I am 77 and I have to say people are heavier today than back then. Obese was slimmer than today. I am sometimes shocked to see how large some children are in their teens.
In my entire school in the late-60s, there was only one overweight student. He was obese by the standards of any time period. We ate all the popular sugar breakfast cereals, and washed down all the popular cookies with Hi-C and Hawaiian Punch and were quite slim.
its an iconic song. During the Winter 30 years ago, I arrived at a friend's cabin and entered the door and sang, "All the leaves are brown", the crowd inside answered, "And the sky is grey". The Phillip's daughter Chyna is/was in the singing group Wilson Phillips, 'Hold On' was their biggest hit. (Carrie and Wendy Wilson are the daughters of Brian Wilson of The Beach Boys.)
FYI… All of their instrumentation was performed by “The Wrecking Crew”, an LA based group of session musicians that played on almost every hit of the era!
If you've seen the documentary all the wrecking crew were given were the lyrics, time signature, key changes and tempo. And they banged it out before lunch. It took the actual band a week to record the vocals.
60s folk rock was pioneered the Byrds. The mamas and the pups were good friends of Roger McGuinn of the Byrds and played in the same clubs in the village… They saw the his success and soon after ended up in LA. Sidenote, the birds also pioneer psychedelia and country rock. Their footprint in 60s music was undeniable.
Before you go hating on them understand the times and the place. Mid 60's in and about San Francisco was very much a hippie free love culture. John probably drove her into Denny's arms but don't really know. John didn't hate on her after so why would I? when asked Michelle once said "Well, we were all living together and there was a very close relationship between the four of us. John and Denny were best friends; Cass was madly in love with Denny. Denny and I were having an affair. John and I were married. Cass and Denny were best friends. Yet, No, it wasn’t destructive. It definitely added an extra spark to our creativity. All the songs like “I Saw Her Again” were about our relationships. That was fuel for the fire. That’s all we could write about was what we were doing." 'Creeque Alley' maybe next? It's a song about where they lived back then. The original recording of this is interesting. 'Barry McGuire' was a popular singer back in 1963 and he knew John and Michelle Phillips. He liked 'California Dreaming' so much he recorded it for his album. John and Michell even sang on it. The amazing wreaking crew were the musicians for the recording. That flute solo didn't exist before Bud Shank gave us that improvised alto flute solo. So Lou Alder the Producer used the '63 recording for the Mamas and Papas record, on the actual record you can hear Barry just before the record starts. Check out Barry McGuire - 'Eve of Destruction' Cheers.
I live not too far from there. In August 1972, I had just been hired by Social Security to work at one of their buildings downtown. In one of the first few days after I started, I watched Mayor Schaefer give Mama Cass a key to the city. Fun to see.
I use to point out Swarthmore College to people because it's near where I live. I stopped when I found out Mama Cass didn't attend it, but was merely a convenient rhyme for John Phillips when he wrote the song, "Creeque Alley".
Cass Elliot's fans didn't care about her weight. She had one of the great voices of any genre. After the breakup, she went on to a successful solo career, where people really got to see her amazing voice. You can hear her voice featured in their song "Sing for your Supper" Whether you react to it or not, do yourself a favor and listen to it. Also in the link to the version, you can see at 1:15 of the recording that Cass shows her distaste for lip sinking by saying something to Denny Doherty while she is "singing!"
On the size issue: Around this time, one of the top models was Twiggy. She was aptly named and revered for her thin frame. Wiki says she was 5 foot 6, and weighed about 91 lbs (41 KG). Pictures of her were everywhere.
I bought the California Dreamin single for a buck when I was fourteen. This is folk rock music that pre-dated the Hippie era by a couple of years. America changed a lot between 1960 and 1970.
Listen to their song "I Saw Her Again." John Phillips wrote this song about bandmate Denny Doherty and John's wife Michelle Phillips (in the band) having an affair. John said that making them sing this song many times on stage was his revenge. Also, there is an amazing mistake in this song. Denny sang "I saw her...," but he came in too early. He paused and then sang "I saw her again..." in the proper place in the song. They all liked Denny's mistake so much that they left it in the final version.
Although it was written by John and Michelle Phillips in 1963, California Dreamin' was originally released by Barry McGuire on his album, This Precious Time, with the Mama's and the Papa's [sic] adding harmonies to the Wrecking Crew sessionists, as a courtesy to Lou Adler, who had just signed the fledgling band. Those same backing tracks were reused, with Denny Doherty on lead, and Bud Shank on flute, for their own debut album in 1965.
Happy Friday to you Diane. Mama Cass Elliot, of the Mamas and Papas, had a short solo career before her untimely death in 1974. Jim Croce is another good artist in the folk genre you should check out. He had several hits in a short time period, but he also had an untimely death. He died young in a plane crash in 1973.
John and Michelle's daughter Chynna is famous for her band "Wilson Phillips". You must hear their 1990 #1 hit "Hold On" it's very inspirational. Chynna was an actress as well in the 80s. John's other daughter MacKenzie Phillips is also a well known actress having starred in a couple sitcoms in the 70s and 90s. Michelle herself was an actress in the late 80s having been a main character in the serial drama show 'Knots Landing".
Yes, people were thinner. We can thank the processed foods overlords for this. In the 1980s clothing manufacturers adjusted clothing sizes, such that a person who might have gone from a size 10 to a size 14, would suddenly discover they had dropped back a dress size or two. They didn't, the sizes were fudged. The high end designers, those who made clothes that had no price tags on them _(if you have to ask, you can't afford it)_ didn't adjust their sizes.
A bit of trivia.....Michelle and John Phillips' daughter Chynna was one of the singers in the all girl singing group "Wilson Phillips". The other two girls were the daughters of Brian Wilson of the Beach Boys. Yes, the weight issue was very real in the 60's basically due to the model "Twiggy" who was skin and bones, but rose to become the "ideal" body for a woman back then even though that lifestyle is just, if not more than unhealthy.
@@daricetaylor737 When humans eat naturally, their body types are almost always thin. MUCH thinner than people are today. It wasn't because of one Skinny model LMAO. There are countless studies and videos about how and when body types changed due to dietary changes that occured in the 70s. Mainly because of the introduction to new types of preservatives and sweeteners like corn syrup.
This was on the Ed Sullivan show which had an orchestra for backup and used boom mics out of camera sight above the singers, all live. There is another Sullivan performance with the one lead by Michelle on Dedicated to the One I Love. She's not just the pretty one. The Beach Boy version also has John and Mackenzie Phillips, Scott Mackenzie, and Roger McGuinn. John and Scott co wrote Kokomo with the BBs.
Despite their back story, The Mamas & The Papas was not only an exceptional group but they were also pivotal for the development of that sixties particular sound that became the trademark of a whole generation, along with other artists like The Beatles, Simon & Garfunkel. Moreover, before their final act, they made an important part as co-organizers of the mythical Monterey Festival in 1967 during the “Summer Of Love”. This event marked a starting point of perhaps the most significant and prolific 3 years in Rock History that culminated with 1969 Woodstock Festival, in the middle of the hippie era. The world hasn’t witnessed such fast and drastic evolution in music ever again.
Piece of trivia: On the first recording and in early performances, Mama Cass sang "began to pray" instead of "pretend to pray" as she thought that was the correct lyric that Denny insisted as he didn't like the overt religiousness
A blast from the past. They had a great sound and were very popular. Fun fact: The daughter of John Phillips and Carney Wilson, daughter of Brian Wilson of The Beach Boys, formed a group called Wilson Phillips. Thanks for sharing and hope you have a wonderful weekend! 🙏🏼
7:47 Were people that much slimmer? Yes! There was no internet back then and cable TV only began to blossom in the late 70's. It was easy to get disgusted with what was on TV and go work outside, or work in the basement to beat the boredom. Consider that before the 1950's, before TV, people filled some or most of their free time, playing a musical instrument, or learning how to, or perfecting their dance moves. People were more active, In 1968, my 80 year old grandfather could run a ten minute mile.
Yes. People were thinner back then. Between 9 and 13 I was considered fat because I was 10 pounds heavier than most other boys my height at that age. It really made me stick out. And everyone let me know it from my classmates, to parents, and total strangers. When my mom took me shopping for clothes I had to get pants from the husky section. I hit puberty and got skinny so that shut people up. Even in the 90s when I got a beer gut ( for about an year ) people would comment on it. These days no body would bat an eye. I'm in my mid 50s and slim these days.
I heard John Phillips on a talk show. He mentioned the lyrics. In some kind of mixup the line, "and I pretend to pray." was supposed to be, "and I began to pray." He said, " I pretend to pray doesn't make any sense."
I used to think that "began" was the lyric. "Pretend" made sense to me in that he ducked into a church to get warm, pretended to pray so he wouldn't get kicked out by the preacher.
It was the height of the Haight-Ashbury period, hippies and free love and the "sexual revolution" ... I guess a lot of us back in the day just put it down to the artistic temperament and as long as they weren't fussing and fuming and trying to unalive each other, we just enjoyed the music they gave us. Cass Elliot had an amazing clear voice that soared, in harmony with the other three, they were ... a sign of the times. Yes, I heard them on the radio first hand while I was in high school.
Cass Elliot had a beautiful voice, and harmonized beautifully with Michelle Phillips.Great band, and great music with a sad background.Probably a prelude to Fleetwood Mac.
I was a baby when this came out but it was one of those songs that was always just there. As a kid I hated it because it was the exact opposite of the 80s. It was dark and moody. Now I love it, it's incredibly descriptive of the times and just brings back memories like a flood.
Cass was widely (no pun intended) loved, and i don't ever remember hearing nasty comments about her weight. It was absolutely heartbreaking when she died. I still have my Mamas and Papas albums.
What was true is that John, Michelle and Dennis were singing as a trio in a restaurant on the Island of St. Thomas. Cass really wanted to join the group but she couldn't hit the high notes John wanted her to. One day she was hit on the head by a pipe falling from a rooftop. She went to the hospital to recover, and when she came out she could hit the high notes.
From all accounts Cass was a very likeable person. It's sad to see people die so young. For the band, this song is a classic. It's on every playlist I make from this era. It has the heart of the '60s written all over it.
Cass Elliot was the voice of the group. The group was respected by fellow musicians by their success, but Cass was especially respected. Their popularity was on the wane beginning in 1967 where they were the main force behind organizing the Monterrey Pop Festival, where audiences were introduced to Janis Joplin, The Who and of course Jimi Hendrix.
Cass used to tell a story that John and Denny were reluctant to let her join the group because her voice wasn't good enough. Then she was accidentally hit on the head by a copper pipe, and miraculously, her voice improved! The reality is that Cass probably invented this story to avoid the awkward truth: the guys didn't want her in the group because they thought her obesity would be bad for their youthful, sexy image. But then she ended up becoming the overwhelming favorite of fans, who didn't care about her weight because her singing voice was almost superhuman.
The Mamma and Pappas were a group for only 18 months, yet their influence is felt to this day. Michelle was 16 at the time this recording was made and now she is the last surviving member.
There was a whole other thing going on, she was thee daughter and it messed her up badly as it would to any normal person. when I first came to San Francisco we drove up a hill and the whole city was before us, and this song came up on the radio. perfection.
6:01 Hey, Diane, in case you're wondering what the inspiration was for this song: The Mama's & The Papa's were recording material for an upcoming album, and it was during the winter season and, if I remember correctly, they were recording this new material in New York, and Michelle was feeling a bit homesick for L.A. and overall, just feeling miserable. John (the guy who played the guitar in this video) wrote this song as a means of trying to cheer Michelle up
Beach Boys version is mint! Perfect cover/update! John and Michelle Phillip's daughter joined with the daughters of Brian Wilson (Beach Boys) to form their own girl group Wilson Phillips in the 80's. This song is a great first step on a very diverse musical path.
I dont care about backstories to any group or song i like a song for tge song lyrics or the tempo or the artists ability to perform the song with good harmony and clarity ! If i like the song i like it if i dont then i don't that simple !
Great review, Irish Girl. Back in the day, no one ever knew about the 'back stories', that info was only available in the trade magazines and the offices of seedy record company producers. We only heard the music on the radio or the rare appearance on American Bandstand or Ed Sullivan Show. The music industry wasn't much different than the film industry, so you know how that all went down. My, how the interweb has changed not only the perception, but reality itself.
It was Catherine Elliot who suggested, during a Party, that David Crosby, Stephen Stills and British Graham Nash made a Group, which had its debut at the famous Woodstock Festival! Later joined by Canadian Niel Young.
And according to their own story, they entered a Church to become warm and not for any religious feeling. They frequently used all their income and needed money, so at one time their Credit Card was broken with a remark: "We have looked for this Card a long time"!

Cass Elliot felt that she was "insecure about her weight", but out of all of them...she was the most iconic. I first saw her playing a witch on an old kid's show called H.R. Pufnstuf and I was instantly mesmerized by her singing ability. (I was really young mind you. LOL) In retrospect, she has done s few colabs on stage with several famous people , including John Denver and Julie Andrews. IMHO Cass Elliot and Karen Carpenter have to be my two favorite female singers of all time.

Enjoyed Listening to the song with You sharing in the Journey and Learning about the Band. I did not know all that was going on in the Band. Yeah, the backstory about the band is pretty crazy. From what I have heard, before they formed the band, John Phillips actually got with Michelle while she was still in a previous relationship. There were all kinds of love triangles going on and LOTS of drama and poor Cass. She wanted to get with Denny and Denny ended up getting with Michelle. Cass is also probably really the only one who had a successful career outside of the group and if you ask me had the most musical talent out of the rest of the band. You might want to also check out her version of Dream A Little Dream Of Me which while that is attributed to the Mamas and the Papas, she provides all of the singing on it. The rest of the band also had a hit with Monday Monday.
Some notes. The band was known for its great harmony and for Michelle Phillip's beauty. The band was only together for about 3 years, but had 6 top 10 hits. One of their hits was called Creeque Alley and this is somewhat autobiographical of the group. John and Michelle are the parents of Chynna Phillips of the girl group Wilson-Phillips. Like her mother Chynna is very beautiful and a solid singer. My understanding is that Michelle protected Chynna from John. After the group disbanded, Michelle became an actress, Denny fizzled, John's reputation blew up and Cass became the best solo singer of the four with several hits and TV appearances. Her untimely death was sincerely a tragedy. Yes, during this time, people were generally slimer than they are now. It was the rare child who was obese. I attribute the change to now where a high percentage of people are obese to sedentary lifestyles for adults, lack of exercise for children and a high concentration of fatty foods (fast food for example). Janis Joplin was very definitely Rock, not Folk Rock.
The Mamas and The Papas were an amazing vocal group. Denny Doherty was a Canadian, so it made us Canadians really interested in this group. However, there was a lot behind the scene drama going on with the members of this group. But damn could they harmonize when they sang. California Dreaming was a song that I became enamoured with on my first hearing. I would sing along with it, and still do every time I hear it. It's a song that spoke to me then, and still does. I really liked a lot of this bands tunes. Michelle Phillips had been a model and went on to be an actress in TV and films. John Phillips stayed in music, but he got involved with in a less than fatherly way with his daughter Mackenzie Phillips, who briefly sang with the group in one of it reformations. She was also an actress know mainly for One Day at a Time. Denny Doherty did music and then got into acting. He played the Harbour Master, in the Canadian kids show Theodore Tugboat from 1993 to 2001 and acted in other Canadian TV shows. So a talented group of performers, who took a weird roads, as individuals.
Did You know? the Mama's and Papa's were introduced to the Rock n Roll Hall of Fame in 1998. California Dreamin song is in a lot of really popular movies like Forrest Gump(1994) and The Hollywood Knights(1980). A lot of their other songs are in a lot of movies and TV from 1960s and are in current movies/TV in 2024. IMDB has all the Mamas and Papas songs in movies/tv listed under soundtracks. Looks like Mamas and Papas are a favorite for soundtracks.
The Wrecking Crew was the arranger and performer for the recording. They were responsible for most of the hit records of that era. See the documentary.
The eating the banana thing was done a few times I’ve heard of, in different ways. It was a way to demonstrate their protest to playing to a prerecorded track. Tv shows often insisted artists not play live. I assume it was to avoid mistakes or sound issues. By eating while singing she was able to show the audience it was against her will and not break her contract. I saw another version of this recently. If I recall correctly the singer grabbed a guitar and started playing even though he wasn’t live and no sound was produced:
I like that you do the backstory stuff. I've heard the song and the ham sandwich rumor, but this band was before my time so I didn't know about the fooling around business. Good job!
They had some of the best harmonies in rock. Always loved their music, and Cass Elliot had a beautiful voice. And I always thought she was pretty. John and Michelle's daughter, Mackenzie, was on the sit-com (so some call it a dramedy) One day at a Time. John was an addict and Mackenzie also fell into drug use. The Mamas and the Papas song Creeque Alley actually tells a story about how Cass joined the group with hints of what was going on in the folk-rock scene back then.

I use to point out Swarthmore College to people because it's near where I live. I stopped when I found out Mama Cass didn't attend it, but was merely a convenient rhyme for John Phillips when he wrote the song, "Creeque Alley".
Who the fuck is Cass Elliott?
Cass Elliot's fans didn't care about her weight. She had one of the great voices of any genre. After the breakup, she went on to a successful solo career, where people really got to see her amazing voice. You can hear her voice featured in their song "Sing for your Supper" Whether you react to it or not, do yourself a favor and listen to it. Also in the link to the version, you can see at 1:15 of the recording that Cass shows her distaste for lip sinking by saying something to Denny Doherty while she is "singing!"
I always did like this song. You certainly picked the right time of year to play it. It's cold and a bit dreary here today.
Aww best time to get cosy and have a hot chocolate in a fuzzy sweater by the fire though Bill! 🔥
The funny thing is that I'm in California, but about 3 hours north of LA, and it's been a week since we've been able to see the sun.
On the size issue: Around this time, one of the top models was Twiggy. She was aptly named and revered for her thin frame. Wiki says she was 5 foot 6, and weighed about 91 lbs (41 KG). Pictures of her were everywhere.
there was no back story when I first heard this so I just have the song embedded in my brain as what it was as art.
Beat me to it. But, yeah.
For it's wonderful harmonies, this is one of the best songs ever.
John Phillips’s daughter Makenzie was the oldest daughter on the show One Day at a Time.
One Day at a Time also takes you to a Van Halen connection.
And we all know what Makenzie said about her and her fathers "special" relationship.
@@burnout_2017 Yeah, 2:10 to 2:20 didn't age well.
When your TV sister is Valerie Bertinelli, and your real life sister is Chynna Phillips, you can see how a girl could have self-image problems.
As soon as the song started I was like 'oh this song', but I don't think I've ever actually listened to it, I just know the sound.
Cass was always my favorite of the group. Rest in peace sweet lady.
love Mama Cass she is so talented.
Madame Bovary once quipped "Never meet ( or in this case, research) your heroes".
Look at the kids in the audience at Woodstock, much thinner than today's kids.
I find it weird that an Irish girl couldn't pronounce "Doherty" correctly 🤣
I found that confounding also. It makes me wonder if she is indeed Irish.
@@mandandanmandamayor3511 Don't doubt that! She was probably reaching for the American pronunciation.
Retired HS music teacer here. Had my choir sing this, with a band girl playing flute. The kids loved it, and so did their parents.

Don't mess around with Jim.

Mama Cass' singing voice was a treasure.
I never knew much about the affairs until now.
"Monday,Monday" is a BANGER! As is" Creeque Alley" BOTH are worthy of exploration by yinz "kids" LOL.
Don't forget "smart" phones.
They wandered down the studio hallway, looking for a soloist. Found a jazz flute guy. He came in with his alto flute, nailed it on the first take.
The introduction of the Barbie Doll to little girls didn't help either.
Flutes and harmonies were banned in the 90s. Tambourines in the 80s. Great classic sound from the era.
This was on the Ed Sullivan show which had an orchestra for backup and used boom mics out of camera sight above the singers, all live. There is another Sullivan performance with the one lead by Michelle on Dedicated to the One I Love. She's not just the pretty one.

They produced lots of great songs in a short period of time.
this song's been in tons of movies, TV shows, and commercials as have many of their songs.
Cass was the strongest singer and was loved by the fans -- and Michelle was an absolute knockout.
Cass was the soul, John was the genius, Michelle was the face, and Denny was the other guy.
My jam is more Industrial metal but I'll admit the group had nice harmony. The group's backstory is wild. Thanks Diane 🎉
Happy Christmas to Chewy & Diane. Please get him some delicious treats & a little something nice for yourself.
Yes, I think people in general where more fit back then. Guys were especially mercilessly macho and competitive with each other.
I heard John Phillips on a talk show. He mentioned the lyrics. In some kind of mixup the line, "and I pretend to pray." was supposed to be, "and I began to pray." He said, " I pretend to pray doesn't make any sense."
I always wondered about that!
That's funny because many people seem like they are pretended to pray on a daily basis.
I used to think that "began" was the lyric. "Pretend" made sense to me in that he ducked into a church to get warm, pretended to pray so he wouldn't get kicked out by the preacher.
Yes, almost like he was pulling a prank on the Pastor. 😊
A lot of these comments seemed to have tapped into the 60's much more than I knew back then, and I was born in1950
"Creeque Alley" tells the band's origin story from their POV. Catchy tune, also!
Diane: “There was a massive rumour…”
[PAUSE]
Me: “I wonder if it’s gonna be the ham sandwich?”
Personal M&P favorite: Monday Monday. Pure pop magic.
The 60's were great for popular music. Believe me.
They had such great harmonies.
Cass was an awesome singer.
I recommend their amazing cover of the Beatles' "I Call Your Name," which really showcases the voices of Cass and Denny.
The Mamma and Pappas were a group for only 18 months, yet their influence is felt to this day. Michelle was 16 at the time this recording was made and now she is the last surviving member.
One of the best songs....ever!! The messy history just makes it more interesting!!
This is my favourite song to listen to in the winter time. It always gives me a comfy, cosy feeling.
I luv that!
There was a whole other thing going on, she was thee daughter and it messed her up badly as it would to any normal person. when I first came to San Francisco we drove up a hill and the whole city was before us, and this song came up on the radio. perfection.

Hey, Diane, in case you're wondering what the inspiration was for this song:
The Mama's & The Papa's were recording material for an upcoming album, and it was during the winter season and, if I remember correctly, they were recording this new material in New York, and Michelle was feeling a bit homesick for L.A. and overall, just feeling miserable. John (the guy who played the guitar in this video) wrote this song as a means of trying to cheer Michelle up
She mentions that after watching the performance.

It was the 60's. You know, free love and all that.
You are a very good person! I agree that adultery is one of the worst things that a person could do to someone.
That’s yucky 🤢

Did You know? the Mama's and Papa's were introduced to the Rock n Roll Hall of Fame in 1998. California Dreamin song is in a lot of really popular movies like Forrest Gump(1994) and The Hollywood Knights(1980). A lot of their other songs are in a lot of movies and TV from 1960s and are in current movies/TV in 2024. IMDB has all the Mamas and Papas songs in movies/tv listed under soundtracks. Looks like Mamas and Papas are a favorite for soundtracks.
I learned about most songs from the soundtracks looking at the end credits of tv shows and movie.
Good job!
Good song. Talented kids from a couple of the performers. Definitely a wild time in the 60s
Yes, Diane, we were slimmer back then. Want proof? Watch the movie 'Woodstock' and look at the kids; we were all pretty fit.
