Puffer Fish vs Mantis Shrimp: Puffer Fish EXPLODES Underwater after ATTACK from Mantis Shrimp HD

- Have you ever seen something while Scuba Diving that both shocked and amazed you? This is a "once in a lifetime" video of a Spearing Mantis Shrimp killing a Puffer fish.
(WARNING: Graphic & potentially disturbing content of death in Nature. Can be considered R-Rated by some).
While Scuba Diving at Racha Yai Island, just south of Phuket, home to a plethora of great macro life, we witnessed something that completely surprised us, despite over 10 years of diving at this island!!
A fully inflated Puffer Fish, at first seemingly stuck in a hole in the sand. What started as initially merely surprising took a far more violent turn:
From beneath the sand rose the menacing head and body of a Spearing Mantis Shrimp which, it turned out, was clasping the Puffer fish from below!?! As it's main defence the Puffer of course inflated, disabling the Mantis Shrimp from taking it's prey beneath the sand. However, the razor sharp claws of the Mantis Shrimp were completely locked into the Puffer fish making his escape equally impossible!!!
For nearly 7 minutes they jostled for an advantage over the other. Just when iust appeared the Mantis Shrimp would give up, in one final attempt, it locked it's claws into it's helpless prey and squeezed so hard it actually "EXPLODED" the fully inflated puffer fish, all of which has been caught and can be clearly seen in this short video.
Graphic, Sad, Shocking, Disturbing, but also Natural! A gritty depiction of the thin line that separates life from death, one which very Scuba Divers may ever witness first hand! Survival of the fittest.

Watch zefrank's video about the mantis shrimp. There are 2 types. The spearer shrimp, which was in this video and my favorite the giant mantis shrimp that punches stuff. It's punch is as powerful as a gun and when it punches it pretty much wreaks part of the universe.

That Mantis pierced a hole through his stomach, prevent him from ballooning up anymore.
When he dragged him into the hole, you can see the Pufferfish trying to expand and realize it doesn't work anymore.
It's like being shot in the leg and realizing you can't run anymore.
I didn't even notice the fish was still alive until I saw his mouth move towards the end. THAT SUCKS.

Nature can be cruel, but at the same time, it takes care of its own. One animal died, yeah, but another animal was able to live another day by being just a little stronger and smarter. It may not seem fair, but its the only way they have of doing things. So far, it's worked.

It wasnt an explosion :I that was a "Spear" Mantis shrimp, it used the barbs on its arms to pierce it. If it had been the other kind (they have rounded bone on the ends of their arms) it could have blown it apart with the shockwave created by its punch

I love how these little guys beat most of their pray into submission and drag them off, the ones with clubs rarely actually kill their prey before trying to eat them.
+Jones Crimson no, they generally kill it, the clubbing variety especially, as even when they miss, a punch shockwave is enough to kill any fish near it (not more then a few centimetres) hell, they punch fast enough to turn the water around it to steam!
cai freer Yes they are fast and powerful, but small aquatic animals, particularly crustaceans, are easier to stun or paralyze than brain damage due to the small size of their brain. To really kill them you would need to turn their insides into complete mush or bleed them out.
Unless the mantis is smart enough to actually know fish anatomy and try to kill it, I sincerely doubt it's killing them every single time or even most of the time. On the other hand, Plankton built himself a robot wife, so whatever yo.
+Jones Crimson if you have ever fished for crawdads you know how weak they are, I assure you most things are being killed before eaten.. considering their power and the small point of impact and the fact they usually will be hit many times.
old comment, but the shrimp with smashers eat stuff alive also. Mine usually punches the claws off crayfish, then rolls them around and eats their soft bits first, while it tries to get away. It'll punch it every now and then if it nearly gets out, but only softly to control it. Mine only ever punches at full strength if its breaking rock in its cave, or if the feeder cray I give it is a little too big and poses a threat.

The Puffer Fish packs one hell of a bite, it can easily bite and break parts of that Mantis Shrimp if it was on the offense but it was in defense the whole time and that's why the Puffer Fish lost IMHO.

Mantis shrimp have evolved to be extremely efficient hunters. The puffer would lose that fight over and over again, unless it somehow got behind the mantis, which wouldn't happen because it strikes from it's burrow.

This one is the "spearer" type of mantis shrimps with mantis-y arms. The one that you talk about is "smasher" type.

I wasn't sure what I was looking at when I first viewed it. When he said the pufferfish exploded, I thought I was going to see blood. But after rewatching it, I can see what happened. When the shrimp squeezed, what happened was the equivilant of puffing your cheeks and blowing out of your mouth.
