  • I don't intend to disparage the DNP (Doctor of Nursing Practice), but it doesn't represent what it was originally intended to represent: a terminal degree for practicing clinicians at the bedside, such as NPs and CRNAs. My recommendation is to soul search for what you may do 5 or 10 years down the road, and whether the DNP will become more and more the equivalent of the current Masters degree. Either degree is hard work, and requires some forethought. Unfortunately for those who are planning on obtaining their NP licensure, the DNP may be an attached requirement.

He is so right ---- NO ONE cares at all. I have a ton of education and letters, and absolutely none of that matters at all. All that matters is how well-prepared I am to care for patients. No one ever asks about my educational pursuits nor cares about where I went to school or what I achieved.

I have a few degrees a master's degree and ironically the thing that I spent all those years in school studying I did not go into that field. But I have those degrees hanging on the wall.

I working on my PhD, being in the field of Human Resources. Having accumulated savings over my career allows me the joy of researching a topic of my choosing - I intend to put my findings to work in my consulting business.
My professional experience of having worked with many “doctors” is that, in many cases, their thesis was on subjects that are only loosely related to their profession or daily work tasks. This, in practice, greatly reduces the value of such an educational title. Smart persons are very much aware of that and do not show off their titles. Good for them.

Thanks for watching! Right or wrong, my plan was to complete research in the most expeditious way in order to complete and defend the dissertation. I fully acknowledge my dissertation was not my life's work. Instead it was a means to an end.

@@DrWilliamMartinPhD There’s no right or wrong as it is a personal choice which also depends on prevailing circumstances. I do appreciate your comments and opinion.

In the DoD, the diagnosing clinician must have a doctoral degree level of education, for example Autism.

Please listen to this gentleman: no one is going to care that you have a doctorate degree, and the time and effort put into completing a terminal degree can be exhausting. I have a doctorate degree, but it isn't central to my identity, and I couldn't care less about being called 'Dr' or anything similar. I've been teaching at the university level since 2006, and although I worked in a college with a nursing program, I am not a nurse. DNPs in our institution could qualify for tenure with a certain number of publications, but unfortunately, in my opinion, DNPs were undervalued and not very respected by PhD holders. I didn't necessarily agree with this, as I've worked with many PhDs in my career whom I didn't consider very intelligent. Nevertheless, some people do make these degrees their essence. As this gentleman points out, strive to excel in your career, and people will respect you; it isn't necessary to pursue a doctorate degree.

Dr.. I’m gonna give it to you straight up. You’re overpaid. Sorry, I know it’s your life’s mission to make a lot of money but I just fired my primary physician. He’s a pill pusher. Most of The doctors in this country are way behind education. He was literally worthless. You got a long way to go and not a lot of time to do it, and now you have competition with artificial intelligence. You make too much money a doctor and you don’t have the necessary skill set.

Thank you. Full disclosure: I think you are referring to physicians, of which I am not. I have two doctorates (and no one cares!) but I am a Nurse Practitioner. Trust me, I do not make the big $!
