I love this series. I can’t believe it has so few subscribers or views. So much terrific information on different plants. Excellent for real gardeners who care about plants, and especially natives.

I was just thinking about Vetiver grass to make a hedge along the roadside to block some noise and dust. The main draw, for me, was the deep rooting nature of Vetiver, so imagine my surprise when I heard about this native bunch grass that also roots deep! My only worry is that it won't survive here in South Carolina. I'm right on the border of Zone 7 and 8, with very hot summers and solid rainfall here in the Piedmont Region. Winters are usually mild.

You may have noted in this video that this excellent selection is derived from one of our native species and therefore brings with it all the ability to cope well with our climate. Our experience is limited to our Mid-Atlantic and Northeastern region: grownbyoverdevest.com/retail-locator/ so, it would be best to check with some of your local garden centers, but from what we understand, it should be fine with you. If you are in doubt, you could always plant out a few trial plants in the intended position..... that would be a good way to double check that they will flourish and crat the effect you are contemplating. We are big fans of using ornamental grasses like this as screens.

@@OverdevestNurseries Thank you for your kind response. While there aren't any retailers in my region, I'll keep an eye open. I even have a large pot on the front stoop, in full sun, that I'm quite sure would love to care for a Big Bluestem!
I don't think the Black Hawk or other varieties of Andropogan would be as good as Vetiver for gully erosion remediation, but I love that it's native and hope it would do well here in the Piedmont of South Carolina.

I received this lovely plant as a Mother’s Day gift. I am really enjoying it.

What a lovely gift. and it is great to hear that it is doing well for you. Unlike some of the other older selections, this one stands up strong and sturdy and doesn't topple over. I know your plant is only one season old, but if you get a moment, it would be interesting to learn of its development and progress.

Overdevest Nurseries : I would be happy to do so. It is in the middle of a pollinator friendly garden strip that my daughter created for me.

I found this in a reduced section of a nursery last year and I sure wish I bought more! It's really a beautiful grass. It's very dark purple! Can you save the seed to start next spring?

The garden centers in our region are stocking this plant now: grownbyoverdevest.com/retail-locator/, so if you are nimble you should be able to nip in and snap up as many nice, big, healthy plants (like the ones in this video) as you need. This is an outstanding selection that is the result of a breeding program by one of America's up and coming perennial breeders (Brent Hovarth of Intrinsic Perennials). Brent has been working on perfecting improved and more colorful perennials for over 20 years. It does not come true from seed and has to be reproduced vegetatively under license.
