Lumix is absolutely one of the best brands for photos too, just so underrated.
I shoot both S1R and S1, both stills and video.
    Congrats on a great choice!

May I ask you about the 65:24 aspect ratio setting in both the S1R and S1? (I didn’t find answers in the manual.)
When set to the 65:24, does the electronic viewfinder also change to a 65:24 aspect ratio?
Also, for the S1, does the “higher resolution” setting still function for the 65:24 setting?
(Sorry I’m unclear on the Panasonic terminology…I’m looking for a digital panoramic camera, and I’m hoping the S series is the solution.)
      Thank you for your help!

@@TrilobitesRTasty "When set to the 65:24, does the electronic viewfinder also change to a 65:24 aspect ratio?"
Yes, you see directly the right aspect ratio on the screen and EVF.
"Also, for the S1, does the “higher resolution” setting still function for the 65:24 setting?"
      No, only 3:2, 4:3, 1:1 and 16:9.

S1R is the state of the art camera. Not only from stunning image quality, but from "user experience", handling, build quality, menu system - everything is perfect. And autofocus is good.... and it obviously depends on the lens you use, with native S lens I had a 95/100 nailed razor sharp auto-focused images... You could buy a manual gear shift Ferrari and complain about it, but don't know how to use it. Sometimes the "problem" is behind the camera....
*Especially ironic to read that kind of people who had never used it, but don't like it*
If someone use it and don't like it could be fair, but most negative came from just negative people with limited experience of any kind.

Made the same switch myself with an S1 & S1R. Have a few tips I've found, but maybe you already know these. For AF, when set to Continuous, look under the red Camera setting and select AF Custom Setting. There are 4 user settings you can set up for sensitivity, stickiness, and tracking. I've played around with that and the AF now works well enough for me to shoot my son's highs school soccer games. Another feature I found useful is under the blue wrench then the second camera down. If you are looking just at the back monitor, the settings are for the monitor only. To change the viewfinder settings, you have to look through the viewfinder and the options switch to viewfinder settings! Having LVF luminance set to auto brightens everything up in dark shooting situations. My favorite thing about the S1R/S1 are the L-mount lenses. All the options from Lumix and Sigma are great!

I have a few Panasonic bodies, the S5,S5 Mkii the G9 and G95. The thing that I enjoy about their bodies are the way they are laid out, so easy to use, Panasonic updated the auto focus on the S5 MKII and it is a major improvement over the S5, also I enjoy the range of Sigma glass for L mount, they have been updating their lenses so they are specific to mirrorless l mount and Sony bodies.

Yo! I am a full-time wedding videographer and Panasonic user. I absolutely love the S1 and S5.
For film, I stick to manual focus mostly because the autofocus isn't so reliable for video. However, for photo, I actually find the Panasonic S-series autofocus totally reliable. I use autofocus for photos 100% of the time. I don't know where your troubles are, but I find that the autofocus settings I use for photo is "One area +human detection" and I make sure that the square is somewhere near the middle and near humans.. Sometimes when switching from horizontal to vertical photos, the square will be in a bad spot and the photo will be out of focus because the square is over a random spot on the floor or background.
    Hope this helps!

I shoot fuji as an amateur, considering getting the s1 for my manual focus glass. I keep my fuji's for low profile shooting and retro user experience (ss dial, exp comp dial, aperture dial etc). I like that the s1 has so many customization options and that it feels hefty. When I see it reminds me of a d700 i used some time ago

  • @jbradleyhorn

I shoot a Leica SL, which is similar. Both the SL and new SL2-S only use contrast detection autofocus. I'm pretty sure that the Lumix sensors are the same, as those are companion brands of sorts. This means that you do not have the faster phase detection autofocus with that sensor. I use my SL for concert work mostly where I'm shooting manual lenses and manually focusing. They work great, and I've actually gotten usable images at 50,000 ISO, and that's on a body that was first put out in 2015. Really, really impressive. And you are right, the color science built into the Leica/Lumix bodies is awesome. You just have to deal with autofocus that is lagging behind the industry at this point.

Do you think that it's possible to see in the future update hybrid AF also in S1R body? It's a masterpiece camera. I've it already 3 years, after switching from Nikon D850 and I'm loving it with every moment we spend together. Update to hybrid AF would be just astonishing in S1R. This great, just need some practice and feeling to work with, after that you will get amazing shots with Panasonic colors and look 💪

I decided for Panasonic for photos. The thing is they put EVERYTHING in their bodies. Besides being very competitive in photography, their cameras always contain all of the video features that usually cost extra money in other brands.
People will say Lumix is for video just because it supports dozens of codecs and has a V-log. How about highres photo, possible handheld? How about 1.5s preburst in RAW? How about insane stabilization, no AA filter for extra detail in photos, focus stacking, 6k photo and other insane features? I mean, R3 doesn't even have a preburst!
But the biggest issue is Panasonic can't sell themselves for photography. All of their marketing, influencers, ambassadors, everybody does video. Noone is propagating photography. So yeah, people then assume it's for videographers only. The good thing is Panasonic is so bad at promoting photography they have to give people free stuff. I bought my S5II + 20-60 with free 50/1.8 and free 85/1.8 which are both really good lens. And they have to do this to get people on board for photography.
Honestly I was shooting Canon, Fuji and Nikon and I finally found myself in Panasonic. Compared to everything, I didn't honestly see I had worse AF performance or anything, but I have better lens options and much more features for overall everything, photo and video.

  • @DidierMOULINPhotography
    @DidierMOULINPhotography 7 місяців тому

    I remember I sold my D850 for the S1R
Not for the camera nor the brand itself.
The mirror less Nikon was Z6 and 7 by that time. Single slot memory card and bad AF killed the game.
Why the S1R? Because of L mount … and Leica APO lenses which are far superior compared to Af-S Nikon lenses.
Next is that I’m still using Nikon when AF is needed over image quality.
Now I have the S5iiX the AF has been improved

Lumix is an underrated brand, I have been shooting with Lumix for years. I currently shoot with the S5 and the S1H. The auto focus isn't great with Lumix, but that may be changing in the near future. I just hope they have a software update for the current line of S cameras. you should check out the Ordinary Filmmaker's video about the auto focus, ua-cam.com/video/O1NxU1KiB3I/v-deo.html

I'm open to something new if mirrorless can model after a feature set of a D3/$ build. The Action sports, Press, I've used Panasonic back in the day to test against the Canon S95, S120 PowerShot mini's. They were brilliant then so I can only imagine now.

So basically you switched because Nick uses Panasonic. If you already owned a set of professional Nikon glass you only needed to buy the body. Don't pretend the S1R is somehow a better camera than the Z9. S1R uses contrast AF so there's a good reason why the AF isn't great , especially for a wedding photog shooting in dark reception halls. The Z9 will run circles around the Panny.
