This movie probably will not appreciated by mainstream viewer but personally I just love it so much. Sad, haunting, living, independent, funny and friendship. Isn't conventional but what a story!!

Maggie Smith manages to be so ordinary and extraordinary at the same time. Thankfully, there doesn't seem to be too much of the luvvy about her. Some very lovely people on that platform. I read the book a couple of months ago before I knew about the film and I can't wait to see it.

I feel the same about Alan Bennett. The nearest I’ve got is watching him and Rupert choose a yard brush from the iron mongers in Settle.

I've watched this movie about oh...200 times now and it's as powerful and funny and amazing as the first time. I adore this movie, all of the characters and of course the way Alex and Maggie carries this...it's a movie everyone should see.

I think it's sweet how Alan feels he barely did a thing for Miss Shephard. Watching over her on the street, taking her onto his property (giving her electricity and an address) was not the right thing to do at all. It's simply THE thing to do. We could use more people like that. He's a kind man who did an amazing deed when he did not have to do so.

Alex Jennings is a fantastic actor. I have seen this movie many times and does Alan so wonderfully. Maggie Smith is a joy to watch. Alex should be praised for his performance to and not just Maggie.

How can they have spelt Alan's name wrong on the name plates? How insulting! It's BENNETT.

I first saw her in "The Prime of Jean Brodie" The movie was panned badly & she was done over by association. But she was the consummate expert. I hated the reviews but loved her acting

I would have like to have asked Alan Bennett if any of his plays have been produced at the West Yorkshire Playhouse in his hometown of Leeds. He did once say that , when he was growing up there, he always felt that he was living life on the side-lines.

This is NOT the real story of Sheila ... I was a child when Sheila moved her camper van down the lane , in a place called Smugglers lane in Upper Beeding near Steyning East Sussex ... Sheila was a recluse , who lived down a lane just by our house. When she first arrived she had no water , no electric and no sanitation, she would often bang on our families home door asking for fresh water... I got to know Sheila, who was a shy , but firm educated lady who always asked me to go to the shops for here to get her biscuits. Sheila wore the same cloths and same head scarf and become well known in the village because of her dress sense . He old mac was old , her dress peeped from the bottom of her coat and she wore wellington boots all the time ... She would not be seen very much out side her broken down van, because of rumour of her being mad , more because of the way she lived... The real Sheila , was raped , beaten and had her money stolen by local gypsies as well other idiots who were more afraid of her than anything else .... Every time I used to walk by her camper van , I would call out to her and she always replied back " Is that you Kathy " I would reply back yes , do you want me to go to the shops for you .... :) Sometimes she would come out and other times an hand with more or less the correct change ... The winters were very hard for her down the lane , and not as stated here on a DRIVE ..... There was no drive , she was moved on from a farm she managed to drive down the lane and broke down and thats were she stayed for many many years ... My family was very well known by Sheila , especially my Mum and brothers along with many locals .... What a sad ending to a beautiful free spirited lady , as that is what she really was , who had a wonderful smile, not seen by many as she would scurry along her way and didnt much take time to speak to people , but she she loved kids :) as much as they taunted her ... R I P MY dear lady , as I always wondered what happened to you xxx

Kathy if you look into this story it's the true story of Mary Shepherd who lived in a van outside Alan Bennett's house in London. He's in this video talking about it. Similar, but a different story.
