I've had a fretted U5 for a couple of years now. It's not perfect, but for the price, I don't think you can do better. I like that the J bridge pup is silent, really rare in a bass anywhere near this price. I just bought a fretless U5 to start working on my fretless technique before Joaquín Marco of Marco Guitars & Bass finishes my Marcústico around the end of February 2025. 100% agree about Mustangs.
So, curious, how does the 5 string LTD short scale rank, in your estimation? I have the Gretsch 4 string you mentioned and it is fun. My LTD is used but its just easy for me at my advanced age and frail stature to pick up for a quick noodle. But I suspect horrible as a short scale bass. But maybe the best bass is the one you grab most often ...Thoughts??
The best bass IS the one you grab most often, truly. Art doesn't get made while hanging on the wall. I got to try one that had been modified with better tuners to try to help with neck dive and it was still rather unbalanced, but it played and sounded fine. Definitely wouldn't be one I'd go after personally, but if you need a 5-string short scale, there aren't too many other options other than the Ibanez ones. I think 5-string short scale off the shelf is unlikely to impress and I would rather recommend 4-string options instead, which are more plentiful and generally better.
It's nice to have something that ticks all the boxes, but at this price point it's hard to pass up what you get just because of a cosmetic you don't even look at when you play IMO. Function over form for me at least.

If sire could sort out the headstock i'd probably buy one as shallow as that sounds
