even in the summer I have a stash of sweaters and sometimes mittens in the back of the car for myself and the little ones.

I live in Montana and it's very cold! It's been below freezing for about 10 weeks, save for a handful of days. I, too, hate the bulk of a coat, purse, and diaper bag. So I rarely wear a coat! If I'm only heading from my house to the car and the car to the store, then why do I need to bundle up? It's not like people are hanging out outdoor for more than a couple minutes anyway. Unless it's below 10 degrees, I just wear a sweater and a beanie and ALWAYS boots. So I never have the gross bulk feeling. Problem solved!
Obviously, when it is -42, I have ALL the clothing on ha ha. But outside of the extremes, it's ok to not bundle up a ton.

Thing is that, in Canada I have to wear not only leggings under my sweatpants but even that’s too cold…I sometimes wear two sweatpants! That’s why I want to wear a long skirt over the sweatpants cus I think that would be even warmer! I am very skinny so I get veryyyy cold. At least in summer we don’t even turn on the AC even when it’s 28Celsius 😂

great tips and tricks! I love the thought of starting with a basic black outfit and going from there! Did you need to size up on that Lexis Jean black skirt? I noticed when I clicked the link it suggested I get a size 14 and I typically wear an 8. So I was just curious on your opinion of that before I bought one. I've been on the hunt for another black skirt
