What an outstanding Company Commander Phil Neame was, he really epitomises what leadership is all about. Also, a great recounting of his experiences during the Falklands conflict.
Interestingly enough Neame has a pretty rich family history. His father won the VC in WW1, became an army general and was captured in North Africa during WW2!
@@richardmason6263 Phil Neame did very well considering that weight of responsibility from his family legacy. Most people would be crushed under that level of responsibility.
Thank you. Utterly fascinating, from the horse's mouth, as it were. And it utterly demolishes the current fad of referring to a fictional "patriarchy". These men fought and died for two female commanders: Queen Elizabeth II, and Margaret Thatcher.
Brilliant stuff 👍 I love the fact he said "not what the school of infantry" would expect, I did my Brecon course with instruction from the NCOs that were on this attack, brilliant just brilliant, hard on us but I know why. Thanks to the para lads that got us on the ball.
Legendary men and peerless regiment. We are very fortunate to have men like these wearing the coveted maroon beret.I just hope political correctness doesn’t ruin the parachute regiment like it’s threatening others.I wonder if female recruits would have succeeded at Goose Green .That’s another argument though and one that unfairly deflects just how good these men are.The Argies weren’t trained nor good enough for any British regiment let alone the Paras. My chest fills with pride when I see these old pictures of victorious British soldiers carrying the beautiful Union Jack. The paras kicked the IRA’S ass too though they took casualties themselves without whining like the republicans. The IRA never bested the Paras in combat they just chose a cowards way and bombed them.Long live the mighty Parachute regiment and never forget all those many many great fallen men from all our much envied regiments!

Everything about this screams H was a micromanaging insecure poor leader. The award of the VC has been used to nullify any criticism but the reality is that he was a bad leader in battle.
Totally disagree, he was a Colonel for cripes sakes...they don't make someone a Colonel who isn't the best of the best to lead. He lead by example and paid the ultimate price.
@@onajourney2072 He was a Lt Col and his poor battlefield management and leadership meant 2 Para were denied mission command. There was no flexibility in the plan and he micromanaged everything. At one point directing even section level engagements while ignoring his Coy Comdrs who were trying to use their initiative and exploit gains they’d made. He was quite frankly, a disaster.
@@onajourney2072 I’ve been a soldier longer than him, saw more combat than him, and did more tours than him. Listen to what Neame and the others say. Jones failed to take advice from his coy comdrs, lost all momentum, lost the plot, lost his life. Had Keeble not taken over and Jones had remained in charge then he’d also have lost the battle. Phil Neame was the only 2 Para company commander not to be rewarded with a medal.
@@mindyourownbusinessfatty Why was this, do you think? He did get MiD though
What a honest humble guy, great to listen too thank you both.
I could listen to Maj Phil Neame all day long. What a fantastic officer.
I purchased and read Phil Neames book. What an outstanding leader. Would have loved to have served under his command. Ex Green Jacket here.
What a pleasure to listen to. His book, Penal Company, is also worth reading.
incredible interview & insight by Phil Neame into his Battalions brave actions during the Falklands war.
Outstanding brave brave men...many only 17/18 yrs old....
Awesome unit fought 2 battles down there
Great bloke & top interview, you would just give your all for Phil Neame in battle.
Absolute 1st class COY CO by all accounts..
Thank you.

the best major ever
So good
Fascinating history which deserves a far better presentation. Poor interviewer, poor sound and poor graphics.
I believe Phil Neame joined the Paras from the RAF Regiment. Comes across as an exceptional leader.
Anonymous coward.
How dare you even comment on valour whilst cowering behind a fake name!
True and then after the Faulklands went on to become Lt Col of 10 Para.
He learnt the best leadership from the Paras though.
Incredible

The Sea Harriers won the war winning air superiority, without that we would have been smashed
It was a bloody brave action and I salute the Paras but I still think GG could have been by passed Thompson was right the goal was Stanley
He wasn’t given an option. He was ordered to capture Goose Green. An insane decision by the Tory government of the day.
It was but H Jones didn't want all the bootnecks to have first choice of objectives !
I think the order to take GG was from London I think it was an error it could have been left to wither on the vine when stanley was taken @@karlv2876
