  • 00:00 King Edward III's Castle
    The team investigate King Edward III's Queenborough Castle at the mouth of the Thames, the last medieval royal palace. They explore whether the castle's purpose was defence, or to protect the royals from the plague.
    48:08 Dungannon Castle
    The team visits Northern Ireland to locate one of the most important sites in Anglo-Irish history - a hilltop castle above the city of Dungannon, home of the powerful O'Neill dynasty, whose story culminates in the hugely significant flight of the Earls. The team is joined by Colm Donnelly, Hiram Morgan, Paul Logue, and Jim O'Neill.
    01:35:00 Empress Matilda's Fortress
    Is this the English Empress Matilda’s castle from The Anarchy? A peaceful waterside field beside the oldest bridge over the higher reaches of the River Thames in Oxfordshire poses the perfect setting for an assault. Time Team set out to uncover what looks like the remains of a large medieval castle buried under the grass. Could this be all that remains of a long-lost fortress built during one of the bloodiest episodes of English history?

    Edward III was the winner of the Battle of Crecy. It stands to reason that some of his works would be influential to future kings.

    Dark Ages? Matilda - ok, maybe. Edward III or XVI cent? Nah. (I know there are people who use that terminology broadly, but by the time of the O'Neil castle, the Renaissance was already over in Italy! And 14th century, while very grim, was well into, if not past, the High Middle Ages.

      They have a full time job during the week also doing archeology so F/S/Su are the only days they can do the show. If they don't finish something, they have to leave it as is. They have a strict permit schedule.

    1300 was not the dark ages, it would more accurately be called a part of the Middle Ages to late Middle Ages.

    • @SoloAdvocate
      @SoloAdvocate Місяць тому +2

      @@eddygonzalez6018 Uther may be a myth, as well as Arthur but they were inspired by a semi-historical account of the native Britons defense against the Saxon incursion of Britain, along with the Angles. Though the man who inspired the tale may have been of Roman lineage, Ambrosius Aurelianus, as written about by Gildas a monk in the 6th century.
      He is considered by many to be the real King Arthur, or at least one of the many inspirations as mythical characters tend to be amalgamations of many.

      Dark ages are from the fall of western Rome in 476 and ended with the fall of Constantinople in 1453. So, 500 AD - 1500 AD is what is regarded as the dark age of Europe.

    Dark Age isn't the 14th century.

    • @Danthesane
      @Danthesane Місяць тому +17

      I imagine it depends on definition of “dark ages” as some people would define dark ages as 3rd-11th century while others might push it all the way to the beginning of the Gutenberg Press and Protestant reformation. Besides, it’s all Middle Ages, low Middle Ages, high Middle Ages, late Middle Ages, Renaissance, etc.

      @Danthesane Місяць тому +2

      @@nostromo7928 it’s a contentious topic. It’s like asking “when did Rome fall” and some people will say when Constantinople was captured by Ottomans, others would say it was when the western Romans empire fell.
