- Viola Mae Wilkerson (December 30, 1939 - May 6, 2009) was an American pop singer, best known for the 1979 UK Singles Chart number 8 hit and US U.S. Hot Dance Club Play number 52 hit, "Gonna Get Along Without Ya Now". Other hits included further covers of the songs, "Both Sides Now" (number 35 UK) (1986), and "If You Could Read My Mind" (number 2 U.S. Hot Dance Club Play) (1980).
Wills' first major break into the mainstream came in 1979 with her cover version of "Gonna Get Along Without Ya Now" (the song's release date was May 14, 1979) which started a string of dance hits. All three of the songs landed Wills in the Guinness Book of British Hit Singles. In 1982, her cover of "Stormy Weather" peaked at number 4 in the U.S. Hot Dance Club Play chart. Later in 1983, the newly formed record label RVA (Robert Viola Ashmun), released a number of songs, including "Wall", "Space" and "If These Walls Could Speak".

That's one of the greatest arrangements of the Disco era,even though the original was just as great.

Always loved this song when it was on the radio. Contrary to relationship message in the lyrics, the feelings evoked by the melody always felt upbeat & uplifting to me. They never played it enough for me at the time, and then it was gone from the airwaves. Comprehending that was over 40 years ago, lovely to hear it again which now evokes...where did those years go?!!

I was working for Ariola records when this came out and the whole label and Artists went on a music convention for the weekend, i still have a photo of myself and Viola dancing, she was lovely.

Viola had it all! Amazing voice.....amazing beauty....great stage presence ! She should have been a much more major star.......the recording artists that hit it big did not have 1/2 her talent.
But producers liked them young. Evelyn Champagne King and Brenda Lee are prime examples. She was 39.
This was about her 3rd coming, according to what i read' about miss Wills, she had several children, the first music Barry Whyte produced solo was sung by her in 1967, she would be in her early 80's if she was still around.

If you think the vocals haven't been treated in the studio then you don't know how it works. In fact I would think something very much like auto tune was used. There's absolutely nothing wrong with autotune and pretty much every artist uses it.
