Would it be fun to watch a fog of war chess tournament?
Imagine the struggle of super GMs just by wondering the position of the pieces
One thing about super GMs, they have a phenomenal ability to figure out where everything is and keep track of it. Hikaru is having a very bad day.
@@victorfinberg8595 if you're referring to blindfolded then it's quite a bit different
This would be cool. Each players vision could be highlighted a different color so you could see what they can see/what they are blind to.
Fog Champs - the name is right there
@@ethan073
With the spaces where both players can see would have the regular lighting.
24:05 You cannot stalemate in fog of war, since there are no illegal moves (as long as the move is valid of course)
Could you stalemate if, somehow, your only remaining piece was your king and your opponent fully surrounded you?
@@JimCullen The King is allowed to walk into a check. So, no, you'd not be stalemated but you'd have to walk into a check and let your king to be captured and lose the game.
@@BongelaMnguni when I say surrounded, I mean _literally_ surrounded. As in all 8 squares adjacent to its current square are occupied by opposing pieces, and it’s your turn.
@@JimCullen Aha I see, Well the king will have to capture one of the 8 pieces surrounding it (since they are enemy pieces). Remember that walking into a check is allowed, so even if they are all protected the king is still allowed to capture any of them.
@@BongelaMnguni oh yeah. 🤦♂️it somehow didn't even occur to me that the king could just…take one of the pieces.
"someone's going to lose here, hopefully it's not me"...that's me when i can see the board.
Instead of Fog of War
Name it 800 rated players POV
Nobody:
Hikaru: “I know his exact position, more or less”
There is nothing more cursed than seeing king captures king
Nobody :
900s when they turn of stockfish for 2 moves : 0:05
Hahahhahwahhaah
does that imply that getting to 900 is so hard it requires sf?
@@yogetrekt8243 no some kids are too lazy to do it
It’s so much fun watching Hikaru being visibly confused, reminiscent of when he watched low lv players blunder
Just 2-3 more sessions and Hikaru is probably going to surpass my rating in fog of war even though I've been playing it for months :)
32:05
"I'm either going to win or lose" - Hikaru Nakamura
At 33:28, I don't think it was "mate on g7 next move." He takes on h5 with his rook, you deliver "mate," then he takes your king.
This might be the first time Hikaru's play resemble a 500
1:11 "I know EXACTLY where her pieces are (more or less)" sums up pretty well Hikaru playing Fog of War Chess 😆
Proceeds to forget he took all her peices
Now I feel like a god cuz I'm 1500 in standard chess but still have a Fog of War rating higher than Hikaru's
It's definitely a totally different game.
when will Hikaru learn that the only squares that are uncovered are the legal moves, so if a square diagonal to a pawn is fog then nothing is there
Watching the king actually get captured was quite amusing
When Fog of War first came out I got hooked on it and beat some GMs as a 1700 while they were still trying to figure out wtf was going on. Probably the only time I will EVER beat a GM over a chess board 😂
I beat a GM in fog of war being mid 1800
I dont play chess at all, but it seems I understand that pawns see one square ahead, if no fog means no one in front. If fog seen diagonally, means no one there. Its so frustrating to see him trying to take fog...
Yes, chess experience is one thing, but there are people who excel at logic, who never played chess. In other words, fog of war chess is closer to a non-chess strategy game than it is to chess.
@@victorfinberg8595 don't worry mate, I am not bully Hikaru. He is brilliant, but those moments make me smile, LOL
@@martynaslukas4340 He starts to play much better after the first few games, i.e. he just had a couple bad games. it happens to everyone.
40:12 the expression
26:08 this game was brilliant.
I’d love to see GMs start taking fog of war super seriously. Great variant.
So nice to see a checkmate and finally be able to see what happens after!
Hikaru doesn't realize that fog of war is about information.. bishops on open diagnals, rooks on open files etc. He seems to just be guessing where his opponent is always
you mean to say that hikaru doesnt understand the basics of chess??? lmao, rooks on open files and bishops on diagonals are a pretty consistent strat in regular chess
@@ymirtheymir2403 fan boi here
@@ymirtheymir2403 No im saying he doesn't understand the basics of fog of war, if you watched the video you'll see I'm right. You don't just place your pieces on unknown squares because you think his pieces are somewhere else. I'm around 2000 in fog of war and would spank hikaru lol, real chess is a different story
Give him a few months worth of games. He's likely to figure this out eventually. Then he'll probably end up breaking the game with his amazing visualization + general strategy game principles.
@@DoingYerMum guy’s acting like he’s a pro or somethin
Something i dont get, if you can capture diagonally with a pawn it lets you see the space you can capture right? (Actually tell me if thats right because thats the basis of this) so if you cant see the spaces diagonal of a pawn that just means its empty? Why not just show those spaces as blank?
to be slightly more annoying
So pawns see the space in front of them normally. As for diagonal they show nothing if empty and a visible blank space if capture-able but it won’t tell you what you are capturing if the pawn is the only thing that can see the space.
@@Tiberium600 That top comment makes more sense now.
😐Either way, Hikaru doesn't see flashing lights or hear buzzers and bells. He plays by sense of smell.
Yes, you can see exactly that at 4:00.
You see every square a piece of yours can move into. So if a pawn can capture, then it can move there and you can see the square. If there is a piece blocking a pawn, it can't see it because it cant move to the square. This is different compared to the other pieces as they can capture on every square they can move to. It is really quite a simple rule.
at the start of every game hikaru always asks where the pieces are at
"i literally can't see anything" thats the point 😅
That intro clip is pure pain.
This looks super fun. I may join for this variant alone.
Idk how the concept of this variation is confusing for him lol, I’ve never played it but I understand the “vision” of the pieces. While he’s lost in the sauce a good bit
Do you have decades worth of normal variations with the same piece placements for one side but not the other? Or the pattern recognition to know all the traps he could be blundering in any position? At the top level there is a lot more to think about.
Hikaru said "stale mate is definitely possible" Isn't that obviously untrue, because you are allowed to place your king in jeopardy in this mode?
It would be ridiculous if only kings wasn’t an auto stalemate
More fog of war chess, please
Bongcloud would be such an insane strategy as most players expect the king to castle
Insanely bad strategy, I think, failing instantly to lots of natural moves.
How to win at fog of war: gamble and pray.
i wanna see Hikaru play a bongcloud in fog of war
Isn’t it much more advantageous to trade in this variant? Because there’s always a chance it’s undefended and you also get a look at a few squares
Dude WTF. How did they manage to make it harder like that?!?!? That’s blowing my mind!
this I like, really fun idea
Alternate title: GM tries to stimulate playing as a 400
I’m rated 1900 on FoW and I can’t tell my opponent’s moves as accurate as Hikaru lol. Try playing passive and wait for the opponent to blunder next time hikaru
I started FoW a week ago and am around 1800. Honestly that’s my strategy too.. just keep the pieces on defended squares, overprotect them and gradually inch forward. 50-60% chances that opponent blunders first
This. I'm 1800 and you are so right.
I think this fog game is.. Training for blindfold
@33:27 when Naka premoved Qg7# Rxh5 was winning....Qg7 Rxh1 (King) lol
Jesus why does hikaru look like a skinless potato without the beard and mustache 😂😂😂😂
Do you hear that guys? He thinks he wins the prize
That rare phase when this was a gamba channel. Too much gambling
Does it seem like 3 three point pieces is worth more than 1 queen in fog of war chess?
oh come on
that ending
did you win the tourney or not
28:30 onwards is so impressive
NO YOU CAN'T GET A STALEMATE 0% POSSIBILITIES BY GAME DESIGN
I think it's possible, just really hard. It involves blocking your own king in with your pieces, and then blocking your pieces in with pawns that are spread out enough for your opponent to blockade. This may require promoting to a second bishop of one color so you can put your king in the corner, flanked by two bishops (and a rook on the diagonal) all locked in by 2 pawns.
@@charliesteiner2334 I don't think you can arrange such a position except by teleportation. eg. move the K to h1, a B to g1, that's fine. Move a pawn to h3 and a B to h2, that's fine. Meanwhile, your opponent is fully cooperating with you. Now move a rook to g2. Still fine. But how do you put a pawn on g3 after all this to block everything in?
@@victorfinberg8595 I think it could be possible in your opponent's side of the board, so pawns can move into place. It would be very hard to make happen, but seems technically possible
@@LtBlue14 Ah, yes, I didn't consider that, I agree with you.
Can you even stalemate in this?
How can you get a stalemate if youre legally allowed to move into check?
is it allowed if you can see that it's check? let's say your opponent has a king on b1 and a blocked pawn on a2 and on c2. you have a bishop on b2 and on c1 (got a second one by underpromotion...). than your opponent has no legal move because he can see that the bishops protect each other :-)
@@deinauge7894 I'm pretty sure there are no checks in this gamemode, period. Therefore stalemates and checkmates are not a thing either
@@lred1383 Correct. You can see exactly that at 4:55. King takes king.
@@victorfinberg8595 that doesn't show anything, because the king did not see the other king before it moved.
but if you are allowed to move into check even if you see that beforehand, there is still a possibility to stalemate: block your king in with pieces, which are blocked by each other and some pawns. if your opponent blocks your last pawn you have no move ;)
@@deinauge7894 Try setting up a stalemate position, even with full opponent cooperation, keeping in mind that pieces move in sequence. I think you will not be able to get the last piece (which must be a pawn) into position without teleportation.
Also, I'm pretty sure that you can knowingly put your king en prise in this ruleset. Check with the devs on that one, or the published rules.
What’s the music?

Did he just en passant?
Wow i can safely say i play better than hikaru in this
I'm 1800 at FoW chess. Hikaruuuuuuu I challenge you to beat me. I see the pitfalls in your understanding.
I just discovered this man and no doubt he is a likeable person.

chess 960 fog of war when?
Не. Сильно огромное приимущество у фигур которые видят далеко. Но есть и плюсы. Пешкам проще в ферзя, король может срубить короля.
how do i play this over the board?
If by that you mean playing it physically, I'd say you can't unless you have some of electronic Battleships setup with two boards and dividing wall
8:19 where is his pieces '-'
lmao, i have more elo in fog of war
I like this format. The rules need adjustment though.
What would be your suggestions? Just out of curiosity
Why not take king at 50:25?
Cause the opponent moved their king away
I don't know if you noticed but at 47 minutes in you played cpq namitbir twice in a row? maybe more than that, depends how they do naming. 3 times in a row, you can see their rating keep going down, unless it's a computer? They aren't masking the names are they? okay 4 times in a row, where the ELO keeps dropping, it can't be the same person right? unless it's a machine, i don't know how it works. Unless this means he and the 2nd place guy keep fighting and he's going to win this. I don't know maybe there are obscured names or just a machine, maybe i'll dig through the comments. 52 minutes in for the 5th time, he recognizes it, so it is the same guy, so it is real, oh okay. weird weird. Again unless you two are fighting for top spot assuming it's like only an hour long tournament. The rematch that happened on time #6 when he had gotten himself back up to your level 1655/1659.

Hikaru should watch the youtube "Fog of War - MasterClass" videos. He could learn from top fog of war players instead of trying to figure it all out from scratch by himself.
Is there a solidified meta for Fog of War gameplay?
@@RhodokTribesman why wouldn't there be any?

40:03 to 40:20
i wanna see fog of war but the piece placement is completely randomised
Based on what Hikaru sees at 5:35, if he hasn't figured it out earlier, he should realize that he almost certainly just hung his queen, i.e. before W actually makes the move. No, he didn't gamble; it was purely a mistake.
Hikaru only plays weakly in the first few games. He's back to his old self after that. Especially, his very last comment: "I Bobby Fischered myself, but he didn't do it."
Hikaru is so bad at fog of war...wow
Probably affects higher rated players more, since they tend to rely on being able to see the entire board and being able to think 4-5 moves ahead at all times.
He should really get some coaching from one of the world champions...
@@wonderwhatsnext5408 I've played a few GMs on FOW. They seem to understand the tactics better than Hikaru. He should study it a little. Its a really indepth variant that takes a lot of skill and forward thinking...
@@alitte2hi How is he bad at it? He was playing against GM's as well...
@@wonderwhatsnext5408 No, it is specifically the strongest players who don't need to see the board at all. That's why it's so surprising that Hikaru is playing so badly today.
