Dane Carter all really good points, but do you remember the theory in the classroom in regards to pitch, yaw and roll? Pitch - forward and backwards swing. Roll - side to side swing. Yaw - oscillation when you twist. The one thing we can take from this, thee most important thing we can take from this is that pod harnesses create more yaw rotation then your open harness due to the fact that when you’re seated your legs are dangling, so your centre of gravity is much more stable. When in a pod harness having your legs stretched out, your chances of yaw motion is much higher because your legs are acting like a swing, and that extra weight that has been added to your lateral axis is now affecting your angle of attack, there for stunts like helis which are one of your easier manoeuvres to learn (over time! So don’t get too ahead of yourself) is being countered by the non reaction of the wing! So he’s twisting is a yaw motion and as you saw, he twisted up before he even had a chance to attempt to counter it! Lesson learnt? Never do acro moves in a pod harness! You can get acro harnesses, but you can use any seated harness for these manoeuvres, but an acro harnesses is deigned to position your body for maximum use of energy and body positioning to enter such manoeuvres... The moment he tried to start his helis you can see there is no reaction from his wing! As he mentioned it was die to light conditions!,, that doesn’t mean anything! I will tag you in another comment I made on here in regards to this! You can heli on pretty much any wing, no matter it’s rating, my 3YO daughter loves them and I usually lay a few down for her before we come into land! I’ve been skydiving for over 20 years and PG for about ten, and a CFi for close to two years now, so I get to fly pretty much every day, but I never took any shortcuts, followed all the rules and lessons I was taught, and I still don’t take any unnecessary risks, especially I’m doing tandems, but helicos are always a favourite, plus Brie extra weight of being two up helps to really get them going! As you grow as a pilot, once you gain some altitude, practice some mild wing overs, but remember always ‘active flying’! As you pull hard down on your right toggle be ready to bring that left down as the right comes up, like a lever! Find nice even motions and don’t go too big or get too fast or you’ll enter SAY and that’s another ball game altogether brother... Once you’re faxing backwards you run the risk of actually coming out of it backwards and flying the wrong direction and causing a collapse and dim simming yourself!... Any other questions just tag me and I’ll happily answer anything you need dude, I just want to see new students fly safe and smart, active flying my friend, active flying...
Dane Carter If you cant find the point in the first two sentences you shouldn’t be flying! Good luck sport! I made it crystal clear how he found himself in this position and you can’t find it? You best go back and do a refresher course mate
Thanks for sharing! I am doing SAT every week now and I can clearly see you pull way too much brake before you had any energy for entering SAT. Pod harness or not, this was the main cause. Always wait for the spiral energy before you pull more brake. Peace out 🤗
So glad I made the Beamer3 investment too. Haven't thrown it yet but your decent and landing was so reassuring if I ever have to. Thanks for Sharing, be safe. I fly in Verbier mostly so not too far from you I guess.
Nice control and emergency handling. I have done a tandem skydive and i can empathize how you would feel when such a thing happens. The parachute fuchs 😀
@Chris Landry Delta II wing, in the US the Paradactyl aka the Maladactyl. They had a short window in the first half of the 1980s so if you werent around then or around where they were poular you may have missed it. There was also the Thunderbow which was roughly triangular but more like a high performance round canopy if that makes any sense. They all got swamped by the arrival of square canopies.
😬...💩... Damn. I'm glad you're ok👍🏻 and thanks for sharing your story and your break down of the events. These stories save lives only if they are shared. Sub'ed 🤜🤛
I'd fly that Reserve all day long! Look how stable it was. I remember that "style" of main parachute (free fallers) in the late 60's. Never caught on, though. Had major problems with opening shock at terminal velocity - WHACK! you could hear the opening on the ground. :) A reefing system was used - that, as I recall, was a bridle cord wrapped around the suspension lines to allow the triangular chute to opening more slowly. Bad system overall. No-one bought any of those on the market. Then there was the Para Commander - then the "wing." And the rest is history. B-6370
Nick Jones he’s right. You don’t attempt acro in a pod, and the pilot describes his experience in the description, but a pod harness causes lots of oscillation and YAW movements as mention by Patrick in other comments, and he (the pilot) says he usually uses an ACRO harness.
Nick Jones still would have been too late, once enough YAW takes over you can either ride it out or counter it, however this poor bugger was already stalled which wouldn’t have made a difference. I get why he’s in a pod, looks fresh where he’s doing his siv course, had the time, altitude and confidence, why not, but that was his downfall, and if you read his comment under the video he completely lays out he effed up, mistakes happen, but fro my experience and as a cfi I see many mistakes in this video, and I’m glad he made it a slight tutorial and warning to others rather then showing off or just posting it for the sake of it Blues skies brother
No critique here -you're here to fly another day. Bravo! . Follow-up text great idea. I wonder if this prevented tragedy example is taught. Every flyer can find something within this vid. so to personalize & perhaps keep themselves here to fly another day. Or to walk away & give it up.

Thanks A LOT for sharing ! I have a Kolibri and want to buy a Beamer 3 Light, wich size do you use the 36 m2 for 100 kg or the 42 m2 for 130 kg, i am not sur that the 42 m2 goes into the Kolibri Harness, what do you think ? thanks.
David Crooks they really do. I have a Beamer 2, and I’ve used it for play, just a stunt to do BASE jump and it’s slow sink rate is crazy compared to an actual skydiving canopy or reserve, they are worth every cent in my opinion.
David Crooks me too. The Beamer 3 will be in my harness in about a month of so, but my 2 has served me well! Used it on a siv course, also did a few BASE jumps on it after releasing from my canopy and they are deployed so rapidly! As a skydiver and BASE jumper, it was actually really cool! The sink rate is unbelievably slow, for my weight like 3, 3.5 metres per second is what I got from my gps and vario information. Great investment, and I keep my Apco mayday on my chest mount if doing acro, it has longer lines so easier and safer to throw if I fuck out on my first reserve launch which has never happened het thankfully
i would like to hear how well the beamer went where you wanted,,i just ordered on.I fly an A wing and do not do acro, because during nearly 50 years as a pilot i have seen too many deaths.powered paragliding is my latest adventure. The steering is important to me cause where i fly is heavily treed between meadows and power lines follow every road,,it would be a shame to throw a reserve and then float down with no directional control in to 250,000 volt powerlines
Can someone explain to me, why hasn't anyone thought of adding a carcass to a paraglider? It would have been so much easier to control and less chance of a failure
Wow that was a horrible entry haha! I have never thrown and wonder how hard it would be to pull in the glider, especially with "y" strapped reserve off my shoulders. I have practiced on the ground in strong wind and it's really hard to get even the minimally inflated tip to come in. I'm considering quick release biner's too. hmm. Thanks for the reality check mate!
HVYMETL you have too! If you panic and aren’t thinking clearly or scrambling you are wasting valuable time and altitude where you could be calmly assessing the situation and deal with it calmly and make sure you follow all your procedures and training and experience to get you back down to earth safely. He landed perfectly and he had time and height on his side, and panicking only causes you to miss crucial information of what’s going on around you!..
Bulent akyildiz Beamer 3 to be precise! Huge step up from their original design! It’s now my main and my older Apco round it kept in a front mount container for doing the fun stuff! But from my original Beamer to my now unthrone 3 much quicker opening time, slower sink rate, toggles easier to reach and find if low throw, and much more responsive in its steering capabilities
Bulent akyildiz seeing as you have only been flying for about a year from your video dates, I recommend you wait longer before even considering a Rollo reserve! Too much going on unless you have skydiving experience? If not then wait at least a solid two years or a good 100 hours first man, they can be very dangerous if under a lot of pressure and not used to using a steerable canopy! Or do a SIV with one and throw it a few times under different conditions and collapses, but I’d be keeping a back up just in case!...
Bulent akyildiz he’s right though. Take your time before using a rollo and even go do a siv because they are a completely different reserve altogether. Glad you were alright Joel 👍🏻
Thanks for sharing and the thoughtful, objective analysis you added in writing. I'm curious if now, with more hindsight on the situation, what your thoughts are on whether/how you could have exited the situation when your risers were so twisted? I counted 7 to 9 twists. Would love your insight on (1) once you saw the twisting start, can you halt it from progressing? and (2) once you were twisted and the wing was at least stable, could you have halted the spin by pulling on the brakes above the twist area? Thanks for your insight!
As someone that is about to start PPG training I really appreciate this video. Thanks for sharing and letting people see what can happen and how it can be overcome safely. Explaining the errors leading up to the problem was excellent. BTW, what does SAT stand for? Thanks very much.
Kristen Borchin not necessarily. I’ve been skydiving since I was 17, 20 years now, and I’ve only ever deployed my reserve twice and never thought this is it. Paragliding for over ten years now, I’m a CFI at a reputable school, and unfortunately trying to do acro in a pod harness places your body in a completely different position then if you were in a acro or standard harness. What do you fly?
Also should point out that this is a high performance wing which sacrifices stability and forgiveness for performance. There are many wings out there that would have reinflated easily... Not to mention the other issues mentioned in these comments about how the situation could have been approached better. As a fellow fixed wing pilot, Don't knock it til you try it or have a thorough understanding.
Kristen Borchin Josh is right though, his wing doesn’t help for any forgiveness, however, doing acro in a pod harness was calling out disaster from the beginning
Francis Rogallo invented it and had the patten for it long befor nasa was even a thing yet. en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Francis_Rogallo Interesting read....
The Beamer looks safer even if you dont have a quickout system, the sink rate is much better than other rescues isnt it? WOuld it be a problem if you couldnt get your glider and just let is flying randomly? thx
Correct me if im wrong. To go to SAT, one would pass through a quick Spiral like moment. So you start a spiral and pull through to a SAT.. You said you braked so much to kill the glider on one side.. why would you do that?
As skydivers, our wing loading is vastly different from a paraglider. Smaller wing aspect ratios of a parachute yield greater pressure in the cells minimizing the risk of collapse. However, as you’ll eventually find out, parachute canopies can still collapse in turbulent winds caused by tall trees, terrain, or buildings on your DZ. As mentioned, a paraglider’s aspect ratio is much higher enabling the pilot to gain lift to sustain flight. Less pressure is built up in their cells making them more vulnerable to poor wind conditions.
I do that for many hours, just sit and enjoy, sometimes it's fun to change things up a bit. Also for safety/wing controll, learning acro is very helpfull....
Funny to see (as an old time skydiver) them used as a reserve. They did not make a great main canopy and nobody in their right mind back them would use them as a reserve. But different times and different application, not chucking it into a terminal velocity wind makes a slight difference.
Thanks for sharing, and lucky you had a beamer (else you might have landed somewhere inhospitable) good job on the glider retraction! I am wondering though, you had a shiiiiitload of twists but the glider appeared to be in a relatively OK attitude. You where very high as well, so imho enough space for trying to recover without needing the reserve. Why did you not try rotating out of the twists by kicking (i cant see it on the vid, maybe you did try) but instead go for deployment? I did see the turns building up but it did not look really crazy yet or where you afraid of going GLOC?
'For FUCHS sake". Wasn't it waaaay to windy for that wing?" Just sayin' ! (All the misspelled words in the captions where hilarious BTW!) loved the following commentary. Well done.
A very useful video. What was your all up weight and which size beamer were you flying ? I have a beamer and am interested to know how big an issue downplaning will be should I have to throw it while the wing is flying. I also fly with a bridle hook knife just in case but I would hope the reserve will slow the wing sufficiently to allow it to be pulled in. A very good example of why should always wear gloves ! Any thoughts ?
The dealer , who sold you the Finsterwalder quick out is not professional. You have to use for the speed system a separating shackles. With this combination you would not have had any problems. 40 m over grond you cut the other side of the glider and concentrating for the landing. No stress. My tip, all times a belt safety knife on the cockpit:-) Soon coming, the Paralock from Finsterwalder, new cut away carabiner like a normal one, much more lighter !
If you listen to the original non slowmo clip your hear the vario. The glider pitchs back and goes up, I start the turn, after about 180° the Glider pitches infront witch makes the wing not as heavaly weighted. It goes more horizontal then it should at that point. I should have done a spiral to built energy yes.
@@joel.fuchs_ I can really comprehend why that happened, just a slight difference in conditions and the usual timing on the brakes and you get a stall. Its important to stay awake and feel the brakes. Also had two stalls while learning SATs but managed to recover it (once with a quick full stall before it really could twist, and once with some intuition and luck) but without pod harness which helped a lot. I then learned that you can almost always initiate a SAT, even out of moderate spirals, there is no 'too late' to pull the SAT (normal high B-Glider). It even works without the hand on the riser but thats very uncomfortable in a pod harness (feels like your back breaks). So i usually relax and pull a bit late so there is no risk of stalls. Playing with my Tonic 14 also really opened my eyes, just a slight pull in the spiral and its in a SAT, sometimes even without intent, its really fun. You did a really good job throwing the reserve, good decision at the right time and the Beamer really shines, now i want one, too. Thanks for sharing!
With this kind of situation you fall very quickly and there's a very high risk you forget to look how close the ground is while trying to solve the problem. Also I'm not even sure it would have been possible to solve those twists with a pod

@@patrickswayze2596 Yes - what is your point?
Dane Carter If you cant find the point in the first two sentences you shouldn’t be flying!
Good luck sport! I made it crystal clear how he found himself in this position and you can’t find it?
You best go back and do a refresher course mate
Thanks for sharing! I am doing SAT every week now and I can clearly see you pull way too much brake before you had any energy for entering SAT. Pod harness or not, this was the main cause. Always wait for the spiral energy before you pull more brake. Peace out 🤗
Yeah,he spun it before it got face down.
Well done! I've never thrown my reserve before so it's interesting to see that they have break toggles. All I know is that mine is square.
Most are not steerable
Glad you landed safely! Great video to see a full twist with reserve throw.
Give you credit. Having plenty of air between you and the ground todo everything you needed todo in case of a wing failure. Nice job.
Why do paragliders just randomly fall from the sky so often? If never seen this happening with skydiver - parachutes or base jump - parachutes
Thanks for sharing this video with comments. Glad you're okay!
Man great shot of Zermatt though while you under the emergency canopy! Glad you are safe :)
So glad I made the Beamer3 investment too. Haven't thrown it yet but your decent and landing was so reassuring if I ever have to. Thanks for Sharing, be safe. I fly in Verbier mostly so not too far from you I guess.
Yeah try to keep it that way😬😄
Flew a couple of times in verbier, nice place...😎👌🏼
Nice control and emergency handling. I have done a tandem skydive and i can empathize how you would feel when such a thing happens. The parachute fuchs 😀
Love that reserve. When I was skydiving, I had a main parachute similar to that reserve.
@Chris Landry Yes. I'm old.
Very impressed with your cool recovery. Good job 👍👍
What a beautiful reserve that beamer is. I love Icaro gliders as well. Glad you landed safely.
I was always taught to get your legs underneath when pulling manoeuvres. Also, grab above the twists to stop further twists you can then unwind.
Can’t really in a pod harness dude.
Read his description, he explains where and why he was doing what he was doing...
Nick Jones he’s right. You don’t attempt acro in a pod, and the pilot describes his experience in the description, but a pod harness causes lots of oscillation and YAW movements as mention by Patrick in other comments, and he (the pilot) says he usually uses an ACRO harness.
@@patrickswayze2596 Agreed don't do acro in a pod but you should still get your legs under no problem.
Nick Jones still would have been too late, once enough YAW takes over you can either ride it out or counter it, however this poor bugger was already stalled which wouldn’t have made a difference.
I get why he’s in a pod, looks fresh where he’s doing his siv course, had the time, altitude and confidence, why not, but that was his downfall, and if you read his comment under the video he completely lays out he effed up, mistakes happen, but fro my experience and as a cfi I see many mistakes in this video, and I’m glad he made it a slight tutorial and warning to others rather then showing off or just posting it for the sake of it
Blues skies brother
Yikes! Good job!
I'm so glad you're ok :( nice job with the reserve parachute
Wow great job 👏 the wing was a handful but you got it in 👍👍
No critique here -you're here to fly another day. Bravo!
.
Follow-up text great idea. I wonder if this prevented tragedy example is taught. Every flyer can find something within this vid. so to personalize & perhaps keep themselves here to fly another day. Or to walk away & give it up.
Congratulations, Mr. Fuchs.
It must've been hard to keep a clear head while you're plummeting to earth.
Very informative the way you put the video together, many thanks!! Thought maybe the reserve was not necessary, but don't know how deep you were into the spiral...
Spanda Kenji of course reserve was necessary didn’t you see the twisted lines? What are you talking about?
Interestingly enough, his wing stayed open for quite some time after he threw the shoot.
How the Fuch sake did you not cramp up? My arms hurt just from watching the struggle... So glad you survived that mess.
Well, on the plus side, you're probably not constipated. Glad you made it out ok. That was crazy.
Thanks A LOT for sharing ! I have a Kolibri and want to buy a Beamer 3 Light, wich size do you use the 36 m2 for 100 kg or the 42 m2 for 130 kg, i am not sur that the 42 m2 goes into the Kolibri Harness, what do you think ? thanks.
Wow!!!!!! ........Their not kidding when they say the Beamer deploys fast. 👍👍👍peace out 🇬🇧
David Crooks they really do.
I'm considering quick release biner's too. hmm. Thanks for the reality check mate!
cool that you had the presence of mind to calmly gather your wing.
Dude that’s bad ass you didn’t panic nice one ☝️!!!
Nice save man! staying calm and handling everything!!
My thoughts are you’re alive! Good job brother!
Can someone explain to me why you don't cut loose the bad one? It seems like it's a huge tangle risk and you should just get rid of it.
I think all you guys are Nuts, I`m a fixed wing glider pilot and never get frightened for stuff like that.
markboyle Yeah potentiallly dying isnt that frightening afterall
Good decision. With that many line twists, and unpredictable terrain down below. I wouldn’t done the same. Was expecting you to cut away the main tho
Amazing. Thanks for sharing. what is the yor RESERVE name? Thanks. 🙏🙏💪💪
Beamer 3
Patrick Swayze Jesus dude, did you
Comment on every other comment 😂😂😂
Bulent akyildiz he’s right though. Take your time before using a rollo and even go do a siv because they are a completely different reserve altogether.
Glad you were alright Joel 👍🏻
are those beeps wing feedback? beautifully cute
Feine Sache mit dem Rogallo, vorausgesetzt, die Höhe stimmt! Happy Landings!
Nice shot of the Matterhorn about 16 seconds in
As someone that is about to start PPG training I really appreciate this video. Thanks for sharing and letting people see what can happen and how it can be overcome safely. Explaining the errors leading up to the problem was excellent. BTW, what does SAT stand for? Thanks very much.
It's an acro figure

Thanks very much. I asked that question about one year ago. I really appreciate it.
👍
Amazing how fast a wing turns into a glad trash bag. I'll stay with fixed wing aircraft all day long.
There are no birds with inflatable wings , be the bird, fixed wings for me., may the inflation force be with you and your friends
Kristen Borchin hahaha
Kristen Borchin Josh is right though, his wing doesn’t help for any forgiveness, however, doing acro in a pod harness was calling out disaster from the beginning
Bow long did it take to untangel the gleider
The stripy chute is based on a design by NASA originally made to help Apollo capsules be steamed during landing. Sometimes called NASA wing.
Francis Rogallo invented it and had the patten for it long befor nasa was even a thing yet. en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Francis_Rogallo
Interesting read....
That is so true. I was once had s NASA wing only 2 feet across when I was a kite flyer. It had amazing pulling/lifting power even at that small size.
That Beamer put you down gently. Makes be second guess my reserve choice.
Thats an awfully high aspect ratio wing to be doing acro on. And in a pod harness…. You were asking for this.
You said you braked so much to kill the glider on one side.. why would you do that?
hello
what reserve is that?
tq
Wonder if you could have pulled off a SAT in the reserve chute!
Glad you landed safely.. 💛
New skydiver, been 6 times. Its hard for me to understand how that rigg looks like its gonna collapse like that ? So its less dense the air ?
As skydivers, our wing loading is vastly different from a paraglider. Smaller wing aspect ratios of a parachute yield greater pressure in the cells minimizing the risk of collapse. However, as you’ll eventually find out, parachute canopies can still collapse in turbulent winds caused by tall trees, terrain, or buildings on your DZ. As mentioned, a paraglider’s aspect ratio is much higher enabling the pilot to gain lift to sustain flight. Less pressure is built up in their cells making them more vulnerable to poor wind conditions.
@@Ducky27645 Hey thanks for letting me know. I understand now. Thanks
Shalom, isn't it better and even more fun just to relax in the air and not to perform any acro at all?
I do that for many hours, just sit and enjoy, sometimes it's fun to change things up a bit. Also for safety/wing controll, learning acro is very helpfull....
Thanks to Francis Rogallo for the design of the parawing
Well done.
Thanks for the video Congratulations for accident-free landing
Expectacular Beamer low sink speed
A very useful video. What was your all up weight and which size beamer were you flying ? I have a beamer and am interested to know how big an issue downplaning will be should I have to throw it while the wing is flying. I also fly with a bridle hook knife just in case but I would hope the reserve will slow the wing sufficiently to allow it to be pulled in. A very good example of why should always wear gloves ! Any thoughts ?
The beamer has good dominance and downplaining shouldn't be a big issue I think... and yes always gloves
Next autumn, unfortunately.
I have it correctly setup on my acro harness but not on the pod harness. No fault with the dealer...
Rough air?
I think it's just a big lack of energy in this SAT entry...
MaxO never do acro in a pod harness! Period!
Why did your main collapse/ go to shit? Also no hook knife?
Is that Matterhorn on the horyzont ?
Maybe the wing could have been reopened... The pilot was really high and had time to work on the twists...
or maybe not, easy to say when you are not in the moment
With this kind of situation you fall very quickly and there's a very high risk you forget to look how close the ground is while trying to solve the problem.
Also I'm not even sure it would have been possible to solve those twists with a pod
You guys that do acro, you super brave or nuts.
Whats that mad beeping sound all the time?
