i do work on these boat's conveyor belts... i took the Clark from Two Harbors to Sault Ste. Marie to do repairs on the inner loop belt... awesome experience
LakeBoatChaser I was just on the Burns Harbor on Tuesday night doing repairs on their inner loop... got some great pictures wish I could post them on here
I notice on the older straight deckers that on bow section that a pole stick out in front? What is the purpose of the pole? Thank you and Seasonal Greetings to you and your family and friends.
Martin Mcmullen the pole referred to as the steering pole is used for lining up the ship on a distant object to keep them on course. Seasons greetings to you as well!
The forward cabin boats are slowly being scrapped and replaced with boats with aft cabins aka a sternwinder on the Great Lakes. When they Lay up, the ballast tanks are pumped out and cleaned, cargo holds are washed thoroughly and any mechanical maintenance is conducted. At times they will do basic maintenance anywhere from cable replacement all the way to complete engine overhauls.

Christian Leathers it was a forward ended weekend. I can’t control what comes through the locks, thanks.
Lots of these ships are still in service
The only ones that aren't in service is the Cason J. Callaway which is in lay-up, and the Cedarglen which got scrapped in 2019 I believe.
I used to watch all these come into the Duluth harbor!

Nice video, but the most boring is the sound of the shutter release of the camera.
