    Thank you for warning people about the dental corporate scams. I was a manager for twenty nine years in family dentistry. The office sold to a corporation and I resigned after six months. I just couldn’t believe how they tried to take advantage of patients that had no idea what was going on. So sad😢

      Yes, but scammers are everywhere. Her dad was a dentist, she worked in his office so she knew she was being scammed. Similarly, I studied haircare and skin care (professionally). Needed to check something, but I was in a different city so I went to people I don't know and even before I coherently explained my problem fully, she scuffed roughly my scalp with her knuckles and told me that I also have dandruff so I should buy these products to clear it up. No, I don't have dandruff, never have.

      What a sweet comment ❤ i think you make a very good point about having more photos/videos of our loved ones. That’s gonna be a new goal of mine. Thank you 😊My parents have been divorced since I was very young and they never remarried - so it’s kinda sad that i have never really seen either of them in love or as a couple. As they’re getting older, it’s something that makes me sad for them. But they swear they each love their freedom and single life. Sorry- i went off on a tangent there😂

      Agree. Love that shot of them walking. My daughter gave me Storyworth for Christmas to tell my life's story. I am SO happy I have a multitude of photo albums and tons of envelopes full of pictures so I can add photos to my story. My parents are deceased as is my younger brother. These pictures have brought me joy and also tears! Most people only have cell phone pictures now and how many have been lost?? I have Shutterfly print most of mine so I can add them to a huge album I've started. My adult children and grandchildren will be happy I did that when I'm gone and they're grandparents and parents!

    Okay have to jump on the chain dentistry topic - I hadn’t been to a dentist in 10 years (please be kind) so I found a local place NOT knowing that this was a thing. They told me I had SEVEN cavities and I felt pretty devastated. I was on maternity leave at the time and I couldn’t afford the fillings and they talked to me like I was literally going to be dead if I didn’t get this done in a week. Barely cleaned my teeth and told me they could see kids but then refused to treat my 5 year old. Fast forward 3 years later I finally got the courage to go to another dentist (a practice owned by two female dentists) and explained my anxiety. They were so kind to me and gave me a serious cleaning and guess what - no cavities. I was floored. I had two concern spots and now a year later after my 3rd cleaning with them the spots are good now 😊 I just am so glad I didn’t have the means to get my “cavities” taken care of.

    As a Dental Hygienist who HATES corporate dentistry- THANK YOU FOR SPEAKING UP! The majority of us hate chain dentistry and the money grabbing they stand for. I will always love private practice more than chain dentistry, and especially for patients to start noticing the change in their care, SOMETHING NEEDS TO CHANGE!!

  • @chynelleeverett1826

    I'm a dental hygienist and everything you said about private practice vs corporate (chains) is correct. Sometimes you get lucky with a corporate office but they typically have quotas they need to make. It's so hard for dentists to own private practice due to student loans and lack of good insurance reimbursement. It's sad for the dental world. I worked dentistry for 5 years and finally left to be a registered nurse. I was tired of treatment planning patients based on what insurance covers, always trying to sell something, and not doing what's best for the patients. My best recommendation is to find a dental office based off of recommendations from people you know.

      Our past dentist left her practice to go work at a prison because she wants to retire and the prison gives her the best benefits. Someone else took over and she was amazing but she was in the military and had to leave for duty than they got a temporary doctor and he was the worse, treated my 6 year old son poorly and kept flirting with the older ladies (he was old) and I knew it was red flag especially when we are waiting 20 mins over our appointment time. We changed dental and it’s better we are happy. They are now closed.

    Saw you at the candlelight concert. Thank you so much for recommending it! It was a great show (HZ). Funny story - my husband was looking at you while asking me out loud “Why do I know that girl, she seems so familiar” I turned and saw you and said. That’s the UA-camr that recommended the concert. You know, the badass that had acne but showed her skin on camera for foundation reviews, went on accutane, The brush collection, nomad from San Diego” Lol. Then a subscriber walked up and said “I’ve been watching you since accutane days” We laughed and had an unsaid realization that you’ve basically been in the background of our lives for a very long time. Thanks again I love your show dude!

    Oof the moment you started talking about the dentist, I thought to myself "let me guess, you suddenly have a mouth full of cavities and need $1200 worth of work." Same thing happened to me at 2 different places before I found one I could trust. I learned it's better to pay up for the cleaning/exam and have a dentist that isn't incentivized to make up reasons for more invasive procedures.

    DUDE! When I first graduated college, I moved across the country and was on my own for the first time. So I needed to find a dentist. Well, 22 year old me didn't know you couldn't just trust all dentists. I went to this chain dentist place that looked super nice, etc. I go in for a CLEANING and a check up. This dentist goes "oh you have a cavity lets get that taken care of right now" and again, not knowing any better, and still in the chair with my mouth propped open I was like um ok. Well this dude starts drilling...and drilling...and drilling and I am like JFC THIS HURTS PLEASE STOP. He is like "hmm that's weird..." then 5 minutes later "oh well it's because I hit the root, you are going to need a root canal instead" mind you...I WAS THERE FOR A CLEANING! I was so stressed and so upset but at this point I was in so much pain and most of my tooth was missing. It took this dentist nearly SIX HOURS to do one root canal. It never healed, because it wasn't done properly. I got a new, amazing dentist(similar to your dad, small office, family run, same staff for 30+ years, amazing) and he was like uhhh this is a hack job and he tried to fix it but that failed too, and ultimately I had to have the entire thing pulled and an implant installed. All said and done that one tooth that never needed a root canal in the first place cost me 10k dollars.
    Vet your dentists guys, it's not worth it to see a mediocore one, it won't save you any money I promise.

    I went to Aspen Dental in my early 20s because I had no insurance. They said I had many cavities, forced me to get a scaling before they would fill any teeth (& I had one that I definitely needed filled) , and they pressured me into an expensive toothbrush. They filled my wisdom teeth! My current dentist was like, wtf? I wish I knew not to trust them, but I was desperate. They were extremely unprofessional, too.

I am 150% convinced that I didn't need them, and now I am paying for it as an adult with bad teeth. They also performed an impacted wisdom teeth removal surgery with only novocaine... I went to an Aspen dental a few years ago for a gum issue, because I was in pain and couldn't get in to see my regular dentist right away. They forced me to do x-rays, then the "dentist" came in and told me that I had three or four (can't remember) cavities that she could see on the x-ray. I said "Thanks but I'm here for my gum issue and I'll take this up with my regular dentist". Of course, when I made it to my regular dentist for a clean, no cavities. I found it deeply disturbing that a "dentist" was willing to do unnecessary dental work on my healthy teeth.

It's no wonder that you grew into such a self-aware, kind, happy, lovely young woman. Edit: I had the ABSOLUTE WORST experience with one of those awful chain dentist offices. They pulled a baby tooth and didn't even tell me they were going to do it ahead of time! They claimed they had to because the "root was dead" on my Xray. What root??? It was a permanent baby tooth? I hope I have a marriage like the one your parents have one day. A sit down vid asking your parents for marriage/relationship advice would be a good idea for a vid! Much love XOXO

    The exact same thing happened to my son. He moved 5 years ago to Atlanta but, still used a dentist here in Mississippi. He couldn't get home for a while so decided to get his 6 months cleaning at a local clinic in Atlanta. Which also was a type of clinic where they have multiple offices. They did x-rays first. Even though he didn't need them. Then tell him he has 5 cavities. He knew he didn't. He left before they even cleaned his teeth. They were scamming him saying it was going to be over $1000 and trying to get him to get a credit account. No telling how many fall for it.

    Im really blessed that one of my friends’ husbands is my dentist. He’s totally different in the office and very focused and thorough. My dad was a detective and I have dark humor. I commented while he was studying my x-rays that if something happened to me, the police would be set. He was a little shook, but then I reminded him and he laughed. I would think those chain-type places would be like my pediatric dentist and try to find any way to make n “upsale.”. I like being a patient, not a dollar sign.

    Sooo idk if anyone else feels the same but I would definitely love some educational pointers from your dad regarding dentistry. I have little experience with dentist or anything related to it because I come from a low income family and lack of insurance. Like I feel like my level of knowledge on dental hygiene and seeing a dentist is so low. It would feel nice to get this info from someone who is trustworthy and not trying to money grab…

    Oh man, I've been a hygienist for 13 years and have actually practiced in Boston for the entirety of my career so far. Corporate dentistry is absolutely ruining the field imo. I've recently moved into the insurance claims field for a bit of break on my body, but my previous doctor was so awesome. Very small private practice in Back bay, it was owned by his father before him and it seems like it would have fit the vibe that your dad's office was. Also any office offering a super discounted intro appointment special is making up that money somehow, imo.

    I’ve had the gold Oura ring for a year now. I swam with it all summer last year, shower, wash my hands etc and it has never changed color! It does scratch pretty easily so the side on the inside of my hand looks worn, but the top flat part still looks new! ❤️

      Did you find its worth it?

    • @EmilyHansen6
      @EmilyHansen6 Рік тому

      @@deidref96 it definitely depends on what you’re looking for in a tracker. I had the Apple Watch for 5 years before the Oura and I really didn’t like getting notifications all day, it doesn’t stay charged for more than a day so I couldn’t sleep in it or track my sleep. I will say the Oura ring doesn’t track workouts as well as the Apple Watch and is more focused on overall health and sleep. It still counts steps and daily calories burned etc. I personally love it. It’s so easy to wear and looks a lot better than most other trackers!
      Also, if you lift weights a lot it is annoying to wear while doing that, but you can manually enter workouts if that’s not a big deal to you!
      IMO it’s very different from a Apple Watch, garmin or Fitbit but it has been my favorite for overall/daily health and wellness!

    • @deidref96
      @deidref96 Рік тому

      @@EmilyHansen6 ahh, thanks good to know! I personally got an Apple Watch maybe a year and a half ago and use it to track sleep, health & exercise. I personally don’t have a battery longevity issue at all, so maybe this will be something to consider before I update the watch in the next few years.

    I’ve never had an honest dental experience. It’s usually traumatic, painful, cold and beyond expensive. One will tell me my mouth is filled with cavities and the next will say something totally different. I’ve been given crowns for no reason and had teeth worked on while I feel everything and they say I’m crazy. Ugh, I could write a book about how bad my experiences have been. I go to dental schools now, that’s the best and most honest work I’ve had done. Glad to know, it’s not just me and others have experience this.

    Here to weigh in on dentistry as one does 😅 I’m an RN, I used to do wellness visits with 65+ patients and the amount of times I tell you that ASPEN DENTAL told these poor people (often literally poor, and Medicare has no coverage for dentists so they went to where they hoped they could afford care) that they needed *ALL* of their teeth removed and to get full dentures, it was nuts. As soon as someone mentioned Aspen I knew where the story was headed. Luckily the people who could afford it went elsewhere and usually found out they needed some work but nothing like removing every freaking tooth. Oh AND I heard so many times that patients got the dentures and they couldn’t wear them because the fit was so poor (and Aspen wouldn’t make it right) my running joke was that Aspen only makes one model of dentures they just sell to everyone. I warned all my patients about them, please be aware of their practices for yourselves and loved ones! Your dads patients were definitely lucky! 🖤

    I'm a dental assistant of 10 years and everything you said about corporate dental offices is 100% true. And they are trying to take over basically. I work in an office that does an advanced education in general dentistry resident program and helps these residents get jobs after the program all over the country. There are a lot of older dentists in our area that are retiring. We are buying these practices and placing the dentists graduating from our residency that want to stay in the area, in those offices to eliminate corporate dentistry in our area. ❤

    I have never been to that type of dentist thank god! Mine is a family owned dentist. The father and 2 sons. Sons are in their 40’d now and the father is mostly retired. He comes in for extractions only. They are amazing and have all the best dad jokes. I was in the billing office chatting with the lady who does billing one day. The dad had just extracted someone’s tooth and was so excited because the roots were curly. He was going around showing it to everyone because all the curled roots came out fully intact. While trying to show the billing lady it slipped out of his fingers and landed on the table in front of me. The look on his face was hilarious! I laughed so hard I almost peed. I know everyone by name and they know me too. So grateful for my experiences!
    Edit to say that I didn’t know your dad was a dentist. Now that I know… it totally makes sense! He is just like my dentists dad. 😆

    I went to a smaller, privately owned dentist office for years then decided to switch to a closer "chain" office after I moved (Smilebuilderz) and never again!! They gave me a filling that wound up giving me discomfort for weeks after. I went back to get it repaired and it was still uncomfortable. Eventually I wound up going back to the old dentist I trusted to get her perspective, and she said that the material that they used on my filling didn't make any sense for the location of the tooth, and that it was likely they just used that because it's more expensive. I got her to fix it, immediately felt better, and now I'm willing to drive further just to keep going back to her!
