    Thank you for this video! I've recently just discovered about different piano grade levels (ABRSM, RCM and Trinity) and I am trying the exercises alone for self-learning. Your channel really helps! I wish I could have a piano teacher soon...

      I learned the viola when I was younger. At about grade 5, you have to learn 3-octave scales, which means moving your whole hand into a different position halfway through. The major scales were fine, but the harmonic/melodic minors I'd inevitably end up changing key on the way back down. Apparently they don't award points for originality!

    Is it worth doing all scales and arpeggios from grade 1 to grade 4 if I've been out of piano for 20 years and going straight back to grade 4 level. I've been catching up with sight reading since last 6 months.

    • @JulianLambert
      @JulianLambert  9 місяців тому

      Knowing our scales is an absolute fundamental of instrumental fluency. Whether you choose to follow the steps given in an exam structure or devise your own system for learning all majors and minors in the 12 keys, it doesn't much matter. A practice diary may be helpful.

    Are these quavers that are being played? Is the count 1 and 2 and 3 and 4 and 1 and 2... etc?

    • @JulianLambert
      @JulianLambert  3 роки тому +2

      Yes. For these exercises assume the notes are notated as quavers (quarter notes).

    • @pauljohnbodie5631
      @pauljohnbodie5631 3 роки тому

      @@JulianLambert Thanks. Do you have to play them that way, and at that tempo, for the exam?

  • @matthewphilip1977
    @matthewphilip1977 Рік тому +1

    Why are we asked to play scales evenly, with none of the accents that feature in the various time signatures (2/2; strong weak. 3/4; strong weak weak; 4/4; strong weak medium weak. etc)? When we come across scale passages, or sections thereof, in actual music, they are divided up by bar lines and we are to play them accordingly. It seems we are practicing something we never actually play.

    • @JulianLambert
      @JulianLambert  Рік тому +1

      Good question Matthew. I practice scales with various accents, dynamics and articulations but for an exam ...

    • @JulianLambert
      @JulianLambert  2 роки тому +1

      You can jump straight to whichever grade you wish but be aware that G5 theory is a prerequisite to G6 and above practical exams. Hope it goes well for you.

    Hi Julian, one question for "a melodic minor" ... you play a f# when going up.... you say harmonic up and natural down, you do this with the d-melodic-minor (but not with the a-melodic-minor) ? Please help me, thank you !!

    • @JulianLambert
      @JulianLambert  2 роки тому

      Thx for getting in touch. What I meant to say is 'melodic minor going up and natural minor coming down'. So, in most classical music syllabuses we might play A, B, C, D, E, F#, G#, A ascending, with all white keys (no accidentals) descending.
