    Great review!
    You're absolutely right about being surprised by this bike. The first 5 minutes on this bike put the biggest grin on my face!!! One of the best bikes I've owned. Does everything very well.

    Glad to see Brian Gray's Powerbiking helping you with demonstration bikes / reviews. I started out my riding career with them several years back (CBT & DAS) and as a dealer they've always been a great help. Ridden old and new alike, currently a 1999 Thundercat.

    Very good, well presented review and sums up the MT-09 TRA perfectly.
    I've had mine for a year now and it's superb.
    Local trips in Ireland or long European hauls.....it takes all in its stride and never disgraced in more 'exotic' company.

    Great review, thank you. How refreshing for a reviewer to have no ego whatsoever. Detailed and informative, concentrating on the bike rather than how fast you can go while disregarding all other road users (as with so many others).

    Well done ... another good wrap as always. I have been looking to downgrade from my Vulcan classic cruiser 1600cc (63 yrs young and wanting a lighter ride) and with your help, I think I have just found her. Vrrrooommm. I was thinking V-Strom 1050 XT, Versys 1000, MT10. But now with this 18 ltr fuel tank on the Tracer for touring the long distances around Australia, sports-like attributes, power, and with a good pillion seat for the boss :) It has sold me. Not too many fuel stops and more riding. Now for a test ride. Thanks mate you have been very helpful. Keep those reviews coming...Cheers from down under :) and keep well...

    Another superb review Mr. MF. Also nice to recognise some familiar roads that I rode when I wore a younger mans boots!
    I bought myself an MT-09 Tracer last year and it's becoming one of my favourite bikes across over a half century of riding.
    I thought you review was excellent. Based almost wholly on the riding experience and feel of the bike. Not bogged down by technical jargon and nit-picking. One or two comparisons from your own experience of other marques was helpful as well.
    All in all, a 'proper' riders review as opposed to some self indulgent 'expert' spouting trail, rake, power-to-weight and compression ratio's. Good man!

    I’ve just got myself one, I’ve be out of biking for 20 plus years, it’s an absolutely amazing bike, so much torque, I’d recommend one to anyone. It’s like a 125 with a massive power plant.

      @@socialising6037 I don’t see why not, you’ve had plenty of experience on the KTM I take it? It’s all down to your right hand at the end of the day, it’s a pretty fast bike, it’s not too heavy and it handles reasonably well.

    Great review, a bit of a 'dream' bike for me. I can't wait until we have some nice, gently used FJ-09's on the market in the U.S. for around $5K. One of the best features in terms of maintenance and reliability is the 28,000 mile intervals for valve clearance inspections and/or adjustments.

    I've been thinking about changing my 1200GS for something a bit more manageable now I've turned 70 and having seen your excellent review I think the Tracer is the bike for me. I love the GS but it is big and heavy to move about although no problem once on the move. I did the NC500 on it last June and had a few dodgy moments on the slow twisty bits! Now I've seen your video of the Tracer my mind is made up. Thanks again and keep up the good work.

      I’m 74. I just got back from 90 days doing the Alps on a T700. It is too high for me. I was six feet. Now 5’ 10”. My inseam is 30. I have the T700 in France. I’m going to get the Tracer GT here because there ain’t too many places to make use of the T700 in the USA and the are thousands of miles apart. I don’t like real dirt anyway. This bike is a much better street bike than the T700. And I would have no issue with it in paved switchbacks.

      Shame on these other dealers. TMF, Blade Motorcycles in Abingdon [if it's not too far from you] will let you test ride their bikes . They are good people there so check them out if you can. They do Kawasaki, Honda, Ducati and Harley Davidson motorcycles so you have a good choice there. I test road the new Z900 they had and wow what a machine. It was an absolute blast. Anyway, it's just an idea since your having difficulty with some of these other makes. Happy biking.

    Great review! I traded my 2013 FJR1300 for a 2017 Tracer 900 (FJ-09 in the US) in June and you can imagine how nimble it seemed to me coming from the FJR. I did a video myself about the switch and also described the Tracer as a hoot. I love it! I thought I would agree with you about the headlights when I first got the Tracer but now I like them. The left is the low beam and the right is the high beam. When the bright switch is on, both are illuminated and you can ride like this in the daytime if you like. At night, having both on really illuminates the road very well from close up to a long way off. With the brights off and only the left light illuminated, you still have great visibility at night. In every way, the night time visibility is better than the 2013 FJR. I suspect that having the low and high beams in two different headlights simplifies designing the reflectors for the LEDs and makes them more efficient. By the way, in addition to the slipper/assist clutch, the 2017 Tracer has an improved ECU with much better fueling and an improved suspension relative to the 2014-2016 models.

    Thanks TMF, your review answered many of my questions. The 2018 MT-09 Tracer GT is definitely on my shortlist for a good step up over my current '12 Wee-Strom. Now that you have ridden the Versys 1000 (and I've watched that review) may I ask, which did you prefer more, the Tracer or the Versys as a good all rounder?

    • @TheMissendenFlyer
      @TheMissendenFlyer  6 років тому +1

    Your right about the weight, it feels very nimble and rides like a supermoto. The engine is definitely the star of the show. I felt a little sore after a few hours in the saddle on my trip back to Calais but I toured 2 up with no issues. Had the Vstrom 650 and this think felt ballistic when I moved to the Tracer. It gets a bit flirty when you push on and the screen is poor but I'm 6'3 so I guess I'll always struggle. I'd love to hear the differences between my 2015 and the new model. Fueling isn't great on mine but I heard they improved it on the new model.

    Really detailed walk around as usual but today you left the left side of the bike in the dark. A few places on the way in appeared to have a brighter opening to show both sides. Also perhaps a display of the centre stand may have been helpful to lift that left side. Top review again, thanks TMS. I thinks it's a little frustrating that the current fashion is for 'transformer' styling which irks me more than a little. I've had an '02 TDM 900 since new and it still meets my needs after 135,000km but the Tracer would be absolutely perfect if it just looked 'nice' not bitsy with things stuck everywhere... oh well, I have a '96 T'Bird cafe to get my triple thrills on and the TDM for touring. I do have one request: would it be possible to insert a clip or photo of you on a bike so that we can see your riding position (while in motion) and stationary with feet on the ground? When filtering I tend to put on high beam during the day and have had car drivers fold their mirrors in as the light is so bright, but at least I know they know I'm coming. Addicted to the triple engine. Only downside I can find for the Tracer is what out there is better, what do I go for to replace her with so far nothing has ticked as many boxes as she does.

Airhawk helped me a lot, now i can do 6 or 7 hours riding with no problems at all. On my 2017 Tracer 900 got spot lights which are really strong when riding at night through country side :D

    Late commenter! But I should say that I've just bought one of these and your review was bar far the most informative. I had an Mt07 here in Aus that I wrote off recently (that was a fun surgery to rebuild my finger) and I'm so excited to have a bike that's more "serious" haha! I'm thinking of getting one as well in the hopefully not so far future. Can you please let me know how do you think the windshield fares? I've been riding on my 2003 F650GS and I can tell you that at over 100km/h the wind is really noisy and begins to be bothering after some time riding with it, besides not being able to hear the intercom while riding, I always have to stand up on the pegs so I can hear better.
    Edit : I will be opting for the tall windshield just in case

    Nice review, I think the American version will be my next bike. My last bike was a Valkyre. The wife and I really liked that bike but I think I’d like something smaller and sportier when I’m alone ridding. Been looking at the 3 versions of this bike and I think this version meets our needs best. I like that I can mount bags to it for longer day rides. My wife’s cousin and her husband ride with us on long all day trips, the bags will make a nice addition in that case. They have a big ultra classic Harley that’s fully dressed. My Valkyre was a standard without bags or a trunk.

    Ha! I thought you'd like it. I'm loving mine. Just done a 2300 mile tour of Scotland no problem. An easy bike to live with. I particularly value your opinion as you have experience of so many machines and give unbiased and honest comparisons. I have a couple of gripes. The first bar of the fuel gauge is longer than all the rest and does nothing for 60 miles then disappears. Not very helpful. At least it has two trip recorders so you can reset one when you fill and monitor fuel range that way. My other gripe is the hardness of the seat. I speced the optional "comfort" seat but still found that too hard. I had it modified with a memory foam pad insert, which makes all the difference for long days in the saddle. When we took the cover off there was only about 5mm of soft foam over the hard foam base!

    • @TheMissendenFlyer
      @TheMissendenFlyer  7 років тому

      Yes a few have mentioned the hard seat - I didn't notice it but then I didn't do a 7 hour day on it! ....and yes it's annoying when fuel gauges do that, I think it's a common issue....thanks for watching - TMF

      Ha OK fair enough - I am coming from a Triumph Explorer which was so smooth it would almost send you to sleep! I found the Tracer very smooth under 4000rpm then it would get rough up to 7000rpm - I think it's a characteristic of that Yamaha triple to be honest. I was seriously impressed with it and will have a new one in the next couple of weeks.

    The two vs one headlights thing I've heard is basically what you said but the safety reason has to do with perceived distance. Because a bike's dual headlights would be somewhat close together a car motorist could think its another car a fair distance away and in reality its a bike that is almost ready to pass by in the other lane. I agree with you though...does look bizarre...kind of like when LED daytime running lights shut off while the indicator is flashing.

      I swapped my Tiger 1050 sport for the Tracer 900: same power, same riding position, same styling cues I.e. Road adventure, but the Tracer is 30kg lighter and the weight held lower down, between the ankles, sheer the Tiger is a big old bird, with the weight much higher up.

    You usually mention your impression of "flickbility" of the bike that your are reviewing in your videos, as
    you have here. I have no recent personal experience on motorcycles other than my Bonneville T-120 and a Honda CBR500.
    May I assume that "flickability" while subjective is some combination of weight, center of gravity, rake, trail, suspension and perhaps tires?
    How would this Tracer 900 compare to the new Triumph Street Triple RS (765cc)? I think this Yamaha at 210 kilograms or 462 pounds wet weights about 50 - 60 pounds more than the Street Triple RS .
