That huge crane they are using, was built by Levingston Shipbuilding, then used by Sun Shipbuilding to equip the ship that was used to try and recover a Russian nuclear submarine in the 70's. That ship was built in Chester, Pennsylvania. See "Project Azorian".
This project will take years to complete. Damage will have to be documented. The commuters that travel this route everyday will suffer until the bridge is rebuilt.

You can argue that the man in the position isn't the right one for the job (I'm not - I don't know enough about it), but you _do_ need someone. If everyone went at it like a bull at a gate, it wouldn't be _efficiently_ done, and probably not safely either. The mechanisms for choosing and retaining politicians, of course, can always be improved.

Bridges with pillars have to be built out fairly symmetrically from the supports (otherwise they tip over), until the segments meet.
