    Companies are always going to try to influence government, at least with lobbying there is a public record of who is a registered lobbyist, and some limits on what they can do. For example, they have a max amount they can spend on a dinner or meeting with a politician. The main issue is that they are allowed to use campaign donations as leverage. From the pov of a politician, they want what will get them re elected most likely, and if the amount of money from donations for their campaign out weighs that of public distaste of them, then they will take the money. That being said, there are some lobbyists, especially smaller ones, that want there to be a ban on campaign donations being used as leverage to make lobbying more fair. All that to say, it's complicated, and I think that concluding that it is all bribery and fundamentally imoral is not a fair statement.

    • @e.d.5766
      @e.d.5766 Рік тому +2

      I think it's also worth pointing out that campaign funds don't guarantee an election win. Having more funds can definitely be an advantage, but candidates have lost elections where they had double the funds of the other candidate. If you asked the average Senator whether they would rather gain $10 million in campaign funds or 4% of voters, I'm pretty confident that the vast majority would pick the second option. Money isn't unimportant, but it's less important than voters, so it's pretty rare that a politician would support unpopular bills just because they received a donation. Generally, lobbying and campaign donations only have influence over issues that voters don't care about, mostly niche legislation relating to businesses that very few policymakers will have the expertise to actually understand, so they rely on businesses and lawyers to propose changes that the politician may decide to support or oppose. It's not "Democracy", but it isn't undemocratic either, it's democratic pluralism and - sometimes for better and sometimes for worse - it's a necessary part of representative democracy.

      Lobbying and bribery are not the same thing. If lobbying was made illegal, it would probably make passing legislation way slower and harder. You can say that it's unfair that big businesses are pretty uniquely positioned to be able to lobby politicians, but they represent large sections of the economy, large sections of employment, and it's pretty rare that an unpopular bill gets passed because of lobbying. Normally, bills proposed by businesses to politicians through lobbying pass because voters don't care about it, so it's not really undemocratic, the politician isn't going against the will of their voters. And if you think that lobbying led to an unpopular bill being passed, or a bill that hurts the average voter, point it out and campaign against it.

    Lobbying exists because a politician isn't going to be able to have an expertise in criminal law, infrastructure, economics, corporate law, etc. They rely on experts and people who regularly interact with those fields to say "This would be better if (x) policy was different", then they use their expertise to figure out what a better policy would look like, and then they propose that policy to a politician. Obviously it doesn't always work out like this, there's clearly risk of corruption here, but lobbying isn't really some evil, undemocratic bribe.

    • @billclinton1235
      @billclinton1235 Рік тому +2

      There's a grey area but it's generally done way more harm than good. Especially in America where corporations have so much power

    • @e.d.5766
      @e.d.5766 Рік тому

      @@billclinton1235 There's a term called "lobbying as legislative subsidy", which basically argues that, especially on a state level where budget and staffing is smaller, it is necessary for lobbyists to propose largely written bills for policymakers in order for them to make progress on a variety of issues. This is pretty much an inevitability of the federalist system, and it isn't, in theory, a bad thing. For example, I would guess you would probably be ok with a trade union lobbying their state government to pass a bill the union has had written that would further workers rights. Using the "lobbying as legislative subsidy" lens, it seems likely that a lot of bills across the nation are proposed by lobbyists, and that the contributions made by policymakers in the actual wording of these bills may be small, but a lot of these bills are reasonable and popular, having bipartisan support within local, state, and, often, national government. Many of these are bills that pretty much nobody will have heard of, barely anyone will oppose, and are generally positive. But the lobbyist-backed bills that get media coverage are the ones that are contentious and seen as harmful, the ones that oil companies have drafted and convince politicians that the economic benefit is greater than the environmental costs, not the ones that a business proposes to make it easier for them to provide their service or a trade union proposed to protect their workers or some citizen with too much time and money proposes to make something better for individuals. I'd also argue that there aren't really many examples of obviously unpopular, harmful legislation being passed because of lobbying: the most common example is Disney extending copyright law, but I don't think that's actually very unpopular and it's almost certainly beneficial to the US media industry and economy.
      All that is to say, I don't think lobbying has actually done more harm than good, I think it's just that the examples of harm are the only ones people care to notice. And, despite how much I just fluffed up lobbying, I don't think it's all good and I definitely think there has been significant corruption and continues to be risk of further corruption. I just think that the narrative that corporations control America through lobbying is wrong and harmful. Lobbying is ultimately just a way for experts to propose bills to policymakers, it undoubtedly allows for a higher volume of functional policy across a diverse range of areas to be passed per year. Even though it is flawed, it doesn't squander democracy, and it's important that people are still aware that their vote matters.
