Here's some interesting Sunshine history: prior to the installation of the gondola in 1980 you had to take shuttle busses from the parking lot waaaay up to the base. The road is now the ski out - one of the longest runs in Canada if not the longest. My dad was Sunshine's lawyer at the beginning of the 80's and I recall him making a trip to Zermatt Switzerland with owner Ralph Scurfield to broker the purchase of lifts from VonRoll. He also did some of the earliest negotiations with Parks Canada to open Goat's Eye mountain. And herein is the single greatest drawback to the Big Three resorts. Expansion and improvements can be sandbagged for years and even decades at every turn by both Parks Canada and environmental groups. It took over a decade of negotiations to make some movement on Goat's Eye Mountain. By the time it opened my dad had been a judge for years but we still got invited to the Inn for a night for the opening. To completely experience Sunshine you need to stay a few nights on the mountain. It's glorious.
Hey that's some really really good reading! This longest run is it basically mostly a green? Reason I ask is my buddy whom I have tugged with me a few times to Whistler is getting near 70 and he sheds a tear each time I head to the hill now... I'd like him back out but greens are about the safest place for him with his hip etc.... myself I'm yet to do a pillow dance off some sick vertical where real mountains lie!
@@RogerDiotte...also pretty much everything serviced by the Strawberry chair is green, gentle, and easy and the chair has great views at the top of the endless alpine valleys and peaks completely blanketed in white that surround the resort. Great video glad to see you make it to Sunshine 😍 I worked as a lifty on goats eye 2021/2022 best lift on the Hill you can get 90000 ft Vert in a day if you crank hard all day and they run it fast we often had it cranked at 110% about 1100 ft per minute 8 minutes up 2 to 3 minutes down for 1500 ft of Vert unbeatable no lift lines except holiday weekends twice a season 😅

@@misterslats correct but you have to keep left to avoid the waterfall and you eventually stumble on the cross country trail which eventually leads to the ski out
Those stairs and the ridge following seem the scariest part of the Dive? You got great snow. Nice filming. That pillow line was anything but, seem lucky there> Thanks for the film.
I've been a Lake Louise/Castle guy for most of my life but you opened my eyes to what Scmushine has... might need a little review! I know the "inbounds" (non dive/ wild west) terrain very well and that doesn't hold up when compared to the other resorts but those pillow drops looked sick... not much like that at the other Alberta resorts.
3:34 when it snows a lot, it’s the best run on the mountain… and if it’s not closed for avalanche risk. Ahh you didn’t show the canyon through the trees at the bottom, that’s the best part .
I reckon that third person perspective is what is needed more in your vids mate, its got the perspective which is often missing, and gives a much better idea of the steepness of some of these runs, and also shows off the 'drops' a little better... getting much more on point with your vids mate... all you need now is the obligatory drone shots and you'll be giving Nikolai Shirmer a run for his money, haha!
Thanks dude! I agree with 3rd person being cool perspective on big lines. I don't do it often because it can take away from the skiing experience for me, or the person who is filming. Maybe if I had a paid filmer I'd feel okay about it but it's all about enjoying the skiing and less about the filming. Skier first, video maker second :). Drones get the coolest shot but can't fly on most resorts which is a bummer (sort of). Would be wild with a bunch of drones wizzing around LOL.
Thanks Nate! I think subscribers are a metric of the past unfortunately and will be hard to grow. These days, because of Tik Tok and Insta Reels people just expect to get fed content vs subscribing and curating content on their feeds for themselves. I personally miss the days have having complete control of the feed across all platforms.
Before the gondola us older dudes used to pile into a school bus and endure a suicide ride to the main lodge. At the end of the day we skied out rather than take the bus back down. Still enjoy the ski out to this day!
Hi James 😊 Hello from super windy Switzerland… no skiing the last two days due to 100kmh winds 😞Who does LAPS on “Delerium Dive”? You guys are on another level… impressive skiing, impressive cajones ⛷
@@riseandalpine How do you like the Unleashed btw? I almost pulled the trig on a set of 108's but then I realized I'm broke as a joke atm. They're not soggy noodles, are they? I take it a hard charging gent such as yourself requires a little stiffness in the ski? I'm carrying a few extra, so no wet noodles. I want something that will blast off, and still bite on the groom. I love the carvers, too, and every day can't be a pow day, so, what sayeth you?
Which southside chute did you do? Are they all equally as good? How long was the hike? Is it a must to get a guide for delirium dive if you never been there before or is there some way to get some instruction on what to look out and where to turn? At last how does the Dive compare to Spanky's? Sorry for so many questions and thanks in advance!
don't have to do the hike for the chutes, there's a ski traverse to get into the rocky sections. looks like they started at the farthest chute (above stampede) and then skied diagonally back towards think again or something. Delirium has guided tours, you should always go with someone who has been before because there are some convex cliffs you can't see until you're right on top of them, and you're supposed to ski it with a partner every time.
We did the highest and furthest skiers left part of southside chutes. Hike is easy. You don't need a guide for Delirium Dive but you are required to carry avi gear and have a partner. A guide or local guidance would always be helpful if you're want to ski the best spots of snow. It's easy enough to not get cliffed out but if visibility is bad you would have to take it pretty easy. The Dive is quite similar to Spanky's, just more sustained and the drop in initally is more commiting.
Question. Which one is better. sunshine or lake louis? i've always heard that the lifts are super short at sunshine and that people spend most of there time on the lift. but is it still worth it? lmk. love your videos once again.
Sunshine has a few short lifts, there's some fun runs off of them but you don't have to take them if you don't want to; you can just lap Divide and Goat's Eye if that's more your style. SS Chutes at Sunshine is my favourite zone in Banff
Biased as it may be. But always loved Sunshine. Sitting at the top, taking the views in and seeing a true view of a thousand peaks makes one feel blessed for having such an amazing place here in our back yard. Very fortunate to grow up in Alberta and ski at multiple world class resorts within a 3hr radius of Calgary.
@@flairrahahaa Overall I prefer Louise, I find it more scenic and it has great terrain all over the resort. That said, there's no clear winner (my favourite zone is at Sunshine, like I mentioned) so you're just going to have to ski both!
i was back there in the 80's and a young man .... didn't have your balls to ski where you went .......and not good enough to try something like that .......better now ....
I'm not sure if I have enough days under my belt to properly craft an opinion. If Delirium and Wild West don't open, Louise might be more fun from a terrain variety and steep skiing perspective. But when all of Sunshine is open with good snow, I'm not sure it can be beat. Probably should let the Albertans duke this one out though.
@@kylegoplin No. If I'm right about the location. It's the Hayes Hill Trees, Looking across to Eagle Creek, Sunshine coast, and Wildfire. There are similar looking pillows in the BC off wawa though. But for Hayes Hill, you need to go through the dive

Subscribed ! Super cool
Vids bro
Those stairs and the ridge following seem the scariest part of the Dive? You got great snow. Nice filming. That pillow line was anything but, seem lucky there> Thanks for the film.
Climbing down the stairs was scary then dropping off the cliff from the top LOL
The views are epic. The lines are insane
Sunshine is so freaking good!
This video was crazy I LOVE IT
Thanks!
Krusty has had amazing season. Well done. Plenty of awesome stomps and drops adventures in BC. No Red this year?
Wish me luck, I'm going to Fernie this aft to test out my ankle on the bunny hill. 🐰Well, the Mighty Moose actually...LoL 🦌
Take er' easy out there!
Easy does 'er, eh there, bud.
Your amazing 🌬️
Thanks!
Your videos are a
Amazing
I've been a Lake Louise/Castle guy for most of my life but you opened my eyes to what Scmushine has... might need a little review! I know the "inbounds" (non dive/ wild west) terrain very well and that doesn't hold up when compared to the other resorts but those pillow drops looked sick... not much like that at the other Alberta resorts.
I was surprised with how much cool terrain is hiding at Sunshine!
Awesome video man
Thanks dude!
8:30 is kinda nutty bro. That sauce hits different. I think one day you’ll have to be the first dude to ski from Canada to Mexico.
A Canada to Mexico tour would be sweet!
i still dont get how this channel doesnt have 100k subscribers
Thanks! We've made it to 25k.. That still blows my mind.
On a good snow day, Sunshine is almost impossible to beat.
Such a wicked spot!
Sunshine just jumped way up my list of resorts to try to get to.
Dooooo it!!!!
Woo thanks for the drop
:)
3:34 when it snows a lot, it’s the best run on the mountain… and if it’s not closed for avalanche risk. Ahh you didn’t show the canyon through the trees at the bottom, that’s the best part .
The canyon is super fun but I still think the Dive itself is by far the best part. The canyon reminds me too much of the 'pain drain' at Revy LOL
the outside of the gondola cam kills me everytime lmao
LOL
I just remembered about the fun ski out to the parking lot
It's pretty wicked & so scenic
Just beautiful, Sunshine's one of my top 3 ski hills I've been to. We usually ski it 2-3 times per year.
It is absolutely epic - stoked you get to ski there so much
I reckon that third person perspective is what is needed more in your vids mate, its got the perspective which is often missing, and gives a much better idea of the steepness of some of these runs, and also shows off the 'drops' a little better... getting much more on point with your vids mate... all you need now is the obligatory drone shots and you'll be giving Nikolai Shirmer a run for his money, haha!
It is taking too long to get 25k subscribers! You should have 50k by now.
That's insane... I can't imagine a school bus going up that road on a powder day hahahah
Hi James 😊 Hello from super windy Switzerland… no skiing the last two days due to 100kmh winds 😞Who does LAPS on “Delerium Dive”? You guys are on another level… impressive skiing, impressive cajones ⛷
100KPH... don't blow away. Hopefully it settles down so you can ski some wind blown chalk
Awesome vid. Learnt to ski at that place. So your bases look like the Grand Canyon now?
9 inch core shot on the edge of my unleashed... Worth it 100% though LOL
Move to Alberta and get closer to those sweet Albertan rockies and eastern BC ski resorts!
Also you should try the Wild West run at sunshine
sometime.
Alberta rocks! I tried the Wild West in the new video I posted today. What an epic zone.
Alright. Touchy topic, Sunshine or Louise? 😎👍
why not both 🥰
@@unknowablerootvegetabletrue man!
Lake Louise any day. 80% of Sunshines terrain is pretty flat…when DD or WW is not open Sunshine is fairly boring…at least if you want some steep!
@@Aygo0 true but when they are it's a bunch of fun. I prefer Louise on a regular basis but Sunshine hits on the days it's good
Sunshine in the Spring and when sunny. Louise when it snows a lot.
For someone who likes whistler, I would like to say SSV is for you.
@@src248 Okay. now that lifts are out of the debate, which resort is better?
Biased as it may be. But always loved Sunshine. Sitting at the top, taking the views in and seeing a true view of a thousand peaks makes one feel blessed for having such an amazing place here in our back yard. Very fortunate to grow up in Alberta and ski at multiple world class resorts within a 3hr radius of Calgary.
@@flairrahahaa Overall I prefer Louise, I find it more scenic and it has great terrain all over the resort. That said, there's no clear winner (my favourite zone is at Sunshine, like I mentioned) so you're just going to have to ski both!
@@flairrahahaa Sunsine's snow is all natural no snow making. Feels better. Closer to Banff town too.
Nice video, when did you go? Looks like you went before it was 15c and sunny as can be
This was right before the big March warmup!
Sunny ways, my friends.
i was back there in the 80's and a young man .... didn't have your balls to ski where you went .......and not good enough to try something like that .......better now ....
Which do you prefer Lak Louis or Sunny V?
I'm not sure if I have enough days under my belt to properly craft an opinion. If Delirium and Wild West don't open, Louise might be more fun from a terrain variety and steep skiing perspective. But when all of Sunshine is open with good snow, I'm not sure it can be beat.
Probably should let the Albertans duke this one out though.
I have a challenge for you it involves going backwards down a blue or black run :)
My buddy and I used to race Switch down from Whistler Peak all the way to creekside LOL
@@riseandalpine Impressive
Those southside chutes look like sick! Is that off Goat's Eye?
Yup, skier's left from the top of the chair
Yup - they were sick. Especially the line in the sun that James rode
What skis are those in what width/length plse?
Nordica Unleashed 114 - 191cm length
How adventurous you guys are......
That's what life is all about!
When was this?
How did u get to the “pillow line”
Dive - take the fat boy traverse. skiers left of fat boy. in the trees.
@@mikerogers3942 can i get there without doing the dive?
@@kylegoplin Dive is on the other side of the valley, this is off of Wawa
@@kylegoplin No. If I'm right about the location. It's the Hayes Hill Trees, Looking across to Eagle Creek, Sunshine coast, and Wildfire. There are similar looking pillows in the BC off wawa though. But for Hayes Hill, you need to go through the dive
@@mikerogers3942 thx
Yessssir
:)
And now for the great Alberta debate, James. Lake Louise or Sunshine?
I'm not sure if I have enough days under my belt to properly craft an opinion. If Delirium and Wild West don't open, Louise might be more fun from a terrain variety and steep skiing perspective. But when all of Sunshine is open with good snow, I'm not sure it can be beat.
Probably should let the Albertans duke this one out though.
How the hell do you get to that pillow line? Somewhere near backdoor??
I honestly can't really explain how to find it, only been to sunshine a handful of times
The stairs..😂
