    Mexico banned slavery right after independence, one of the reasons why immigrants from the US revolted, declared Texas independent and went to join the USA was because they weren't allowed to own slaves, and Mexican authorities weren't willing to go after escaped slaves, who according to Mexican law, were free at the moment they set foot in Mexican territory.

    7:35 Petty linguist tangent: The janky etymology of "slav"="slave" is a huge pet peeve for me. A lot of people, some in writing, very readily jump to the conclusion that, since Medieval (!) Latin "sclavus" = "slave", and "slave" pretty much looks like "slav", that's where it must come from. It's a little like inferring that, since the Russian word for slave is "rab", it must derive from "arab" or v.v. (it doesn't).
    What these claims tend to ignore is that the slavs call themselves slavs (slavjane/slavjanski in modern Russian; maybe people who speak other slavics can confirm) and, side note, have done so since before Islam even came into being (re: "enslaved by muslims", 400-ish AD vs. 600-ish AD). Thanks to slavistic research, then, there are mainly two theories that are considered plausible. One is that the name derives from the word "slava" = "glory". After all, who would name their child Stanislav if it meant "became slave" rather than "became/achieved glory"?
    Another, which is commonly considered most likely nowadays, is that it derives from "slovo" = "word", as in "people who speak the same language" (which I personally like also because the word for German(s) in the majority of Slavic languages, to this day, essentially means "can't speak" - which I find adorably insulting). This also falls in line with ancient ethnogroups’ tendency to simply call themselves stuff like "people/humans/people of ___/people who ___". Either way, if you go even further back, slava and slovo are commonly assumed to derive from the same proto-Slavic root, anyway. There are several other theories considered less plausible/not supported by (as) much evidence. So at the very least, the exact origins are debated and there will probably never be a definitive truth because making definitive statements about (most) ancient languages is... hard. A lot of early writing on the Slavs by scholars of many origins is also simply very yikes-y.
    Now granted, the video doesn't claim "Slavs are called Slavs because they were slaves", but rather "Slaves are called slaves because the Slavs were enslaved a lot" - which at least puts it in a chronological order that's actually possible. That might even be true according to the most commonly accepted theory (though it simplifies multiple steps), but the (implied) framing here is off. This was much more likely a misunderstanding than cruelty; the Byzantine Greeks (not an expert on religion, but not too many Muslims there, I think; PragerU anti-Islam bonus!) did not get that the Slavs were referring to themselves by an autonym and therefore started using the word "slav" as a term for unfree people rather than as a name. And you know what? That theory is not uncontested, either! What is definite is that none of this is as easy as "Mean brown man make white man slave first".
    You can find all of this out by reading English Wikipedia for about 10 minutes, btw. If you also read Russian, it should become clear very quickly how not at all clear any of this is, simply because it all happened a very long time ago and old records are incomplete and usually biased. We are lucky the Romans and Greeks were so collectively Type A that they wrote everything down - at least from their point of view. What this does show is what we already know, namely that PragerU use self-serving and reductive framing to slip in implications and points that support anti-OTHER views wherever possible and twist facts to serve agendas. It's shitty research at best, propaganda in the guise of education at worst. And all that to (sloppily) prove a point nobody contested…

      I always thought the word slave came in my language through the vikings, who were active here and known to enslave slavic people in Russia too. I'm from the Netherlands btw.
      But it might also come from English and international trade that came up in the 16th century, and the English learned the word slave from the vikings.
      This is because the word 'knecht' is sometimes used interchangeably for slave (Black Pete, from Sinterklaas here was often called 'zijn knecht' = his slave), also seen with the word 'geknecht' which means enslaved or forced servitude in dutch.
      Side tangent; it is remarkable that knecht is from the same germanic root word for knight, yet it's meaning is somewhat different in my language.

    • @DeutschFuerEuch
      @DeutschFuerEuch 3 роки тому +17

      @@maxgrozema1093 Same in German, Knecht is a male serf, yeah. And definitely of Germanic origin - unlike Slav (or slave).
      The vikings actually had nothing to do with this; they would have been around early enough, but I seem to be remembering that just like in England, they actually ended up coexisting with Slavic peoples. I haven't double checked this though like I did for the stuff above. The only think I do remember with certainty is that the Ryurik dynasty that ruled Russia until Ivan the Terrible bludgeoned his only heir to death (oops) derived their name from a Viking named Rurik, some time 9th CT.
      The first evidence of the word Slav dates back at least to the 400s iirc, definitely somewhere around there. And first source often/usually means that first actual verbal usage was much earlier. The Slavs didn't write all that much down before the great mission of Cyril & Methodius (>Christianity, wee).
      Meaning: there is no way for this word to have come from English. Old English was in its infancy then and had just started developing. Iirc the Germanic tribes (Angles, Saxons, Jutes) came over roughly in 450 AD. In German at least, it appears to be pretty uncontested that "Sklave" derives from Medieval Latin "sclavus", which is based most likely either on the mentioned misunderstanding of the Byzantine Greek's or a word similar in sound of different origin and meaning. The Vikings, for once, seem to have had nothing to do with this at all.
      Now all that aside, I have no knowledge of how exactly the word made it to the Netherlands or when it was first used in Dutch. Idk if there is a k in the Dutch word - if there is, there's no way it came from English, as the English word itself also derives from the mentioned "sclavus", so we end up at the same root word eventually anyway. Does that make sense?
      (yay I'm using my degree)

    In your analysis of Africans selling slaves to Europeans you didn’t call out how badly that tore up Africa.
    Firstly because the demand for slaves actually fueled conflict and made them infinitely worse both by incentives to slave raid and by providing weapons as payments.
    Second by depopulation of able bodied adults in the continent. The economic damage done by that depopulation and the constant slave raiding to meet European demand was incalculable. The transatlantic slave trade is STILL a lasting economic impact on modern African nations today independent of later colonialism.

      That's you, propagandising in the other direction. This kind of lyingand distorting facts in both directions is so parasitical.The only mistake Candice made in this video was not approaching it from the point of view that "the West" were actually the 1st to adopt a campaign globally of eradicating slavery.Until the early 19th century, there were only attempts to end certain types of slavery within individual countries,, which is admirable in itself, but didn't do anything to the practice of slavery ITSELF. When the Brits started a campaign in the early 19th century, they were arguably the richest country in the history of the planet. And because they were the only industrialised nation. "At that point," they were literally more rich than the USA has ever been compared to other nations in the world at that point. They had steam powered gunships that were able to destroy ships everywhere all over the world and the success of this is what eventually convinced the French and the USA to join them in what became a protracted effort for nearly a century, which totally bankrupted the industry and made it more expensive to practice by far than even low paid work..
      Amazed important effect of this is that over the decades it enforced cultural impending changes in countries worldwide, because what happens over time. If something is seen as synonymous with a massive drop in your standard of living. You are going to turn against practice from a number of standpoints - and this was what was achieved uniquely by the West and this is why slavery is only practised covertly in the 21st-century and the percentage of its practice by head of population compared to before the early 19th century, is absolutely minuscule

    Quick history lesson: Scores of Black Americans served in Europe during the Great War. While there, they experienced much less discrimination and were generally treated as equals by their European counterparts. As soon as the war ended, the Black people who returned knew that a desegregated society was possible, and began aggressively fighting for their rights
    Confederate veteran societies saw that younger Black people were agitators and radicals, whereas the older ones, some of whom had been slaves themselves, were much more submissive. So starting from the 1920s, Confed societies began paying pensions to ex-slaves, wrote heroic stories about "loyal negroes" and invited them to their events where they were placed front and centre in all group photographs
    This of course wasn't a friendly jest of compassion and equality, but a deliberate propaganda move to quell rising tides of civil rights activism and show the apparent benefits of bowing to white supremacy
    On an unrelated note, PragerU hired another Black person to talk about racism

    Fun fact: the slavic self-descriptor "slovene", "sloveni" that means more or less "the people who can speak", comes from the proto-slavic word "slovo" which means "word" or "speech". The word "slovo" also still means "word" in most currently existing slavic languages and is a part of a name of some slavic nations like Slovens or Slovacks. The name for slavs in this theory came to existence once the slavs migrated west and reached the lands of the germans. Presumably, being a gathering of several dozens of separate tribes they started using this word to describe the tribes which they could talk with and understand them. Conversly, they named the germans "niemce" which in slavic languages meant "mumbling", "speechless" or simply "dumb" (not the stupid kind). Before they were subjects of Scythian empire from which they fled westwards, suppossedly due to maltreatment. The word "sclavus" which means "slav" in latin, comes from greek "sklabenoi" which comes from "slovene". The greek word was first, because the Eastern Roman Empire had much earlier and more frequent run ins with slavs who, after they couldn't pressure the germans to move further west, started migrating south to the Balkans (Bulgars, Croats and Serbs), occupying Byzantine territories, reaching Dalmatia, Albania and Macedonia (that's why the Greeks were pissed off about Rep. of Macedonia being called "Rep. of Macedonia"). Fun fact inception: Berlin was established by slavs, who were later pushed back during the Carolingian expansion in VIII century and landed east of Odra river ("Oder" in german), which from that point on was pretty consistently the border between germanic and slavic cultures.

      @@HamSaladtv Perhaps it's because I'm British but it seems mad to me that you think the civil war was a better way of ending slavery than giving compensation to the slave holders. Over 700,000 died in the American civil war, a far higher price for ending slavery than any European nation had to pay.
      The American Civil war always seemed like madness to me, an unfortunate tragedy that surely could have been avoided.

      @@Vberg i mean, would it have been nice to end slavery peacefully, perhaps. But the likelyhood that the US would have ended slavery peacefully is highly unlikely for at least another generation or more. • @HamSaladtv
      @HamSaladtv 3 роки тому +2

      Also, how could the war been avoided? Slavery was so fundemental to the US economic system that slave holders were not going to simply let it go. Lincoln even tried compensation for slavery to the border states. It didnt work.
      Besides, at least to me, several hundred years of sustained slavery , rape and torture is a lot worse to me than four years of war ending it. The war resulted in a high loss of life, but it was also the closest thing wr have had to a social revolution too.

    • @Vberg
      @Vberg 3 роки тому +2

      @@HamSaladtv I do get your point. Was there any real attempt to look into compensating all slave owners in the US and ending slavery that way? It would have been costly but surely still cheaper than fighting the civil war.
      Perhaps it's having the benefit of hindsight but even before the civil war it seemed clear that the south's slave based agrarian economy couldn't keep up with the Norths rate of economic growth. It makes me think that at some point the south would have realised that a slave based economy was not in the south's best interest. It another tragic aspect of the war that the average Confederate soldier had no slaves, and was disadvantaged by living in such a hierarchical slave based society, died in their hundreds of thousands trying to defend it. It was actually in the average southerners best interests that the confederacy lost and slavery was abolished. Surely given time the slave based economy would have just ended on its own?
      It actually makes me feel angry at the South's ruling elites that their pig headed refusal to modernise the south led to such slaughter.
      That's why certainly I struggle to view the American civil war as anything other than a tragic waste of life.

      they were already enslaved in Africa, they were just sold. and where in the video did she say that she should thank the whites? why do you make things up? She Said that good people in America and Europe stopped slavery, which does not mean exclusively white people.

    Some things just can't ever be justified; slavery, CP, banana on pizza, star trek Picard and its shamelessly stolen mass effect plot. These things are all evil. Trying to deny this is an exercise in futility.

    As someone who grew up in Ohio, it still bothers me that we just... have a city named after Christopher Columbus. Not JUST a city, the state's capital city.

    Let’s not forget, slavery is not even fully abolished today. It is still possible to enslave criminals in the US.
