    Wow, as a Taiwanese I have to say your pronunciation of xiangqi is excellent. 象棋(xiangqi) is a really common game in Taiwan. Board games are more familiar to younger generations, but almost everyone knows how to play xiangqi. Its not hard to find elders hanging out playing xiangqi in parks as their hobbies, and some of them play ed really well. Also there are many phrases created from particular moves or strategies in xiangqi, like 馬後炮(check with a cannon behind a knight), 雙炮將(check with double cannons), 將軍抽車(check and force your opponent to sacrifice his rook for his general), 王見王(governor and general face each other directly), 當頭炮(move one of your cannon side way behind the middle pawn as the first move in a game) and etc.

      +janeric11yt Thank you so much! It's not easy for a westerner to get a good response on pronunciation of a Chinese word! I am fascinated by the Chinese language and I wish I could really speak it. For the time being, I have to settle for playing Chinese chess -- but that's very enjoyable all the same. Please feel invited to share your knowledge in the comments of any of my videos.

    Very nicely explained!
    However, you missed one rule in this video. No offense, just a comment here :).
    Elephants move two diagonals, but when any piece occupied the exact mid-point of the two-diagonal route, the elephants are not allowed to move in that way.
    For instance, if part of the board looks like this:
    ┌ ┬ A
    ├ 兵 ┤
    象 ┴ ┘
    (As a reminder to other readers: 象 = black elephant, 兵 = red pawn)
    then the elephant on the left-bottom corner are *not* allowed to move to position A.

      Thanks for the good comment. Yes -- very important! both the knights and the elephants can be blocked by an intervening piece. This is significantly different from the moves of elephants and horses that come from the Indian/Persian/Arabic tradition (which freely leap over intervening pieces). Much detail can be found in our book ( aworldofchess.com )

      @@jcn268 Thanks for that good point. I sometimes translate chess-to-chess instead of language-to-language ... but it is always best to know the meanings of the pieces as they actually are. (Our book is much more careful in this sort of detail aworldofchess.com )

      @Gary Lau Yeah it's actually civil official.
      However, due to the fact that ancient Chinese don't like repeating things, they would tend to put synonyms to the opposite position. 帥 and 將 for example, both denoted as the king of red and black, but they are actually marshal and general of the military system.
      If synonyms can't be found, they would alter the characters slightly or use the homonyms. 炮 and 包 for example, are both canons of red and black. If you insist to translate them, however, the former one is canon, but the later one is "bun" (yeah that delicious ones). 相 and 象 are examples of homonyms, and thus are more be called "elephants" when translated.

    One mistake in my demo -- at 4:57 I was demonstrating stalemate (which is a win in this game). However, I had the black "king" in the wrong position. It should be over on the left side of the fortress, preventing the red "king" from any possible move.

    The boards I have now are the same size and material, but the lines are a little thinner, not as pronounced. The pieces I have now are the same size and material -- but they have the more 'modern' style of script. Not the 'simplified' characters, but a sort of cursive brush-stroke look. They seem to be making all the sets that way lately. Anyway, you can check them out by going to buychinesechess.com (another one of my web sites)...

    "flying general" in chinese is "飛公" / "飛將軍". it is actually referring to the rule that the two generals cannot face each other on the same vertical line, not without any other pieces between them. otherwise one can "fly" over to capture the other.

    When the Cannon captures, it has to jump over one piece, and then capture the piece it lands on. It does not matter what sort of piece it jumps over, friend or foe. For instance, in his first move, a cannon may capture the horse on the other side (though this is not usually recommended).

    Thank you for the helpful video. I have recently been getting into Chess again; and I really like hearing about the different kinds of Chess across the world, Xiangqi probably interests me the most.
    I have been thinking of getting my own Xiangqi set; since I see a lot of them for really cheap (sometimes as low as $5.) But there is still one question I have.
    If an enemy piece were to step foot in one of the "General's squares" can the General capture that enemy piece; like the king can capture other pieces in European Chess, or can the General only move, and not attack?

    Thanks for the question. No, the elephant only moves exactly 2 points diagonally, so the space in front of the adviser is only one point from the elephant's starting position. In fact, the elephant can only land on 7 points of the entire board (2 points diagonally, never crossing the river).

      Thanks Jimmy, this is a very interesting issue, regarding the 'elephant'. The symbol itself has had many meanings over time; to make matters more interesting, it is a different character across the board. It is almost always called 'elephant' in modern translation, but the meanings over time suggest much different possibilities

      It looks like the original game of chess, Chaturanga, had a piece called the Elephant, which moved in a similar fashion but could leap over other pieces. The Minister cannot leap and is constrained to its own territory. It might make more sense to call this piece a Minister, if not just to prevent confusion with the Elephant which moves differently... The World Xiangqi Federation, however, calls the piece an Elephant. :/

    With the similarities in rules and pieces, did Chinese chess influence the development of European chess? Also, I remember someone once told me that your infantry (foot soldier) has to cross the river first, because it is the infantry that "builds" a bridge (imaginary), then other pieces that are allowed to cross the river can then move across the river.

    • @rickknowlton9990
      @rickknowlton9990 4 роки тому

      Thanks for your message. It is not entirely clear, from the historic record, how Chinese chess and the ancient Persian/Indian games first influenced each other. But the influence is unmistakable. The European game that we play in the US is derived from the Persian/Indian/Arabic game -- so they are all closely related. That is interesting about the pawn, gaining power because it has created a bridge. It makes sense. Send your further thoughts any time.

    I just played this game 10 times against an AI and I found it a decent game.
    The problem for me is the slow endgame caused by the elimination of pieces and the defense-only pieces (almost a third
    of the pieces can't even get to the opponent's side of the board).
    I think a chess game really needs strong pieces like the western chess or the dropping rule like shogi to make the endgame exciting.

In fact, our word 'rook' does not mean anything, except 'that chess piece' ♖ ... so there is no real-life figure indicated by the word. Yes, alas, perpetual check is one of the many annoying ways to force a draw in 'international' (western) chess. What's worse is stalemate! 有人说象棋的每个棋子都是汉字不方便外国人记忆。可以对每个棋子上的字进行翻译,比如,“将”翻译为 General,“士”翻译为Counselor,“象”翻译为 bodyguard,“马”翻译为cavalry,“车”翻译为Chariot,“兵,卒”翻译为infantry ,“炮”翻译为artillery. 也许这样翻译更容易外国人学习和记忆吧

      Thanks very much , Vic! I have translated your words from Chinese with help of Google:
      Some people say that each chess piece being a Chinese character is not convenient for foreigners to remember. The words on each piece can be translated, for example, "将" translates to General, "士" translates to Guard, "象" translates to Elephant cavalry, "马" translates to cavalry, and "车" translates to Chariot, "兵,卒" translates to infantry, "炮" translates to artillery. Maybe this translation is easier for foreigners to learn and remember.

    when the opponents pawn move out of the way, and two generals meet, it is your turn, you could just fly your general and checkmate the opponents general.

    • @gregoryreese8491
      @gregoryreese8491 6 років тому

      I'm completely new to the game and am far from having a good grasp of the basics; however, as I understand it, the first move as you describe it, ie "when the opponent[']s pawn move[s] out of the way, and two generals meet"...the situation would simply not be allowed to arise because it could only be created by an illegal move.
      The first move you describe (the pawn move) would not be allowed because of (4:26):"Generals are not allowed to face each one another one the same line without there being an intervening piece."

    • @AncientChess
      @AncientChess  8 років тому

      +ohiohamguy Thanks for the message. The pieces are solid acrylic, very nice and durable. I get sets like this still and sell them on my web site, but the company has changed the calligraphy to be more 'modern' ... not the simplified characters but a sort of 'cursive' style. I guess it's what's happening in Chinese chess sets, but it is unfortunate for westerners like me, because the 'cursive' style is a little harder for the non-Chinese eye to interpret. I think you'll see what I mean if you check the xiangqi in my listings. Still very good sets, but a different appearance.

      Thanks for your message. I am sorry if this is not clear --
      I think most viewers understand this. The second piece I show is the horse, at 1:10. I moves one space orthogonally (along the square lines) plus one diagonally, making what we consider a 'knight's move'. perhaps you mean the third piece I show, the elephant (or minister). It moves, as you said, 2 spaces diagonally, no more or less. That is at 1:55

    P.S. Great video!

    • @rickknowlton9990
      @rickknowlton9990 4 роки тому

      Wow, that's a really big question, worth a much bigger answer than I can give right here. But I hope you check some strategy videos to show some of the basic ideas. From my perspective, I would say the Chinese game is very open. You can begin threatening and invading the opponent's side very quickly, as many angles of attack are open from the beginning. It continues like that -- seems like the lines of attack keep appearing out of nowhere. Very exciting!
      The Japanese game starts more slowly, with strategic considerations guiding the first few moves. But once pieces start to be exchanged and promoted, the possibilities explode, making the game very complex. Since the pieces keep coming back into play, the complexity never ends, and it becomes a race, who can checkmate the opponent most quickly (and win).
      I hope you do play these games, and search more -- there are many great youtube videos about the games... and even videos in other languages teach a lot, showing the positions and considerations on the board.

    Quick Question, does the knight still move in L shape in Chinese Chess just the same way it moves in Westernized Chess?

    • @rickknowlton9990
      @rickknowlton9990 6 років тому

      Yes, BUT it can be blocked on the first point it crosses, not on the second point. For that reason, the knight in xiangqi is considered to move one point orthogonally (forward, backward, left, right) plus one point diagonally (still moving away from its point of departure). In this way, there is one intervening point that can block a knight's move. See?

    • @AncientChess
      @AncientChess  9 років тому

      I am sorry, I do not exactly understand the first question (even with 3 question marks). The answer to the second question is that no player is allowed to create a perpetual check, not red and not black either. Whoever is giving check has to come up with a different move.

    • @Nicoder6884
      @Nicoder6884 7 років тому

      +AncientChess The first question asks if making an illegal move counts as a loss.

    • @AncientChess
      @AncientChess  7 років тому

      I don't find that loss-by-illegal-move idea in the official rules. The only thing I see is that if a player makes the same illegal move 3 times, though he has been warned by the arbiter, he loses -- but that's a case of deliberately ignoring the arbiter. There are many details in rules of what constitutes a perpetual attack, but that's another story. The easiest rendering of the official rules of xiangqi (for tournaments), I find at this link:
