What 625 Hours of Hand Stitching Created: Everything I Made in My Third Year Sewing

  • Опубліковано 21 вер 2024
  • It's that time of year again, where I share everything (well most things) I made during my third year sewing! August 2023 was my 3-year sewing anniversary and probably my proudest year of creations yet.
    Like always, everything is 100% hand stitched, and all within the realm of historical fashion. I also mention the approximate hours it took for each ensemble to serve as a reminder of how labour-intensive sewing can be (and to pay homage to all dressmakers of the past and present).
    This year I gained a lot more confidence in my ability to sew clothing even without a pattern or no instructions. I also dove into sewing some of my ancestral Volga Tatar clothing.
    Thank you so much for being a part of this journey. Can you believe my channel is over 2.5 years old now?!
    A big thanks to ‪@LizGrylls‬ for helping me with the pattern for the working-class bed gown.

    Would you ever consider putting the pattern you created for the final garment (the absolutely beautiful red Tatar-style piece) up for sale? It is simply stunning and I would love to make something in this style as it seems perfect for the climate in my country, but I am not able to make my own patterns from scratch because my brain really struggles with that sort of task, so I always start with existing patterns and modify them as I go. I would certainly pay good money for a pattern for this wonderful dress!

    You might already be aware of 'Eli from Russia', a YT site about a lovely woman who is, I believe, Tatar ethnically. She travels a lot and that's mainly what her channel is about but she also provides a great deal of information about ethnic groups in Russia - and there are a lot of them!
    The videos about the different groups are quite extensive although probably missing the level of detail that a seamstress would prefer. She's been doing videos for a few years so there's lots of information there.

    I have had one of the hardest years of my life since August 2022. There has been so much loss, grief, pain, and anguish. Sewing historical fashion for the first time has been my solace through it all. Connecting to my ancestors has taught me that they have endured the impossible, so too shall I until the day I breathe my last. It's helped me not feel alone in my struggles and given me a beautiful activity to feel my time and ease my stress. And sometimes it has been the small light in the deep depressions I have felt this year.

    I love those updates from you! I think my favourite is the coat, and of course those wrappers. But the coat, oh my, it's beautiful! Such wonderful shape. Also I love those clothes that represent your ancestry. There is so much research about (middle and upper class) Western European and North American fashion, but not so much about the rest. I wish there would be a way to change it, but so much of the research is lost. I don't even have photos of my great-grandparents, because there were so little of them and they all got lost, only one photo of my Granny as a toddler. Now I realise I don't even know how any of them apart of one great-granny (who helped take care of me when I was a child) looked. I never saw them in pictures.

    • @VBirchwood
      @VBirchwood  Рік тому +1

      Start with pieces that you can wear in many combinations (such as a few blouses, a few skirts) and build from there. Recognise as well that it will time to get your wardrobe where you want it to be, and that it's a process. You can also often find historically inspired pieces (especially with blouses and skirts) in charity shops.

    How do you do small stitches when you have thick layers of cloth? When I try, I end up having large stitches? You are amazing and I find you incredibly inspiring

    • @VBirchwood
      @VBirchwood  Рік тому +1

      With thicker fabric, you generally want to work a back stitch in two parts, one going down through the fabric, and the other going back up. It's best though to try and reduce the fabric thickness as much as possible for the smallest stitches. Historically, I've found the wool of my antiques for instance, to be much thinner than wool tends to be these days, and hence easier to hand sew through. Try to minimise back stitches to only two layers of fabric and not more, and then join together if there are more layers involved.

I take a two hole button (rubber ones work great), tie a knot in my ribbon and then put it through one hole.
