- Bhaiya Ganpatrao, alias "Sughar-piya", (1852-1920) was a member of the Gwalior royal family and known for pioneering the harmonium as an accompanying instrument. He was a member of the Gwalior gharana school of classical music. Bhaiya Ganpatrao was born to Jayajirao Scindia of the Gwalior princely family. He was the brother of Jiwajirao Scindia. He studied with Sadiq Ali Khan of Kirana Gharana and later with Bande Ali Khan and Inayat Hussain Khan, both students of Haddu Khan of Gwalior Gharana. In the late-19th Century and early-20th Century, Ganpatrao was the "greatest name" associated with the harmonium. He popularized the instrument and developed its Thumri-ang.
Like Govindrao Tembe, Ganpatrao is credited with establishing the harmonium as an instrument for Hindustani Classical music. Consequently, he had an enormous impact on many musicians whom he taught. Ganpatrao was a prolific composer and used the mudra "Sughar-piya. Faiyaz Khan began singing thumris publicly because of Ganptrao's influence. Bismillah Khan adopted some of Ganpatrao's techniques in his Shehnai playing. The sarod maestro Hafiz Ali Khan, father of Amjad Ali Khan, learned dhrupad and thumri from Ganpatrao. He also taught Bashir Khan of Indore and Girija Shankar Chakrabarty. He also taught Jaddanbai, the mother of Bollywood actress Nargis.

I had heard alot about Bhaiya Ganpat Rao along with another Maestro in Bihar, from My Gr father Pandit Shri Abhay Narayan Mallick of Darbhanga Mallick gharana.
He used to say - ठुमरी मे भैया गंपत् राव ग्वालियर और बाबू सोनू सिंह ऑफ गया ( जो की दरभंगा के राज बहादुर महाराज बिश्वेश्वर् सिंह के गुरु भी थे) की तूती बोलती थी। कोई तवाइफ् Tanpura उठाने को तैयार नही होती थी इनके ठुमरी के बाद।
बाब्बू सोनी सिंह के बेटे भी वैसी ही सधी हुई पेटी बजाते थे। पर वो आरा (बिहार) मे बस गए और साधु बन के रहे। उन्होंने शादी नही की। A few times he accompanied my Nanaji on Dhrupad in Patna after alot persuasion and request.
And a magic he weaved. He didn't follow on Harmonium but played all along with Chhand and Layakari on Harmonium. It was almost a Jugalbandi.

My Nanji used to say - Babbo Sony singh was identified by a Cage with Teetar inside in Right hand and a Belgian Rifle in his Left Hand.
He was a Royal and Akhadd Musician of his times and had a massive Fan Following.
Bhaiya Rao's name is always clubbed with Babboo Sony Singh - Please check if you missed him in any reference.

जानकारी बहुत अच्छी दी है, लेकिन जो हार्मो.का रेकॉर्डिंग सुनाया है वह जानकारी के बिल्कुल विपरीत लगता है । गणपत राव जी का उपलब्ध नहीं है तो उसी ढंग से कुछ हद तक बजाने वाले पं गोविंदराव टेंबे थे, उनकी अच्छी रेकॉर्डिंग उपलब्ध है, तो उनका रेकॉर्डिंग समाविष्ट किया होता तो अच्छा होता ।
