My grandparents owned a pecan grove near Macon GA in the late 50's. To harvest, they would hitch a bumper to a tractor bump/shake the trees then had workers and tractors to rake up the pecans. They had Schleys, Mahans and Stuarts and taught all teh grandkids how to tell if pecans apart and if they were fresh or from last year's crop. IT was not an easy life as trees had to to be pollinated and fertilized by air.Between the tress had to be kept clear of weeds and the grass short to allow for a good harvest. My grandmother kept a shotgun near the door and had to scare off pecan rustlers who would think nothing of clearing under tree near the fence line, thinking they wont miss a few nuts! There was alot of nature lived in the grove deer, rabbits, and other wild animals as well as birds......I miss the old farmhouse but not the work to keep up the trees!
by definition, these are ORCHARDS not groves. and I'm glad he's doin this. pecans are delicious and it seems such a waste for them to rot on the ground. I pick up mine but I only have a single tree so it isn't very hard
@tmomof6 Actually, orchard may be the grammatically preferred usage. According to Random House Dictionary, an orchard is "an area of land devoted to the cultivation of fruit or nut trees. " Webster's defines an orchard as "a planting of fruit trees, nut trees, or sugar maples". That being said, growers and those in the industry seem to use the terms interchangeably.
