    As a patient with anxiety I immediately feel like a burden tbh. No one wants to be a nuisance but I fear I'm immediately perceived as someone who would likely take up too much of their limited time.
    I can sense when they're pushed for time as it is, let alone if I happen to struggle during an appointment (I do try my best, and try numerous things to stop panicking).
    That said, even when things go to plan theres no time to discuss your treatment properly and you always leave with unanswered questions, and in my case, untreated problems.
    This government seems only to happy to tax you as much as possible, yet fail to look after you.. or treat those there to look after you fairly. Quite a messed up system.

    I'm motivated but my dentist isn't. He just wants to remove my teeth. I flew to Paphos, Cyprus and had 3 lots of laser treatment for €250 and a deep manual clean on one tooth €20. My UK NHS had a schedule to remove 3 teeth. My Cyprus dentist saved them. We saw a doctor and physio too for my husband's back troubles and other troubles- no chance in the UK. Bonus... we had a lovely holiday topping up our vitamin D 🌞 levels too. 2022 it's desperate in the UK for dentists and doctors. The system is broke. Not quite the case as a dentist gives up earning a salary for 5 years. But don't worry, most (like nurses) don't even bother pursuing the profession anymore. As the dentist in the vid says the great British public don't value their teeth. The overheads for a practice are enormous. It's just not worth it and I gave up and now work as a housekeeper in a eco-spa. Much more enjoyable. I just laugh my head off when I listen to the British public complaining. The average salary of a dentist in the UK is £66k. Sounds good but take all the bits out. ARF, cpd days, MDU insurance blah blah., Better off being CEO for Thames Water. Great video! I made the difficult decision not to go into dentistry recently because of the current state of the NHS system and the effect it's having on those that work in it. A BDA survey published in 2019 of roughly 2000 dentists revealed that nearly 50% of them can't cope with the pressure they're under, with higher stress levels being linked with increasing NHS workload. It also pointed towards a higher-than-average rate of suicidal ideation. Key reasons for this include growing regulation and litigation fears. There are also a number of UK studies showing that approximately 70% of dentists experience back pain, with high numbers also suffering sleeping difficulties, headaches and teeth grinding. Dentistry exacts a heavy physical toll and the number of patients crammed into the average working day in an NHS setting in order to reach UDA targets doesn't help! I only hope that the NHS contract is reformed soon.

      Hi Emma, sorry I have only just picked up your comment. Yes you can get insurance through various companies like simply health and BUPA, but you will have to check each policy carefully because there are limits to how much you can claim etc. Sometimes you have to pay the private practice upfront then claim it back through insurance. Many private practices have membership plans where you pay £x per month and it includes your check ups and cleanings and a discount off treatment.

In the Private world we’ve gone back to ‘normal’ albeit still running with some changes due to seeing more new patients discarded by the NHS. NHS Dentistry needs more funds directly from Manufacturers of soft drinks containing more than 5g of sugar per 100ml have been made to pay a levy of 18p a litre to the Treasury, or 24p a litre for sugar content over 8g per 100ml, since the tax came into force in April 2018.The latest figure of 21,544 NHS dentists in England is the lowest for a decade, with acute shortages in counties including Lincolnshire and Norfolk. In Thurrock, Essex, just 26.1% of adults and 30.7% of children have seen a dentist in the past two years. Figures in several other areas are not much better

    WTF am I paying for? Can I apply for a rebate on my national insurance for zero dental care. I am private now and after cracking a tooth on a rock hard peanut, treatment has cost just over £1200 so far. Absolutely crippling.

  • @kylewg26
    @kylewg26 3 роки тому +2

    Patients don't know the fact that grouped treatment is unfairly giving you more work, if you were to explain this to your patients I'm sure they would be willing to receive their treatment in several procedures- which is the wrong way to solve this problem.
    But the end goal is to get more people using/ receiving the treatment through the NHS as we pay for within our taxes, its wrong for us to have to go down private routes because the government has purposefully 'broken the machine'.
    We need more people pressuring the government to co-operate, how do we do this?

    • @YourSmileClinic
      @YourSmileClinic 3 роки тому +3

      Regardless if the treatment is grouped or over several procedures dentists are only remunerated for the completed course of treatment. When this is hard is when patients haven't attended regularly and there's 20 years of work to do in one course of treatment. Which means that if dentists took this on there would be less time / resources to treat others. The NHS system works well when patients are well maintained and attending regularly for preventative care. But access is poor and there are many nervous patients who delay treatment until they're in pain which actually means more complex treatment is often required.

    Isn't setting targets like this encouraging Bad dentists to rush through NHS patients?. I have just had full dentures fitted and I was amazed at the speed it all happened?, teeth that broke were just left in?, I had my lower denture last week without having an impression made?? , the appointment that I would have had to make the impression was taken up when I had to have further surgery after a tooth was broken off and just left in on the previous appointment.
    The dentist had made tried to make an impression but I was in terrible pain because I still had the broken tooth with its nerves intact in my lower jaw!, he was genuinely annoyed that I would need a further appointment to remove the remains of the tooth he broke. So he must have just used the impression that had to be stopped because I was in pain from the snapped off tooth!, that cant be right. I can take it but I would HATE my partner or children having to go through that

I'm not sure what system would work best because when it was fee per item (i.e. dentists get paid for each item of treatment they did) there was a problem with some dentists over treating people. Theres always a few bad eggs who ruin it for the rest of us ethical dentists.

    As a dentist, the NHS system is expliotative of dentists. it devalues the professionals. i have worked in it 21 years, it gets worse every year, less subsidy, more overheads, this woman is very poor at explaining. dentists leave nhs because 1. exploitatative system with low remuneration 2. appeal of private system 3. lack of respect from the public for the profession 4. over-regualation from GDC and CQC 5. ridiculuos red tape worsens every year 6. appeal of Australia / Canada / mid east / far east theses places respect dentists and pay much higher than uk . the outside options. as i have given nhs dentistry 21 years. and notice british graduatess go private fast, and are happy to wave two fingers at the NHS. NhS dentists are from poorer countries , that do the jobs local people refuse and regard beneath them. But the hospital service post is good, you feel you are truly helping people, and you dont have to talk to the public as the are put to sleep, this is the way I am going.

      Part of the beauty of being a dentist is being able to meet and talk to patients, changing their perceptions and improving their experience. I have time to do this in private practice due to the time I can spend with patients. I didn't leave because I think NHS is beneath me, in fact I do one day NHS but as an oral surgery provider. I do not have UDA targets to meet there so I can provide a good service there. Yes I agree with the points of overregulation. I don't think we are poorly remunerated but the targets make it hard for us to achieve good ethical dentistry.

    My Father in Law who's 83 has had the same NHS dentist for over 30 years and recently they tried to sell him a little bit of work that would cost the £62.10 band 2 charge privately at a cost of over £250! Basically they tried to take advantage of an old man!
    I don't particulary care about how dentists get paid by the NHS, wether they do private and NHS or just NHS at the end of the day you NEVER see a poor dentist and never will.
    I built up a massive phobia and managed to get in with an NHS dentist, started to get my teeth sorted but i got a toothache was told i needed a crown, i asked if he should xray it 1st but NO he just ploughed on and prepared it ready for the crown at a million mph, all i could smell was burning and left with the temporary crown and was in agony for days after and ended up at the emergency dental service who xrayed it and it was infected, so ibhad it extracted there and then. I think the dentist just wanted the band 3 charge and i now have a full blown phobia again and haven't been to the dentist since👎 oh and i've got toothache!

  • @ethanhayes9989
    @ethanhayes9989 3 роки тому +4

    Honestly, and I'm saying this as someone who's been avoiding the dentist for many many years due to phobia - thank you so much for taking the time to explain this.
    By explaining these things it genuinely helps me get to grips with my phobia, it empowers me to understand what's going on behind the scenes. Which believe it or not, massively helps my phobia.
    I have genuinely sympathy for dentists in the UK. From the very little I've learnt, the state of NHS dentistry is really quite upsetting, to be honest. But equally I absolutely understand that it simply isn't viable for your typical dentist to very complex and wide ranging work on the NHS.
    I had this idea that the dentist didn't give a crap about me and just wanted to rip my teeth out, but the situation is far more complex than me as an individual patient. I firmly believe most dentists would love a chance to provide proper patient care through the NHS - unfortunately the system doesn't nurture that and makes it more or less impossible for many.
    I've genuinely struggled to find NHS treatment, thankfully I am in a position where I can afford some level of private care and I am addressing my phobia head on - my appointment with a private dentist for the first time in 20% of my life span is next week - and I'm genuinely quite looking forward to seeing what we can do, and making a life change.
    My parents on the other hand don't have a penny to spare and live in a rural location. They cannot drive due to ill health. My mother has been trying to find an NHS fentist for 3 years or more, which frankly is heart breaking.
    Are the very core - and I don't think many would disagree on the face of it - it upsets me that money is a barrier to top class dental treatment.
    But again, I understand why this is the case. You cannot blame the individual dentist, by any means.
    Again, thanks for the video. Very insightful.

    You do it for financial reward. Patients are incidental. If dentists cared about patients more than their income, there wouldn't be any private dentists. This is why dentists do not clean your teeth or do root canals. It reduces the funding they get.

    • @BBrunswick
      @BBrunswick 2 роки тому +5

      Nobody works for nothing, and there is a positive correlation between expertise and income. However your reasoning that private dentists would not exist if we care more about patients is evidently wrong. You have no idea of the constraints a NHS dentist works under, which is why many of us chose to work privately. It allows us to focus on providing minimally invasive dentistry, to do root canal treatment and push preventative dental care.
      Funding in the NHS is worked out by hitting targets, there is no penalty for doing root canal treatment or scales and polishes.
      However in the age of narratives why let reality spoil a good story? For some reason many have a problem with others being more successful because they chose not to see the amount of hard work and talent it takes to get there. It is really social envy. That is not say that some of us are greedy and put profit before patient but I hope you do not tar every dentist with the same brush

    What i want to know is WHY dentists are now using rubbish filling material for fillings. ? The filling material dentists used in the 60.s 70., and 80.s was more permanent than the rubbish put in teeth these days. Time and time again we hear of people s fillings dropping out. Or dissolving over time when patients daily brush their teeth. I had white fillings put in my front teeth eons ago they lasted over 50 years now the modern white fillings inly last 2 to 3 years. Come off it. The amount of patients return visits to yhe dentist through rubbish fillings dropping out IS UNACCEPTABLE.
    SO DON.T GIVE US BULLSHIT patients are entiyled to treatment on nhs iif your dental practice owner is behaving like a bastard joun a union.
    Ps if your fillings do fall out you can buy a temp dental filler from the chemist. Its called Dentak temporary dental putty and it stops the pian and fills the hole till you get to dentist. If you have a toothache you can put it in the cavity it stops the pain till you get to dentist. Or Clove oil on cotton wool. Modernn fillings UTTER RUBBISH CHINESE SHIT. Never mind the excuses its tory privatisation and DENTISTS SHOULD JOIN A UNION £70 for a filling that comes out after a couple of years! Patients being conned and ripped off!.
