@Greyson Van I really appreciate your reply. I got to the site through google and I'm waiting for the hacking stuff now. Looks like it's gonna take quite some time so I will get back to you later with my results.
In 1959 my family traveled from Chicago to see our family in LA. It was the only way to go! I remember the Burma Shave signs too. Now it's on my bucket list to re ride Route 66! Thanks for the history!
I'm from India and I've always wondered about Route 66 cuz it's been mentioned in many American shows and movies. Thank you so much for the short and great explanation and a brief history about route 66.
It's interesting that a lot of Indians have bought up all those cool old motels along Rt.66 and have restored and reopened them, with ridiculously low room rates. Nice that they're keeping that nostalgia alive!
There is also a chunk section in Barstow off the 15n freeway. All of main street is route 66. I've only followed it from barstow to victorville just to get away from all the traffic. Really amazing highway to drive on.
Most of old US-66 in CA is SR 66 and open to traffic. The exceptions are the stretch running through the Marine base at Barstow (controlled access since 9/11) and the Colorado River crossing coming into the state (if you're taking the Oatman alignment in western AZ you can cut through the reservation straight into Needles - if you do, top your tank up at the tribal-owned Thalypo gas station). Also, the various alignments through LA are all open to (and full of) traffic but have various route numbers.
when I was 5 we left KS. and drove to CA. on RT. 66. My parents never told me' You are on the Famous Mother Road" it was just a road then. we drove it all at once, my dad only stopping for naps. It was a long drive and I remember all the roadside attractions and billboards and seeing Indian children and teepees being depicted on everyone. I am so glad for that road trip and I have always had the travel bug, in June I visited my 50th state!
For 22 years I had a vacation home about 20 minutes from Oatman, Az. I used to drive that section of 66 over Sitgreaves Pass a lot since it was probably the most beautiful stretch of Route 66 and made for a nice afternoon drive.
I will be driving a small portion of Route 66 in Illinois next week from Pontiac to Springfield. Did you have any problems following the historic route between these two cities?
Wow! This is a great video. Thank you! I drove over the road for a few years, and have been on these highways many times - I was always curious about Route 66. I've been on parts of the old highway and wondered about the Glory Days of it. I think I'm going to have to do a road trip in my car and take it from start to finish.
My father Bill Swan made a lot of iconic fiberglass statues which are placed along Route 66 some of which are in new short Amazon book for only 14.99 called "The man behind the mufflerman ".
I just got back from a trip to California and the Grand Canyon, the second time in my life I've made such a trip, and it was only late into the trip that I realized we were basically more or less following route 66. I live in central Illinois near I 55, and my mom played the song Route 66 a lot, so I already knew a bit about Route 66 but it was one of the unexpected cool things about this trip that I ended up running smack into the history of Route 66.
For those who don’t know, it was John Steinbeck’s 1940 book The Grapes of Wrath that coined the term “The Mother Road” “66 is the path of a people in flight, refugees from dust and shrinking ownership, from the desert's slow northward invasion, from the twisting winds that that howl up out of Texas, from the floods that bring no richness to the land and steal what little richness is there. From all of these the people are in flight, and they come into 66 from the tributary side roads, from the wagon tracks and the rutted country roads. 66 is the mother road, the road of flight.”
During the GREAT DEPRESSION. it was the way to CA, where there were farms and food. Now, it's part of Route 40 Also. People loved the BOBBY TROUP song. He was with JULIE LONDON and HACK WEBB the show EMERGENCY which they were in, may have been a factor for starting EMTs..firefighters connecting with ambulance
I just watched this video and I actually started to get a little bit emotional. I remember seeing the first Cars movie when it came out and had the privilege of getting it on DVD. For many years as a kid, I could not watch the flashback montage of Radiator Springs without shedding a tear or two, and I have Our Town by James Taylor to thank for that; I think I even have a vague memory of bursting into ugly tears in the cinema due to how nostalgic the song is. The song's nostalgically wistful atmosphere was about this very thing: Highway 66 being replaced by the interstate highway system and the freeway corridors of I-55, I-44, I-40, I-15, and I-10 completely bypassing the multitudes of small towns and suburbs of larger cities that sprung up along the routing by as much as several dozen miles. On top of this, it reflects on the paradigm shift in the lifestyles of the residents of these towns for the worse due to the economic annihilation the freeway system wrought upon these areas since the clientele their businesses relied on to stay in the black was diverted away.
Living in Tulsa, I've heard about the route all my life. Been up both ends of 44 between St Louis and OKC hundreds of times but only last year, had I ventured west on 40 beyond OKC. That trip we went to Phoenix and saw a side of this beautiful country id never seen before! Absolutely amazing... And also, can't leave my comment without mentioning some of our favorite stops on the route: Redmon's candy factory, and one of my personal favorites, Cline's Corner!
Just did the section from Needles to Barstow, parallel to Interstate 40, coming back home from Arizona. Nothing like open road single lane American blacktop.
Just drive from Tulsa through OKC on I-40. Ran parallel Route 66. Pulled off once or twice just so I could say I was on Route 66. Drive all the way to the Big Texan in Amarlllo to have a small steak dinner just to say I've been there. Drove through New Mexico and looped north to Santa Fe. I've driven from Santa Monica eastward through Barstow to Oatman and Arizona. Wonderful road to match with the history.
The "Route 66" TV show does still have a lot of influence on the highway's popularity. Plus, there's a lot of history, as you outline. I live in Albuquerque. Central Av. is the main route through the city, and it is also Route 66. It's a big deal here.

Yes, the coming of freeways was bitter sweet. Now many of the stops are boring with the same chain gas stations and businesses. Some places are actually trying to change that now though.
Yes. Wally's is a new stop in Pontiac, IL. HUGE place. A little different than most truck stops, and embraces Route 66. Rumor has it that they are opening a few more along the route.

Nice video -but Route 66 heads west on Adams Street in Chicago, not Jackson. Jackson Blvd., a block south and parallel to Adams, is the final stretch eastbound. And one can still travel former Route 66 alignments without interruption except for a brief stretch in the southwest suburbs of Chicago where I-55 was built over the old roadway.
