prune an orchard in a simple, efficient regenerative silvopasture system with goats and chickens

  • 'pick & prune' is a practice of tending the orchard that yields much more than fruit. We made this little film in the old orchard, the food forest, in late winter and late summer, when we are very much preoccupied with the trees.
It follows how we work with natural patterns within a system that elegantly meets the needs of all the contributors, most especially the fruit trees, but certainly the goats, geese, ducks, hens and chicks, not to mention songbirds, honeybees, wild pollinators, and people.
The people, naturally, are looking for continuous improvement in the system, so that less work, plenty of fruit, a thriving ecosystem, happy creatures and more orchard naps are the result. Pruning well is the heart of that project, and we hope this little film gives some insight into our practice.

I really relax when I'm watching your films! I want a goat now. I have chickens and quail. I noticed your lovely bed and need one. I hate to purchase most things but would like to know where to purchase one like that. Silly but I really like it!! This film makes me want to do more in small bits! I usually go way too fast and miss the joy sometimes!

oh my gosh i love quail. we have wild families here, i would dress like a quail fellow if i could! our bed - aha. it’s very, very old, but flatpack stores came to france and folks were ditching antiques for modern so we lucked out. i still need to build it better slats a dozen years on. are you in the us? you have an amazing antiques market there. if you must but new, buy old! i’m so glad it made you want to focus on the small things. thanks dianne.

Beautiful. I’m so curious how you get such lovely fruit. We never get plums as they’re always wormy or there are sap sucking bugs that make them shrivel. Have you encountered these problems?

not those problems specifically, but sometimes there are problems here and there. generally making sure the soil is healthy, and the tree has the conditions it needs, that helps. sometimes it takes longer to address why a tree might be stressed. you might like to look at michael phillips ‘holistic orchard’ book for ideas.
