  • The Murania AM Radio Kit uses well made materials and is a joy to build. Designed and Sold by the Four State QRP Group, this Made in USA kit is an amazing introduction to the radio building hobby.

Features I like about this radio kit:
Unique "Pittsburgh" method for soldering components on a PCB.
The PCB is clearly marked and can be built by using it alone.
PDF Instructions are very easy to understand.
    Made in USA.
Customizing the circuit is easily done.
    Prompt delivery.
Reception is good for locals and some semi locals.
    Tuning LED.
    Runs on a 9V battery.
    Simple controls.
    Attractive enclosure.
If your missing parts they are easily reached and will dispatch them quickly.
Features that could be improved or added:
Increase the depth of the enclosure by a half inch. Will help with battery placement. (though it may only be me)
Include extra components to perform customization of the existing circuit.
Overall, the price of the kit is more then most, but you are supporting a group of folks based here in the USA. The kit is so unique that you will take pride in the finished product and enjoy explaining how it works to others :)
    Thank you for watching.

Dear Todderbert Sir, I write this post from India. I always had an affinity for radios even though I was born in 1990's when satellite television took my country by storm. It was a wonderful surprise finding your channel dedicated to radios. God spede you sir.

Awesome kit. Love the civil defence markings. That is what I loved about vintage radios. Now I want one of those to build. Thanks for the video. Good job. ☺

The kit's creator David Cripe amateur call sign is NM0S which actually in the abbreviation for a transistor! Love that. *"A FET (Field Effect Transistor) is a voltage controlled device where its current carrying ability is changed by applying an electronic field. A commonly used type of FET is the Metal Oxide Semiconductor FET (MOSFET). MOSFET are widely used in integrated circuits and high speed switching applications"*

This is cool. Though I'd like to see a "breadboard" style model so I can do this as a little project with some kiddos without an iron

An inexpensive little tool that you might find helpful when soldering, desoldering, and making accurate bends is an ESD safe Beau Tech soldering tool having forked and reamer ends. Got mine decades ago in engineering school and it has been invaluable. Really enjoying your kit testing and evaluations. Keep up the great work.

Love this kind of video review. It seems amazingly that electronic kit building is having a huge revival in the past 5-7 years. Have you ever considered buying a vintage unbuilt Heathkit and doing the build on video for review? Thanks.

@@watershed44 I don't have a good setup for overhead recording as I work. There is a tripod in front of me ;) I would love to build some of those Heathkits. I also have a CW transceiver that needs to be done..that could be a future episode. Also a collectible Archer AM radio kit was donated to the channel by Chuck.

I actually built a mid 70s (75-76) 8 transistor AM radio ArcherKit from RS ! I used that thing forever and it was a very good receiver too!
It didn't break but I lost it when my family moved across country back in the early 80s....Miss that thing! The amazing thing was it was very good quality...something you didn't always expect from RS.

@@watershed44 I built a very similar Graymark 8 transistor kit back in high school in the early 70s. Our teacher wanted built by schematic only as that's the way to learn. Very good performer as we had good alignment equipment in the shop. Also built a AA5 tube radio as well.

I just went to their website....and the kit is 'Temporarily Out Of Stock'. Looks like I'll have to wait. I got a kick out of the Civil Defense logo - and the CONELRAD markings on the tuning dial. 'CONELRAD - 620 and 1240!' CONELRAD was replaced by the Emergency Broadcast System in 1964.

Nice unit I went to there website they are out of stock. when they get more in I am going to purchase
I looked at some other kits they were out of stock this tells me they sell well and kit building is coming back.
I do miss the days when you could get Heathkits! they still sell one model $150.00 it does
have a variable tuning capacitor but $150.00 is high priced.

Wow I sorely miss HeathKits. They have actually returned to business but their selection is very limited, however they claim eventually they will expand and produce amateur and SW radio kits. I hope. I could never get enough of walking into the local HeathKit store in Frazier PA back in the late 70s and 80s as a child and drooling over all the cool electronics and amateur radio transceiver kits! The catalog was just as amazing...

I'm astounded by the performance of that radio! I had one of those "boys radios" from Japan when I was a kid and growing up in a suburb of NYC, I could only pick up three stations with all those 50KW "flamethrowers" around me. I'm really impressed to the point that I will order one when it's back in stock. One thing that perplexes me is the variable capacitor. This one has four alignment screws. I've only seen two on an AM only set so I wonder what the other two are used for?

    • @todderbert
      @todderbert  4 роки тому

I know the variable capacitor had to have a bunch of extra legs removed so my guess is this part is used in other radio applications. Also the radio does use an IC(TA7642), so it contains more than one transistor :)
