  • I was crawling through my local thrift store and lookie what I found. It's one of those ad video players companies send to potential business partners! I've seen these online but this is the first one I've come across in the wild so I just had to have it. Let's give it a quick demo and then tear it apart to see if we can hack it!

In some ways this is very cool, and crazy how cheap they've managed to make it, but it's also the epitome of waste. From hi-tech factory to landfill with a brief pause in between.

Yep, awesome for people like me who like to tinker but sadly most people will just end up trashing them

I remember when Vogue magazine released an issue with a built-in “Video in Print” in 2010, out of the entire circulation, only 7,000 copies of the magazine had this thing.
For a ridiculous 4 dollars, the user received a full-fledged video player in a cardboard case, with a 4-inch screen and 1 gigabyte of memory. Users were able to hack the player and record their own video files on it.

20years ago this would have been futuristic & in maximum PC advertising..hackers would be trying to get their hands on it to use as a boot screen for PC case mods 😂😂 those who know, know 🍺 .

    - The screen alone is valuable, jeez. Getting a screen like that from AliExpress is a good $30. 🤨
    - 9:05 Technically, it says the video was created in 1970, specifically January 1st at midnight (timestamp 0 per the Unix epoch). It shows 7pm on December 31st 1969 because SJM is in the Eastern timezone, thus -5 hours, so Windows is showing the compensated timestamp instead of the actual one.

I have one of these from something called "New Arconic" and it was meant to be a video mailer to stockholders to try and get them to vote on something at the stockholder meeting or something? but mine is a 256MB device with a spicy pillow battery, I soldered a USB lead with data so I could drop on different videos. It goes by alphabetical order and is honestly funny to use. I have mine set up with a bunch of TV static clips to mimic one of those "clip movie" drawn things like used to be popular on flash sites and even youtube 17-20 years ago. with of course, the very last file being a rickroll... but! I have confirmed it'll take a whole-ass episode of some anime show if you encode it correctly with handbrake. shove the res down to... 720x360 I think it is? and it'll do you just fine so long as you use one of the youtube presets as your base and work from there. just wish I wasn't so scared of removing the spicy pillow battery, else I'd have done so already. but hooking +5 directly to where that was connected will allow it to work too, the player doesn't care.

I have one of those too, mine has MICRO USB and no buttons but the motherboard looks almost identical instead off the PVP chip it has an Allwinner E200 apparently they run some kind of Linux system (maybe Melis OS AllWinners proprietary video player)that's specifically made to play MP4 files.
They usually have the following specs:
E200 chip, an Allwinner F1E200 system-on-chip with an ARM926-EJS CPU running at 470 MHz
    Hynix RAM
    Samsung Flash
    8 Ohm speaker
    LiPo battery
    Mini-USB connector
I'm wondering if other software can be flashed onto them, like emulators or some other Linux distro?
Controllers with micro usb exist so maybe with the right drivers it'll work. ?
