This is an improvisation about the theme used by Tchaikovsky in his famous "Variations on a Rococo theme".
Played acoustically without any electronics.

Gives off the same vibe as a soloing guitar player instead of the typical stuck-up sadness face most string players give off. I appreciate this as a fellow cello player

The Rubato here is very strong. therefore it doesn't really SWING, a prerequisite of JAZZ? Maybe not; after all, Bill Evans, certified jazz pianist, often used rubato, and didn't swing per se. Somebody is tapping a toe here. Braun? If so, it swings! At least in that portion.
@Gustav Mahler I am older! 82. However Jazz hasn't stopped swinging.
15 cellists disliked this video because they’re technique isn’t as good as Stephens
as a beginner im most shocked at how he is not afraid of snapping strings !!!hahaha my worst fear of string instruments!
Snapping strings is rare on the cello. It's only ever happened to me while tuning and in those instances, they were either old or cheap strings.
@@freemanmoser2829 thanks! yeah tuning for beginner is absolute nightmare...I wear ski goggles just in case it may snap and mark my face...hahahah

Don't know why you set the title as "jazz cello" there was no jazz articulation. Might as well been classical cello improv.

That was a special performance from Stephan for us. We are a cello festival with mostly classical cellists and a big goal fpr us is to combine the two styles. We especially asked him to do a performance where he uses jazz elements in a classical piece.
Some of the rhythmic, melodic elements obviously pertain to jazz. What exactly constitutes "jazz articulation?"
