STORY BEHIND THE SONG
The idea: A couple months ago the 5 of us were gathered round a piano prepping for a video shoot scheduled for that day. We were brainstorming ideas when one of us (can't remember who!) got off task and starting flicking a piano string. Since all of us are poster children for ADHD, it wasn't long before ALL of us had joined in -- banging out a beat, plucking a string, or hitting keys. The brainstorming meeting had been sabotaged beyond repair, but another music video idea was born!
The song: We went through several song possibilities before landing on "What Makes You Beautiful" by One Direction. We like this song because it's catchy and the music, lyrics, and video passed our "sesame street" test (meaning family friendly). We thought about the ramifications of taking on a teenybopper boy band tune as five middle-aged married guys who are desperately holding on to their hairlines. One of us even has a son older than the guys in One Direction (we won't say who) :-) BUT you know us -- we love a good challenge! This one was so fun to write that the "challenge" part of it never was felt. We just acted like kids playing the piano and it totally worked! :-) After we figured out the main "techniques" of playing the piano unconventionally we loved experimenting with swapping out chords and throwing the structure of the song around until it clicked.
The location: Where to film? Fitting in video shoots between touring, writing, recording, editing, and spending time with family has always been a challenge. Let's be honest, even getting all 5 of us in the same place at the same time has been a challenge! We had a big sold-out show at the Sandy, Utah Amphitheater. We all determined to be at the show and film the video right on stage sometime between sound check and the performance. Sounds like a good idea right? Well...because of a lot of factors, including weather (we had a huge storm sweep in and knock everything down on stage during sound check) the only time we had to film was between the hours of 2AM - 7AM the morning of the concert. In the video at 2:30 you can see the morning light start breaking -- we literally played into the sunrise! :-)

Apparently that style (string piano) is an actual technique people do.
The more blasphemous one is when the player(s) intentionally detunes strings while a note is being played to pitch-shift it. And that too is considered a legitimate technique.

I can't remember the name, but there's a family group that does this, but I think it's 7 of them.
This probably won’t be seen, but oh well. When I was 6, my mom showed me this video and it inspired me to learn the piano. A year later, I also picked up the cello. 9 years later, I still play piano and cello competitively and as a hobby.

What I love most about them is not their talent (don't get me wrong, they are SO talented) but how much passion and how much joy they have in creating music. You can obviously see with the smiles on their faces that they love doing what they do.
I think the passion is someone’s face really shows true musicianship. With all of there videos you really see it, but it’s different every time, they are amazing. They touch people in ways they do not even know and to me that is true musicianship!

my third grade teacher showed this to my class and i immediately fell in love with wanting to learn how to play the piano. fast forward almost seven years later, i have been playing the piano for six years. thank you to my third grade teacher for doing something as simple as showing my class this video, she really changed my life.

For real! It's been so long that I've seen a Piano Guys video. I still remember it that I really really liked it back then. But like memories are, you don't exactly know how much you can trust them.
Now just through this one video that popped up in the recommendations after years, I see again why they are so special. I've watched so many videos today, and this one is the best of them all. It's just different, it tops them all. It just makes me so happy again. It's just looking into their faces making music with love one time, and it makes my day. Just makes me happy. They have that vibe that ignites your soul.
And that's just that one video. I am nervous what will happen if I now start watching all the other videos again? Will I survive? Will I be able to sleep tonight? :D

I can't stop watching this. Seriously. I'm mesmerized.
My 1st grade of elementary school music teacher used to start his classes with this video (and others from The Piano Guys and 2 Cellos) this is so nostalgic. This video inspired me to play music. This showed me that music isn't a lot of rules that you must obey, showed me that music is fun. If you know what you are doing, you can use a single piano to play a whole band

They really have a different way of inspiring people. I grew up playing the piano but I never really fell in love with it until I watched this video and I was able to see the many things just one simple piano can do! They have changed they way I view music in general.

My grandfather's funeral was today. As i was alone at the viewing with him in his coffin,crying, in a very quiet room. This song starts playing over the funeral home speakers and i stop for a moment and go.... Is-is that one direction?? And start laughing because it was the last thing i expected to hear in that moment.
The four-note pattern that Jon plays at 2:11 can be heard in the guitar solo in Don't Stop Believin' in the same key. That's cool.

Wow- I remember when I was in 3rd grade and my music class teacher played this for us. I was amazed. I loved the song then and still love it now (nostalgia). And now, as a senior in high school, I am still blown away by this. Never got a chance to comment until I was finally allowed to make my own channel, and I am glad I am able to share my experience now, only 9 years too late.

When you can playone instrument, it's not hard to make the jump to another, same underlying structure, music is music. Instruments are just a way of expressing what is already inside.
I grew up listening to a lot of these as a kid. Seeing just how long it's really been is terrifying and incredible all at once

This might be 7 years old now but I still love it to this day. It reminds me that every part of the whole is important and has it's uses. Just remember that if you are down because you feel useless or think you are a hindrance, you are not. You are important too! Don't forget even the keyboard cover has a part in this song. Typically a cover is there to stop the music, hinder the player from playing, but here is is used to accentuate the song. The song would be missing something if it wasn't present. Whether you are the keys, the strings, the mutes, the hollow wood, or even the keyboard cover you are important to the song. The song we are all living in, the story of what makes you beautiful. Never forget that.

I have listened to this song over 100 times. I listened to this when I was in high school. Now a college grad and still a huge TPG fan. This song will probably always have a role in my life. I feel like I was a fan before it was cool.
