Most Saturdays my brother and I would go to this store in the 1990s. We absolutely loved it. I went back a few times recently and it has lost it's soul. It is a place for wannabees.

You're absolutely right. I could see it years ago when I did agency work there between 2003-2006. It wasn't the same.

How I would love to go back to these days , no phones, no internet shops , living life to the full , instead of existing in never ending fear and control from a pandemic 😷 😢

This is the golden age of UK retail. It's now long gone.

I cant believe this was more than thirty years ago I remember we bought our first vaccum cleaner from there and carried it home on the bus that same year. It was Electrolux.

I worked there for 6 years in the 1980s as a young kid in the shirt dept and I left in 1987. Kept on having arguments with customers I was young then with no sense of customer service like I have now. I went back there a in 2012 lasted just 2 weeks and left and I just couldn't wait to leave awful. So many Eastern European'S working there and some I just couldn't stand to be around.

To many people doing that very like you had but they don’t get the full wage like you would’ve got and that’s why every shop- pub -cafe- building-
Any thing you can mention they are there doing the job for half price and that’s a disgrace to the English people and all over the world now

I worked at Selfridges too Carol, between 1986 and 1989 when it was run by Tim Daniels. I worked in the "small electricals" dept on the lower ground floor. Do you remember the staff canteen on the top floor? And I think the staff entrance was on Duke Street. I have fond memories of working there in the 80's. Did you remember the kerfuffle when Liz Taylor came to promote her perfume? 'Passion". I even remember when Salman Rushdie came to promote his controversial book.

@neilmcintosh5150 I worked there between 2003-2006. Yes the staff entrance was on Duke Street and I think the staff canteen is still on the top floor.

Anyone else worked here in the 80's?

Not many people know this. Harvey Nichols used to be part of Debenhams and was the posh part along with Browns of Chester. Burton Group purchased Harvey Nichols and Debenhams in the 80's then split them off in the late 90's with Harvey Nichols being sold to someone else. Harvey Nichols are still here in 2024 but Debenhams and Browns of Chester are long gone to the retail sky.

OMG @ that hideous Gucci concession. No wonder they had to bring in Tom Ford . . .

how come in the '80s every person had a full set of thick hair?
just thick hair all around everyone, didn't matter what race of age they were they had a thick coat of hair
it's not even the Afro popularity of the 70s Disco era,
and yet today NO hairdresser can give me a full hairdo to last a full evening!

1980s hairstyling was more poofy. Those days perms were common, and back-combing which would make hair appear more thick. Also flat irons were probably uncommon. People would probably only blow dry.

Worked here in the 80s. The dreadful Mrs Brodey and her 'come on girls' routine.
