I saw Kamasi Washington live for the first time a couple of days ago at Primavera Festival in Barcelona. I wasn't expecting much, as I've never heard of them before. I thought the highlight of the festival would be seeing Radiohead, a band I've grown up with and loved. It's like watching an orgie of passion that never ceases. Thank you so much Kamasi Washington for taking the time to share your beauty with me!!

Why there is so many people saying that Kamasi is the new John Coltrane? He is just Kamasi, he doesen´t even sound similar to Coltrane... I´ll wait for answers, i really want to know why.
+Tomastyr muñoz Such comparisons are baseless. Coltrane was from a bygone era, growing up listening to totally different sounds and being exposed to way different ideologies than the stuff exists today. I think Trey Anastasio (Phish) summarized this concept quite nicely in Bittersweet Motel. “I’m a child of the seventies and that’s kind of the point. With people trying to be [like] ‘oh I’m going to be the next Jimi Hendrix, I’m going to be the next Jerry Garcia,’......whatever...you’re not! Your’e twenty years younger, you didn’t grow up listening to Del McCoury, you didn’t grow up listening to the blues. You grew up…going to a high school in New Jersey...going to the mall, and listening to what was on [there]! And then I had to search out for some kind of depth.”
+Sachin Pandey The similarity is that John Coltrane in his time brought a new sound that moved away from the tendence of that period...Check out Love Supreme and some of the work he did with his wife Alice Coltrane...Kamasi in his own way is also bringing a new space in the sphere of Jazz. I think the similarity stops there other than they are both tenor players
bob robert ruesz John Coltrane had a creative spirit, he always persue a state of music thay could go further than the perception of the "being". The breakdown of time signatures on drumming during "A love supreme" or the complex compositions of solo's is an example of what i' am trying to say... from other side, Kamasi is just mixing diferent kinds of genres, It has an innovative spirit, but i doubt that he actually has the creative spirit that Coltrane used to possess. ¡And there are lots of tenor players out there as good as Kamasi...
+Tomastyr muñoz I think it comes from the genre bending, and the level of freedom that they have both achieved not only in their soloing, which many musicians are able to, but in their compositions. Coltrane later in his career would play with no real song or plan in mind, and trust the entire sound to the band's ability to listen and make truly free music. Trane's band; Elvin Jones, and Tyner had played with him for a very very long time, and each evolved with him to create a level of unity capable of playing only off of each other, similarly to Kamasi's group. Although I think perhaps Kamasi Washington didn't go down the path of technical perfection that Coltrane did (I think very few people can), and they both came from very different worlds, the space they inhabit with their fellow musicians fells very similar to me. No one else could ever really play any of these tunes and have the same effect, and why would they? The music isn't in the composition but 100% in the playing and delivery. It's also worth mentioning that when they do solo, Trane and Kamasi do often go to similar textural areas, it gives the impression that they are thinking about only playing sound, and have transcended "playing changes" completely. Although yes I agree that they have very different sounds, and comparing them as players makes no sense. They are together as musical philosophers, not players.
This is Jazz-fabulous,I will need 2 yrs to find words to describe this seamless blend of various instruments. For the Sax..it was short off"talking vacals".Wonderful...
Poof Boom Pow Damn! It’s like orchestral, complex like Zappa but accessible and it feels like you’re witnessing a greatful dead jam out but soooo much more lyrical and rhythmic. Massive like George Clinton and P-Funk but so much more to say. Like the best Jazz, Rock Classical concert you ever saw. Superlative and, well incomparable.
I was blessed to be able to see kamasi live recently and I was amazed of how good him and the rest of the WCGD sound live. This video is amazing...but if you get a chance do yourself a favor and go see them live.

They were in Berlin's YAAM on November 22nd - and I leant about it too late. No ticket available anymore. I'm still inconsolable. This music is divine. Somebody wrote "it's intergalactic energy, a storm of emotion" - and that's true, too.

Amazing!!
Music will go on thanks to this kind of genius...
..Thanks Kamasi and all of you..
Unbelievable energy and textures of sound...so unique!
You gotta give it up to America for sending these guys to the planet! Much respect from Tokyo!!!
This is Jazz-fabulous,I will need 2 yrs to find words to describe this seamless blend of various instruments. For the Sax..it was short off"talking vacals".Wonderful...
Wow. Such an incredible band. Kamasi is one talented musician. Nothing else pleases my ears as much as his solos do. Incredible. Speaaaaachless. 10/10
OMFG - best new music I have heard in YEARS - ABSOLUTELY AWESOME!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
It's a shame that cowbell is lost in the mix...
But still, this mix is INSANE
@@luishem YES! This mix is insane. Really a great experience to listen to and watch (great camera work as well) when everything is so well defined.
Lol! Poor cowbell, always gets the short end of the stick (no pun).
Wow. I could listen to this all day. Great stuff.
Powerful, the great comeback of jazz
cannot believe I just listened to greatness.. masterpiece. best jazz I've ever heard in my life
"All of the sudden Art Blakey was a thing at my school" That is so cool
I have never seen a String section Bob their heads while they play!! That's Powerful!!
wow ! this was amazing! during the "Henrietta" song, the look on Rickey Washington's face when thundercat was soloing. them feels man.
Man... I saw all these guys 3 or 4 times at the Piano Bar in Hollywood. I'm so happy they're getting the recognition they deserve
Thnks from Russia. Это эпично!

Forgot to include Malcolm's Theme around 1:33:05 in the setlist description but still, amazing stuff

OMG Yaw, where have you been all my life, so many visions in my head and heart experiencing this project!
Mind blown!!!!! This was so dope!
Whatever these amazing musicians inspire will, of course, be completely different!
This is now my favourite thing on UA-cam
I was blessed to be able to see kamasi live recently and I was amazed of how good him and the rest of the WCGD sound live. This video is amazing...but if you get a chance do yourself a favor and go see them live.
I really enjoyed this. Hadn't heard of them, but wow, I'm so glad I took the time to put it on while I do other things, and suddenly realized how wonderful this is.
It is crazy how nice they play together, much love from Berlin.
So much passion, just feeling the rhythm ~~~
No words to describe this music. Just enjoy it and have a nice trip.
Kamasi is to sax what Jimi was to guitar. Fucking incredible.
The dream story with the strings...
Oh man.
They were in Berlin's YAAM on November 22nd - and I leant about it too late. No ticket available anymore. I'm still inconsolable. This music is divine. Somebody wrote "it's intergalactic energy, a storm of emotion" - and that's true, too.
Amazing performance! Thanks!
